When I visited Luke AFB in November 1993, a total of three AV-8Bs from VMA-214 "Black Sheep" landed and taxied into the
transient ramp at Luke field.
Notice the gray touch-up mark on the tail of "WE-19"(shown immediately above), which represented its previous tail code of "WF".
Please note also....(1) the "Blacksheep" marking on the tail, and (2) the squadron nickname "Blacksheep" appeared on the rear fuselage side immediately below "VMA-214".

1993年11月にLuke AFBを訪問し外来機ランプに歩いて来た時、ちょうどVMA-214 "Black Sheep"のAV-8B三機が着陸し、
外来機ランプにタキシングしてきました。これらの写真はその時に撮影したものです。
中段写真の"WE-19"の尾翼を見ると、以前使っていたテールコードの"WF"がグレー塗料で塗り潰された跡が確認できます。
飛行隊のニックネームである"Black Sheep"の文字が後部胴体側面（"VMA-214"の下）に描かれています。
尾翼に描かれた"Black Sheep"の絵柄は同隊のA-4Mに描かれていたものと輪郭はほぼ同じです。

These photos show AV-8Bs of VMA-223 "Bulldogs" which I photographed at Smyrna(TN) airshow in September 1996.
Smyrna airport is located appox. 19 miles (30km) south-east of Nashville and it used to be a USAF's transport base(C-130, etc.) named Sewart AFB until 1971.
I used to live near Smyrna only five miles from the airport from 1996 until 2011, and the airport is now general aviation airport.
Please note....(1) the sunburst-style markings on the rudder, and (2) squadron nickname "Bulldogs" appeared on the rear fuselage just below "VMA-223".

1996年9月にSmyrna（スマーナと発音）空港のエアショーで撮影したVMA-223 "Bulldogs"のAV-8Bです。
スマーナ空港はカントリーミュージックで有名なナッシュビルの郊外（南東30km）にありますが、非常に大きな空港で1971年まではUSAFの輸送基地（Sewart AFB）でした。
現在はジェネアビ専用空港ですが、近在の日産自動車組立工場は部品の緊急調達のため時たま使っています。
小生はこの空港から車で１５分のアパートに1996年から2011年まで住んでおりました。
エアショーの前日には事務所の窓から、予行練習しているサンダーバーズなどが良く見えました。
さて、VMA-223のAV-8Bですが、この当時は小写真に示すような『色付き！』の飛行隊インシグニアを機首に付けていました。
遂に『色』が戻ってきたナ！と喜んだものです。

Top photo shows an AV-8A of VMA-231 "Ace of Spades", which was displayed at Yokota airshow held in July 1979.
Modex (nose #) of this aircraft was NOT clear, either "#12" or "#02"??
Bottom photo shows an AV-8B (Radar Harrier) of VMA-231 "Ace of Spades", which was displayed at Dayton airshow held in July 1997.
The squadron upgraded from the AV-8A to the AV-8B in 1985.
Please note the baggage pod under the left wing with the markings of "Ace of Spades" and "VMA-231" in darker gray.
Both of these aircraft carried the "Ace of Spades" insignia on the nose.

上段写真は1979年の横田公開日に地上展示されたVMA-231 "Ace of Spades"のAV-8Aです。
この機体の機首モデックスは不規則（？）な形で『12』なのか『02』なのか、それとも『2』なのか？小生にはわかりません。
恐らく旧モデックスを緑部分だけタッチアップで消した後、新モデックスの『2』を書き込んだのではと思います。
下段写真は1997年のデイトン・エアショーで地上展示されたVMA-231のAV-8Bレーダーハリアーです。
同隊は1985年にAV-8AからAV-8Bに機種改編しました。
左翼下に付いているバゲッジポッドには、部隊のシンボルであるスペードと"VMA-231"の文字が濃いグレーで描かれています。
いずれの機体にも機首には"Ace of Spades"のインシグニアが描かれています。

These photos show a AV-8B of VMA-311 "Tomcats" which I photographed at NAS.El Centro in March 1990.
The aircraft carried the "Tomcats" marking on the tail as shown on the photo at left.
The similar "Tomcats" marking was seen on their A-4M Skyhawk before they switched to the AV-8B in 1986.

