A-4 Skyhawk, Part "THREE"
(US.MARINES TA-4F/J and OA-4M)

I did not have much opportunities to photograph USMC's two-seat Skyhawks. Most common target for Japanese photographers was TA/OA-4 of H&MS-12(tail code "WA") stationed at MCAS Iwakuni. They sometimes participated in static display of airshows held in Japan. Other than that, TA-4F of H&MS-11("TM") and H&MS-13 ("YU") were sometimes seen at US airfields in Japan later in the 1960's and at the beginning of the 1970's. So, my album on this category is fairly limitted, unfortunately.
日本の写真マニアにとって、USMCの複座スカイホークを写す機会、と言うか、所属部隊のバリエーションはかなり限られていたと 思います。勿論小生のアルバムも大半はH&MS-12（WA)のTA-4FとOA-4Mばかりです。でも逆に言えば欧米のマニアにとっては 馴染みの薄い珍しいアイテムなので、何枚も貼らせていただきます。その他の数少ない写真は米国で写しました。

H&MS-12 (Outlaws)

The above picture shows TA-4F of H&MS-12, which was displayed on the static area of Iwakuni Airshow back in 1973. The rudder is divided into red and gold segments. RF-4B of VMCJ-1(RM) was displayed next to this TA-4F.
上の写真は73年の岩国のオープンで展示されていたTA-4Fです。この時は確か少し早く展示エリアに立ち入り出来る アレンジが有って、それに参加させていただきました。前脚に立て掛けられた看板がちょっと邪魔でした。

The above two photos were taken at MCAS.Iwakuni in 1976. These "WA-05" and "WA-06" were parked on the ramp side by side. The unit markings at that time(NOV76) were basically the same as the 1973 markings as shown on the top photo of this page. The only differences are.....(1) the rudder is painted in solid red (no gold segments), and (2) the unit designation H&MS-12 is stencilled in black on the fuselage. By closely comparing the above two photos, you can find some differences in antenna configuration on the tail/fin section between WA-05 and WA-06.
上の２枚は岩国のフライトラインで隣同士に駐機していたTA-4J、WA-05とWA-06です。一番上に掲載した73年の写真と比較すると ラダーが赤一色に変わっています。又、上の２枚（WA-05とWA-06）を比較しても尾部のアンテナ類配置がかなり違っています。 WA-05ではテイルパイプ下や垂直尾翼後端（水平尾翼の高さ）に『尖がり帽子』が追加され、テイルパイプ側面上側にも『コブ』 が追加されています。逆にWA-06には垂直尾翼上端に短い棒状のアンテナが突き出しています。プラモマニアには見逃せない ポイントですね。

Three years after I took the previous pair of TA-4F photos above, I returned to MCAS Iwakuni again in 1979. A pair of TA-4F (WA-171 & WA-176) were parked on the ramp side by side. There were some changes(differences) in markings in three years between 1976 and 1979. The differences are.....(1) Red shadow is added on black tail code "WA", (2) Nose number has been changed from two-digit number to three-digit starting from 171, (3) New rudder markings in 1979 are painted in red/white/blue with nine white stars. Please note rectangular red marking under the cockpit of "WA-171". "SGT.CONNINGHAM P/C BIMBO" were lettered in yellow within the red rectangle. Please note also differences (again) in antenna configuration between WA-171 & WA-176. WA-176 is equipped with several ECM antennas/fairings near the tail pipe. Also WA-176 is equipped with a large black blade antenna on top of the fuselage. VMA-211 flight line with A-4Ms is seen in the background.
上の2枚は岩国の列線で隣同士に駐機していたWA-171とWA-176で、1979年の撮影です。その上に掲載した76年の２枚の 写真と比較すると、いくつかのマーキング上の変化が見られます。具体的には...(１）コードWAに赤い影が追加された、（２） modexが2桁から3桁に変更、（３）ラダーの色が赤白青になり星が追加されました。またWA-171とWA-176を比較すると、 これまたアンテナ配置が異なっており、WA-176では尾部に『尖がり帽子』が2本と、テールパイプ上面にECMフェアリングが追加されて います。更には胴体上部には大きなブレードアンテナが装備されています。WA-171の操縦席下の長方形マークに書かれている文字 は"SGT.CONNINGHAM P/C BIMBO"です。 両写真の背景にはVMA-211のA-4Mの列線が見えます。因みに、WA-171はこの ページの一番上に掲載したWA-03（1973年撮影）と同一機です。

