Please note....(1) all the orange markings, tail code, modex, unit designation, etc., were shadowed with black,
(2) the word "CAG" appeared in black on the fin cap, but the paint was partially came off from the fin cap surface,
and (3) the carrier name "USS.Carl Vinson" appeared in black just above the "NAVY" on the rear fuselage side.

1998年5月にNAS.Meridianのエアショーで地上展示されたVFA-94 "Mighty Shrikes"のF/A-18Cです。。
このCAG機は同隊のシンボルカラーであるオレンジで多くのマーキングが描かれていますが、オレンジ部には全て黒でシャドーが描かれています。
右垂直尾翼のフィンキャップには黒で"CAG"と描かれていますが、その部分の多くは何故か塗装が剥がれています。薄茶色の部分は何かのマーキングではありません。
また、母艦名"USS.Carl Vinson"が小さめにNAVYの上に書き込まれています。

These two F/A-18Cs flew over to Smyrna airshow in Tennessee in May 2011, and one of them was in the special CONA (Centennial Of Naval Aviation) markings.
The CONA aircraft was painted in Dark Sea Blue overall as a F6F-5 Hellcat of Bomber Fighter Squadron Seventeen (VBF-17) on USS.Hornet (CV-12) circa 1945.
The "Twobobs" released the 1/48 decal for this F/A-18 in the CONA markings.
This picture does not show it, but this F/A-18C carried the white "MARINES" stencils on the rear left side of the fuselage and the "NAVY" on the right.

上二枚の写真は2011年5月に開催されたテネシー州スマーナ空港のエアショーに飛来した二機の"VFA-106"のF/A-18Cです。
内一機は米海軍航空百周年記念（以下"CONA"と略記）の特別塗装を施していました。
この全面ダークシーブルーの機体は1945年当時USS.Hornet（CVｰ12）に搭載されていたのVBF-17のヘルキャットを模した塗装だそうです。
早速、"TWOBOBS"から1/48スケールのデカールが発売されています。この写真ではわかりませんが、胴体後部側面には右側に"MARINES"、左側に"NAVY"が白で表記されていました。
因みに、VFA-106は東海岸のFRS（転換訓練部隊）です。

2011年11月にNAS.Pensacolaのエアショーで地上展示されたVFA-122の"CONA"特別塗装機F/A-18Cです。
小生の長い米国駐在時代の中で最後に訪れたエアショーでしたが、多くのCONA塗装機が展示されていました。
正直言って小生はあまりCONA塗装が好きではなく、あまり丹念に撮影はしていません。
小生にとっては、CONA塗装に比べると昔のバイセン塗装（1976年）の方が百倍好きでした。
因みに、このCONA機はUSS.Hornet（CV-12）に搭載されていたVF-17のF6F-5ヘルキャットを模した記念塗装だそうです。

These photos show a F/A-18F of VFA-122 painted in the digital camouflage (or new Navy Working Uniform) scheme with special CONA (Centennial Of Naval Aviation) markings.
When I photographed this aircraft, I wondered how modelers can finish this paint scheme on their models.
Sometime later, I found that the "Syh@rt Decal" released a 1/72 scale decal sheet for this paint scheme.

上五枚の写真は前出のCONA写真と同じく、2011年11月のNAS.Pensacolaのエアショーで地上展示されたVFA-122の"CONA"記念塗装機（F/A-18F）です。
このデジタル風迷彩は米海軍の新作業用ユニフォームの生地パターンを模したようです。
色々出てきたCONA塗装機の中で小生が一番気に入ったCONA記念塗装機です。
垂直尾翼にはちゃんとテールコードの"NJ"が隠れています。
こんな塗装機はとてもプラモデルにならないと思っていたら、"Syh@rt Decal"からデカールが発売されました。
ほとんど塗装しなくても完成しそうです。
因みに、VFA-122は西海岸のFRS（転換訓練部隊）です。

