Above photos show F-14As of VF-1 "Wolfpack" photographed at NAS.Miramar in August 1975.
VF-1 was formally commissioned on 14OCT72, receiving its first F-14As on 01JUL73.
The unit's first deployment with Air Wing 14 was aboard the USS.Enterprise and took place between 12SEP74 and 19MAY75.
The above photos were taken a few months after the squadron returned from its first sea-going deployment aboard the USS.Enterprise.
The photos show the earliest and the most beautiful markings of the squadron in its history.
I think the modex "124" (shown on the bottom photo) was fairly unusual among the sea-going squadrons.
The last two digits of the modex number appeared on the upper portion of the rudder, but for some reasons the F-14A "modex-124" did no carry "24" (the last two digits) on the rudder.
Please note F-8 Crusaders seen in the background of the bottom photo.

1975年8月にミラマーで撮影したVF-1 "Wolfpack"のF-14Aです。
同隊は太平洋側で最初の空母派遣トムキャット飛行隊として（公式には）14OCT72に編成され、最初のトムキャットを01JUL73に受け取っています。
その後同隊最初のクルーズを12SEP74から19MAY75に渡りUSS.Enterpriseに載って行いましたが、上の写真はその最初のクルーズから戻って約三ヶ月後の撮影でした。
機首にも派手なマーキングを描き、トムキャット飛行隊の中でも一番派手なマーキングだったように思います。
米海軍がトムキャットにかけた期待と自信の大きさが伺い知れますね。
下段写真の機体はモデックスが"124"となってますが、空母派遣飛行隊としては珍しい番号だと思います。
下段写真の背景にはF-8クルセーダーも並んでいます。この時期はミラマーに三代の主力戦闘機（F-8/F-4/F-14）が並んでいました。

Above photos show F-14As of VF-2 "Bounty Hunters" photographed at NAS.Miramar in August 1975.
As its sister squadron VF-1, the VF-2 was commissioned on 14OCT72, receiving its first F-14As in July 1973.
Above photos show the earliest markings of the VF-2.
Please note.....(1) the difference in paint scheme on the radomes between the two F-14As shown above,
(2) the fin cap on the right vertical tail was removed from the F-14A "NK-203"(bottom photo),
and (3) the tail code "NK" was painted in black shadowed with yellow.

前出の写真と同じ1975年8月にミラマーで撮影したVF-2 "Bounty Hunters"のF-14Aです。
同隊も前出のVF-1と同じ時期に編成され、同じ時期にF-14Aを受け取り、VF-1と共に初のクルーズをエンタープライズで行いました。
下段写真の"NK-203"では、右垂直尾翼のフィンキャップが整備のためか取り外されています。
上段と下段写真の二機を見比べると塗装やマーキングにいくつかの差異（下記）が有り、恐らく異なる時期に塗られたものと思います。
違いとしてまず気付くのはレドームの塗装仕様があります。"NK-214"（上段）では初期仕様のクリーム（前半分）と白にアンチグレアの黒ですが、
"NK-203"では機体色（ライトガルグレー）にアンチグレアの黒です。
更には、ベントラルフィンに"VF-2"、フィンキャップにモデックスの下二桁"03"、尾翼には母艦名が表示されているNK-203に対して、NK-214ではいずれの表記も有りません。
もっと細かい事を言えば、モデックス"203"には黄色のシャドーが入っていますが、"214"にはシャドーがありません。
勝手に想像すれば、"NK-214"はクルーズから戻って以降に他飛行隊から移管された機体なんですかねえ。

Above photo shows a F-14A "NG-200" of VF-24 "Fighting Renegades" displayed at Misawa airshow held in September 1977.
A black "9" (representing the Air Wing NINE) was at the lower portion of the rudder, and was surrounded by colored stars for the CAG markings.
Thw carrier name "USS.Constellation" for the Air Wing Nine at that time was not shown on the aircraft.