During FEB/MAR period of 1981, H&MS-12 was re-equipped with OA-4M in low-visibility paint scheme. These four photos show OA-4Ms displayed on static area during airshows at Yokota(upper two photos) and Komatsu(lower two photos). The top photo of "WA-1" was taken in 1981 within half a year of new introduction of OA-4M, "WA-1" carried three "white" tanks under the wing and fuselage. The remainning photos show grey tanks under the wing and fuselage. The tail marking of "Gun man with two pistols" is seen in the lower three photos.
H&MS-12は1981年春にOA-4Mへ機種変更しました。一番上 の写真は機種変更したばかりの81年夏の横田公開で写した OA-4Mですが、まだ増槽はロービジ前の白いタンクが3本ぶら 下がっています。一番下の写真では胴体下のタンクだけがえらく 濃いグレーになっています。プラモに変化を付けるには、この 様な塗り分けも良いかなと思います。

H&MS-15

The above photo shows TA-4F of H&MS-15 parked at NAS.Atsugi in 1971. The unit was stationed at MCAS Iwakuni at the time I took this photo. TA-4Fs of H&MS-15 used to be regular visitors at Yokota and Atsugi at the beginning of the 1970's, so I did photograph some other TA-4Fs of H&MS-15. Unfortunately, I was not able to find such old negatives at this point. The fuselage band is painted in blue with white stars. The rudder is also white and blue.
厚木の公開日に撮影したTA-4Fですから、全く同じ写真を写したマニアの方も沢山おられるはずです。胴体の帯やラダーの色は青と白 でした。H&MS-15の機体は他の機会にも何度か撮影出来たのですが、当時のネガが散逸してしまい見つかりません。今回は諦めます。

H&MS-24

The above photos were taken at MCAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii in 1977. As you can see from the above photos, it carried a fuel tank under the fuselage which still retained red/white/blue Bicentennial markings. Also diving hawk is applied on both sides of the forward fuselage immediately under the canopy.
カネオヘベイで1977年に撮影したH&MS-24のTA-4Fです。76年のバイセンからまだ日が浅いため、胴体下の増槽タンクにはまだバイセン のマーキングが残されています。またキャノピー下には襲いかかるホークのマーキングが描かれていて、小生を喜ばせてくれました。 激しい雨の直後の撮影なので、ﾗﾝﾌﾟには水たまりが有り、ｷｬﾉﾋﾟｰには水滴が沢山残っています。でも直ぐに晴れてくれて本当に良かった！

VMA-133 (Dragons)

The above TA-4J of VMA-133 "ME-14" was taxing back to the ramp after landing at Alameda in 1975. It carried a round badge of USMC on the fuselage aft of jet intake, and letters "MARTD" stencilled immediately above the USMC badge and letters "ALAMEDA" stencilled below the badge.
アラメダに着陸後タキシングしてランプに戻るVMA-133のTA-4Jです。この写真は何と標準レンズで写しているので、誘導路の直ぐ前 まで近付けたんです。最も誘導路と言っても、だだっ広い舗装面にセンターラインを引いただけで、舗装面の割れ目からは雑草が生え ています。胴体中央側面の円形マークはUSMCのバッチです。その上には"MARTD"、下には"ALAMEDA"の表記があります。 VMA-133では1975から1980年頃にかけてTA-4Jを運用していました。

VMAT-102 (Skyhawks)

This "SC-28" is definitely one of the most beautiful skyhawks within the USN/USMC squadrons. I photographed this TA-4J on the transient line at NAS.Miramar. Fortunately enough, my Kodachrome 25 slides of this a/c have retained its original colors for "37" years and I scanned the images in 2012. I'm quite happy to be able to show you my old 1975 color photos in such realistic and fresh colors.
これら２枚は同じ機体ですがミラマーの外来機の列線で75年 に写しました。当時のVMAT-102の主力機はA-4Mでしたが、少数 のTA-4J/Fも運用していました。複座機は上面ガルグレーの機体と 全面真っ白の機体が有りましたが、でっかい赤のホークのマーキングは 白い機体が絶対似合います。USN/USMCのスカイホークの中で、この 機体のマーキングは最も美しいものの一つだと思います。70年代前半 からKodachrome25(KM)をずっと使ってきましたが、やっぱりKM は素晴らしいフィルムだと痛感しました。それはこの機体を写した 37年後の2012年にこの画像をデジタル化しましたが、取り出した このスライドはほとんど退色が認められず、37年前の色をそのまま残している様に思われました。よってパソコンの画面でこの画像を 見ても、カリフォルニアの青空の元で本機を写した37年前の興奮と緊張が今でも伝わって来ます。
