I took these photos at Komatsu, the home of the 205th Sqdn, in August 1977. The weather was not so good as shown on the photos, and for some reasons, I was not permitted to step into the flight line to take photos of each and every aircraft operated by the 205th. The tail marking of the 205th is a stylized figure "6" which has been turned to the right by 90 degrees. (I mean, the tail marking painted on the PORT side looked that way.) The 205th began using this marking in NOV67, but they changed their tail marking to the new one (shown in the photos below) in April/May 1978.

The 205th Sqdn had used the above-shown new tail marking only for three years between May 1978 and June 1981. This was the 6th Wing marking and the orange portion of this marking stylizes the following three things.
(1) This stylizes "6" means the "6"th Air Wing.
(2) This stylizes the shape of Ishikawa Prefecture where Komatsu AB, the home of the 6th Air Wing, is located.
(3) This stylizes also a Kanji/Chinese-character of "ISHI" of ISHI-kawa Prefecture.
The same tail marking was applied on F-4EJs of the 303rd Sqdn, 6th Air Wing at the same time. The earlier tail marking of the 205th Sqdn./6th Wing shown on the top of this page remained to be carried on the fuselage side, just after the jet intake, after the new marking was adopted as shown on above photos. The top photo shows the F-104J #683 taxing at Komatsu soon after landing. Please note that it carried a A/A37U-15 tow target pod for towing a dart target under the left wing. The bottom photo shows the F-104J #683 which carried RL-4 rocket launchers under the wing.

206th Squadron

The 206th Squadron was formed on 20DEC65 at Hyakuri (closest fighter base from Tokyo), within 7th Air Wing, with F-104J as fighter interceptor squadron. Disbanded on 01DEC78 at Hyakuri.

The photo at left shows a tail-marking of the 7th Air Wing used between 1966 and 1978. The blue portion of the marking (port side marking) is a stylized "7" meaning the "7"th Air Wing. The 7th Wing was (still is) based at Hyakuri which is located near the city of "Mito", and there is a famous Japanese-style plum garden called "Kairaku-en". So, the Kairaku-en's plum flower can be seen imposed on the foreground of the figure "7".

I visited Hyakuri in December 1973 (it was my second visit to Hyakuri) and the above photos were taken at that occasion. Please note that the F-104J #629 (bottom photo) carried "Orange" wing-tip tanks. Also #629 was equipped with a LAU-3A Rocket Launcher under the left wing.

These taxing shots were taken from the outside of the fences at Hyakuri AB. There was a very good shooting spot near the end of the Runway 03, and you were able to take good taxing shots (as shown above) from the outside of the fences with your 135-200mm tele-photo lenses. The top photo shows a pair of F-104Js taxing to the R/W #03 for another training mission. The photo immediate above shows another pair of F-104Js taxing back to the ramp soon after landing.

(above photo) This photo was also taken at the same shooting spot near the R/W #03 of Hyakuri AB. It shows the F-104DJ #004 taxing back to the flight line soon after landing. This #004 was returned to the US after withdrawal from the JASDF service, and then re-delivered to the R.O.C.Air Force of Taiwan.

207th Squadron

The 207th Squadron was formed on 31MAR66 at Hyakuri, within 7th Air Wing, with F-104J as fighter interceptor squadron. The 207th was transferred from Hyakuri (7th Air Wing) to Naha, Okinawa (83rd Air Group) on 07NOV72. The 207th was the last surviving F-104 squadron within the JASDF and disbanded on 19MAR86.
The photo at left shows a tail-marking of the 207th Sqdn., which had been used during 1972-86 after they moved to Naha. The outline of this red figure is a stylized "2", the blue ellipse can be read as "Zero", and the white portion outlined in red is a stylized "7". So, this tail-marking can be read as "207" all together. The four white stars in the blue ellipse represent the Southern Cross, which can be seen only in the Okinawa area within Japan. The initial tail marking of the 207th used during 1966-72 was almost the same as that of the 206th depicted above, and the only difference was the paint color used on the stylized figure "7". The 207th used "Red" on that, while the 206th used "Blue" as shown above.

30OCT72

(above two photos)
I took the above photos at Hyakuri on 30OCT72. October 30th, 1972 was a little significant day for me in my hobby life because I started using Kodachrome II (later renamed as Kodachrome 25, KM/PKM) on that day at Hyakuri. Since 30OCT72, I had used the KM/PKM films for more than 25 years on my photography. Also, I visited Hyakuri for the first time on 30OCT72, since then I had visited Hyakuri many many times. Anyway, the 207th moved from Hyakuri to Naha on 07NOV72, and it means the 207th moved to Naha only one week after I visited Hyakuri. As you can see from the above photos, their F-104Js had already been painted light grey overall for anti-corrosion measure, and they already carried their new tail marking.

(above two photos)
I took the above photos at Komatsu on 08JUN82 during the JASDF's annual Fighter Meet held at Komatsu. The camouflage of the 207th Sqdn was two tones of darker grey overall for the 1982 Fighter Meet. Please note......(1)they did not carry wing-tip tanks, and (2) the white outline around the Japanese national roundel was NOT painted over with the grey paint. The F-104J #511 shown on the bottom photo carried a BLACK radome on the nose.

I took the above photos at Hyakuri on 28OCT84. There was another good shooting spot just outside of the fences at Hyakuri and I took the above photos from the same spot. The taxi way was so close to to the fence and I was able to take full-frame side views by using 85-100mm tele-photo lenses. Please note that the F-104J #707 (top photo) carried "silver"-painted wing-tip tank.

Air Proving Wing operated various types of JASDF aircraft including the F-104J based at Gifu. The top photo shows the APW's F-104J #549 with "Black" nose displayed at Komatsu airshow on 19MAY85. The bottom photo depicts another APW's F-104J #560 displayed at Hyakuri airshow on 28JUL85.