1977年の三沢航空祭に展示されたVF-24のCAG機です。
まさかのF-14、しかもCAG機の展示に当日はビックリでした。
折角のダブルナッツですがあまり派手なマーキングは有りません。
ラダーの下側に航空団番号の"9"が黒で描き込まれ、その周囲を色付きの星が取り囲んでいます。
母艦名（"USS.Constellation"）は書き込まれていません。

Above photos show F-14As of VF-124 "Gunfighters" photographed at NAS.Miramar in August 1975.
The "Gunfighters" were the West Coast fleet replenishment squadron with the task of training F-14 pilots and RIOs for the Pacific Fleet.
Above photos depicts the early F-14A models with the early style gun bay vents underneath the formation light, the early style chin pods (two types are seen),
the early style beaver tail and the early style stiffeners below the fin cap (Tamiya's 1/32 F-14 kit has mold of this early stiffeners).
Please note the extended refueling probe on the "NJ-401" shown on the middle photo.

1975年8月にミラマーで撮影したVF-124 "Gunfighters"のF-14Aです。
小生がF-14を初めて見たのはこの時ですが、あまりの『不格好』に小生の第一印象は最悪でした。
だからそれ以来、2008年にF-14のプラモデルを作るまでは、ずっと嫌いな（興味の薄い）機種でした。
プラモを作ったら大好きになりましたが、その時点ではもうF-14が全機リタイアした後でした。
現役時代にもっと沢山F-14の写真を撮っておけば良かったと、大いに後悔しました。
ところで、上の写真や前出のVF-1/2のF-14Aは、トムキャットとしては非常に初期のモデルですね。
外観的特徴をいくつか挙げれば、（１）機首下のチンポッドは二種類写っていますが、いずれも超初期モデルです。
（２）バルカン砲ガス抜きスリットの形状も一番初期のタイプです。（３）通称ビーバーテールも断面が角張った初期形状です。
（４）フィンキャップの補強用スティフナーも初期形状ですが、タミヤの1/32のキットはこの初期形状でモールドされています。
因みに、この当時のレドームはその前半分がクリーム色でした。

These photos show a F-14A of VF-124 which I photographed at El Centro in March 1990.
At that time, they carried VERY attractive black tails on their aircraft as shown on these photos.
Please note the modex "453" painted in (unusually!) yellow shadowed with black.

Above photo shows a F-14A "NJ-400" of VF-124 "Gunfighters" photographed at NAS.Pt.Mugu in October 1977.
The grey markings shown above was their standard markings at that time.
This F-14A still retained the early style gun bay vents underneath the formation light, however its chin pod and the stiffeners below the fin cap were replaced with the new style.
Please note the ECM antenna (+ tail lamp) immediately above the left rudder.

前出のブラックテール機を撮影した約半年後にポイントマグーで撮影した同隊（VF-124）のF-14Aです。
この当時このマーキングがVF-124の標準マーキングだったはずです。
本機はダブルナッツなのに、全く色気の無いマーキングです。
それでもマーキング類はほとんどダークグレーで描かれており、少しは写真映えします。
本機ではバルカン砲ガス抜きスリットがまだ一番初期型のままですが、チンポッドやフィンキャップ下のスティフナーは後期型のものに更新されています。
また、左側のラダーの直ぐ上にECMアンテナ（+尾灯）が付いています。

Above photo shows a F-14A "NF-100" of VF-154 "Black Knights" displayed at NAF.Atsugi open house in May 1996.
This CAG marking is famous among the F-14 modelers, and the "CAM decals" released the 1/32 scale decals for this CAG aircraft.
This F-14A Block-125 "161621" was relatively late model among the F-14As and the photo shows the most up-dated configuration for the F-14A.

日本のモデラーにはお馴染みのブラック・ナイツのCAG機です。こんな雑踏の中の写真しかなくて申し訳ありません。
このマーキングは世界的にも有名になったようで、『CAMデカール』から1/32のデカールが発売されています。
F-14Aには各ブロック毎やその後のレトロフィットで各部に種々の改修・変遷が認められますが、外観上はこの写真の機体がF-14Aの最終仕様だと思います。

1990年10月にポイントマグーで撮影したVX-4の二機のF-14Aです。
同じ飛行隊の所属機ですが、細かい所を見ると仕様が異なるF-14Aです。
まず"XF-41"（上段写真）ではブロック115以降に装着されたインテーク側面近くのアンテナ・フェアリング（片側に二箇所）が見られますが、"XF-34"（ブロック75）では装備されていません。
恐らくいつか後付けされたはずですが。また、バルカン砲ガス抜きスリットもブロックの違いから形状が異なります。
それ以外については外観上は同じ仕様の機体のように見えます。
