Kawasaki C-1


The first prototype of the C-1 (XC-1) made its first flight on 12NOV70 and was delivered to the JASDF Air Proving Wing on 24FEB71. JASDF received a total of 31 C-1s during 1971-1981 as C-46 replacements with the Air Transport Wing, equipping 401st, 402nd and 403rd Squadrons. Initially flown unpainted, they adopted a green/brown/tan camouflage with light grey undersides in late 1978. Most of the C-1s are currently operated by 402nd (at Iruma) and 403rd (at Miho) Squadrons of the Air Transport Wing. The last three digits of the serial numbers are 001-031.

日本のマニアの皆様にとっては良くご存知のC-1ですので、日本語での解説文は割愛させていただきます。上の写真は1978年の入間航空祭で撮影した空挺団の落下展示です。

401st Squadron 第401飛行隊

The 401st Sqdn was originally a C-46 squadron formed 01OCT58 at Miho under newly formed Air Transport Wing. The squadron was re-organized on 31MAR78 at Komaki under newly formed 1st Tactical Airlift Group with C-1 and YS-11. All C-1s and YS-11s of the 401st were transferred to the 402nd/403rd Squadron by 1989 and the unit then became a pure C-130 squadron. The 401st is currently in active service with C/KC-130H at Komaki. Tail-marking of the 401st Sqdn.(actually 1st TAG) was a red "Shachihoki", or a killer whale, of the Nagoya Castle on the blue background of a figure "1", which represented the "1"st Tactical Airlift Group commanding the 401st Squadron. This tail-marking as shown on a photo at left is no longer used on their C/KC-130H.

(above photo) The 401st received some C-1s at Komaki before the 1st Tactical Airlift Group was officially organized at Komaki on 31MAR78. The above photo shows a couple of C-1s in natural metal with no tail markings, which was photographed at Komaki in August 1977.

(above two photos) The top photo shows a C-1 #003 taxing at Misawa AB on 08OCT78. This a/c arrived at Misawa to participate in the static display at Misawa airshow. The bottom photo was taken on the flight line at Komaki, the home of the 401st, in August 1980. Both C-1s were finished in natural metal at that time.

402nd Squadron 第402飛行隊

The 402nd Sqdn was originally formed at Kisarazu with C-46 on 01OCT58 under newly formed Air Transport Wing. Recieved the first YS-11 in 1965. Moved to Iruma on 01JUN68. The 402nd began receiving Kawasaki C-1 in 1973. The natural metal C-1s had been solely operated by the 402nd till March 1978. The unit was re-organized on 31MAR78 as part of the newly formed 2nd Tactical Airlift Group at Iruma with C-1 and YS-11.
C-1s of the 402nd Sqdn. did not carry any tail markings at all until the early 1978. They started using a bird marking in 1978, which stylized "2" meaning the "2"nd Tactical Airlift Group commanding the 402nd Sqdn. In 1988, they adopted their new tail marking as shown on the photo at left. This new marking is an emblem of the 2nd Tactical Airlift Group.

The 402nd Sqdn. received their first C-1 at Iruma in December 1973, and the 402nd had been the only transport squadron operating the C-1 during 1973-1976. All the C-1s based at Iruma did not carry any tail markings during that period. The top photo shows a C-1 #004 on final at Iruma in October 1976. I took the bottom photo (C-1 #004) on the flight line at Iruma in August 1976.

All the C-1s operated by the Air Transport Wing were gradually camouflaged from late 1978 and all of the C-1s had been painted in camouflage scheme by the early 1980's. The top three photos above were taken at Iruma during 1980-1984. The bottom photo shows a C-1 #029 displayed at Misawa airshow in September 1987.

403rd Squadron 第403飛行隊

The 403rd Squadron was formed at Miho on 31MAR78 as part of the 3rd Tactical Airlift Group, which was also newly organized at the same time, with C-1 and YS-11. The 403rd undertakes the crew-training for the Air Transport Wing.

Top photo shows a C-1 #019 in natural metal parked at Iruma in February 1979. The bottom photo shows a C-1 #006 in camouflage scheme displayed at Miho airshow in May 1988. The tail marking of the 403rd at that time was a blue cherry flower whose various petals are formed into the highly stylized letters "ATW" meaning Air Transport Wing. The number "3" in white in the middle of the marking represents the "3"rd Tactical Airlift Group.

(above photo) They changed the tail marking in the early 1990's (?) and their new marking was a "white rabbit of Inaba" appeared in the Japanese myth. The above photo shows a C-1 #011 with the new rabbit marking photographed at Hyakuri airshow held in November 1995.

Air Proving Wing (APW) 航空実験団

Air Proving Wing received the first prototype of C-1 (XC-1) in February 1971. Since then the APW continued operating a single C-1 for operational testing purposes. The APW's C-1 has remained unpainted even after all other C-1s operated by the Air Trasnport Wing had changed to camouflage scheme at the end of the 1970's.

All the above three photos show a C-1 (ex-XC-1) #001 operated by the Air Proving Wing. The #001 shown on the top photo was displayed on the static line at Misawa airshow held in October 1976. Middle photo was taken at Iruma in November 1976. Please note that a couple of F-86Fs are seen in the background. The #001 with a long red/white probe on its nose shown on the bottom photo was displayed on the static line at Nyutabaru airshow in December 1979. Please note a flight line of the F-104s (202nd Sqdn) in the background.