同隊は1986年にA-4MからAV-8Bに機種改編しましたが、同隊のA-4Mは当時日本の航空祭等でお馴染みでしたね。
本機の尾翼に描かれた"Tomcats"のマーキングは、同隊のA-4Mにも同様のデザインで描かれていました。

Above photos show AV-8As of VMA-513 "Flying Nightmares" in early paint scheme with high-visibility markings.
All these photos were taken in 1976 at MCAS.Iwakuni (top three photos) and at Misawa (bottom photo).
Please note the "WF-01" and the "WF-9" (top two photos) carried the refueling probes and the 300 Gal. ferry tanks under the wing,
while the "WF-15" and the "WG-5" (bottom two photos) carried the smaller 100 Gal. tanks without the refueling probes.

上から3枚は1976年11月に岩国で撮影したVMA-513 "Flying Nightmares"のAV-8Aです。
最下段の写真のみは1976年の三沢航空祭で展示された同隊のAV-8Aです。
いずれもまだハイビジ時代のマーキングで国籍マークもフルカラーでした。
上から2枚の"WF-01"と"WF-9"は空中給油プローブを付けて、増槽タンクもフェリー用大型（300 Gal.?）タンクを付けています。
下から2枚の"WF-15"と"WF-5"は、小さめの100 Gal.タンクを付け、給油プローブは取り外されています。

Above photos show "Double Nuts" AV-8Bs for VMA-513 "Flying Nightmares".
Top photo was taken at NAS.Point Mugu in October 1990, and the bottom photo was taken at NAS.Atsugi in May 1996.
Bureau Numbers of these aircraft were almost illegible because the Bu.No. stencils were painted in almost the same color as its base color on the fin.
Please note the interesting tail markings of the gray AV-8B depicted on the bottom photo.

いずれもVMA-513 "Flying Nightmares"のその当時のダブルナッツ機です。
上段の写真は加州NAS.Point Muguで1990年10月に撮影しました。
マーキング類は全て濃いグレー（一部黒？）になっており、部隊マークも無く、全く面白くないダブルナッツ機です。
BuNoは濃いグレーで尾翼に書き込まれていますが、地色との明度差がほとんど無く、写真からは正確に判読できません。
下段の写真は1996年の厚木公開日の展示機です。尾翼のマーキングはロービジながらなかなか面白いですね。
この機体も尾翼に書かれたBuNoがほとんど判読できません。

Above photos show AV-8As of VMA-542 "Flying Tigers" which I photographed at various airshows in Japan during 1978-1981.
The "Flying Tigers" used to deploy to MCAS.Iwakuni quite frequently with the AV-8As, so I had multiple chances to photograph their AV-8As at various airshows in Japan.
The squadron insignia (Flying Tigers) appeared on the nose of the "WH-03" as shown on the photo at left.
Please note the triangular red/white stencils of "Ejection Seat" seen on the nose of the "WH-26" shown on the top photo.

いずれも日本各地の公開日で1978年から1981年当時に撮影したVMA-542 "Flying Tigers"のAV-8Aです。
既にマーキング類の低視認性化が始まっており、いずれの写真でも国籍マークが黒（濃いグレー？）に変わっています。
但し、1978年の築城航空祭で撮影した"WH-26"（最上段の写真）では、射出座席注意の三角マークがまだ色付き（赤白）で描かれています。
1980年の厚木公開日に展示された"WH-03"（3枚目の写真）では、機首に"Flying Tigers"の飛行隊インシグニアが『色付き』で描かれていました（小写真）。

Top photo was taken at Kanoya airshow and you can find a couple of Kanoya-based P-3Cs in the background.
Squadron insignia (yellow/black tiger) appeared on the nose, together with yellow tail markings on the rudder.

いずれも1995年に撮影したVMA-542のAV-8Bですが、最上段の写真は鹿屋の航空祭に地上展示されていた機体です。
背景には鹿屋基地のP-3Cが写り込んでいます。中段と下段の写真は横田の公開日に撮りました。
いずれもマーキングに少し『色』が復活しており、機首にはタイガーの飛行隊インシグニア、そしてラダーには黄色のテールマーキングが描かれていました。