1990年10月にNAS.Pt.Muguで撮影した西海岸FRS飛行隊（転換訓練部隊）VF-125のF/A-18Cです。
この当時はUSN/USMCの飛行場へ行くと、F-18やF-14のほとんどが全く色気の無いロービジ機ばかりで面白くなく、小生の足はUSN/USMCの飛行場からどんどん遠ざかりました。
この写真の機体も全く面白味が無いですね。後部胴体側面（NAVYの直ぐ上）にうっすらと"VFA-125"の表記があります。

These photos show a F/A-18A (CAG bird) of VFA-137 "Kestrels" parked on the transit ramp of Luke AFB in November 1992.
The badge for the Carrier Air Wing SIX (aboard USS.Forrestal) appeared on the outboard surface of the left vertical tail as shown on the photo at left.
Please note.....(1) the "NAVY" stencils painted just above the formation light on the rear fuselage side and (2) the black nose of the fuel tank under the fuselage.

1992年11月にたまたまルークAFBの外来機ランプで見付けたVF-137のダブルナッツ機です。これは予想外の収穫でした。
右と左の垂直尾翼でそれぞれ別々のマーキングになっているのも面白いです。
右側は通常の同隊のテールマーキングですが、左側のエンブレムはCarrier Air Wing SIX (USS.Forrestal)のマークです。
後部胴体側面の"NAVY"の表記は編隊灯パネルの下に付けられるのが一般的（非常に多い）ですが、この機体ではパネルの上に描かれています。
また、増槽タンクの前端が黒（ダークグレー？）に塗られています。

The unit was operated aboard USS.Midway (CVW-5) at that time, and their shore base was NAF.Atsugi which is fairly close to Yokosuka naval port.

Bottom photo shows a CAG bird of VFA-195 "Dam Busters" displayed at Misawa open house in September 1987.
This aircraft did not carry any special CAG markings at all.
VA-195 "Dam Busters" transitioned from A-7 to F/A-18A in 1985 and the unit designation was changed to VFA-195.

下の写真のF/A-18Aはダブルナッツ機なんですが、何の色気も有りません。この当時が我々マニアにとって米海軍機の一番の暗黒時代だったでしょうか。

1997年6月のNAS.Atlanta（Dobbins AFB）エアショーで地上展示された海軍予備役VFA-203のF/A-18Aです。
アグレッサー迷彩を施したホーネットを見たのはこの時が初めてだったと記憶しています。
そこで良く見ると、予備役飛行隊でしかもアグレッサー迷彩機なのに、何と母艦名（"USS JOHN F KENNEDY"）が反転迷彩色で描かれているんです。
本当にこの迷彩機が空母に載ってクルーズに行ったのかどうか、小生には良くわかりません。
この写真を撮影した14JUN97時点では、JFKは地中海に出ていたはずですが。
胴体下の増槽タンクには飛行隊のニックネームである"Blue Dolphins"の文字が見えます。

2011年9月にテネシー州ミリントン空港（元NAS.Memphis）のエアショーで地上展示された予備役飛行隊VFA-204"River Rattlers"のCONA記念塗装機です。
全面ダークシーブルーのこの塗装は1950年当時の予備役飛行隊のF4Uコルセアを模した記念塗装だそうです。
どうやらポイントは尾翼の"X"とオレンジ色の胴体バンドのようです。
それはわかっても、この機体からはとても往年のコルセアを想像することが出来ません。
それはそれとして、同隊のホームベースであるニューオルリンズの基地名が胴体側面に、また同隊のニックネーム"River Rattlers"の文字が増槽タンク側面に描かれています。
エンジン排気管に掛けられているカバーが青色にオレンジの縁取りとなっています。これは前出のVFA-204CAG機と同じ同隊のシンボルカラーです。

In 1993, VX-4 and VX-5 were merged into a single operational test and evaluation squadron designated as VX-9 (4+5=9??).
A photo at above left shows the tail markings of the "old" VX-5 squadron, which was one of the special CONA (Centennial Of Naval Aviation) paint scheme.

米海軍の開発テスト飛行隊であったVX-4（テールコード"XF"）とVX-5（テールコード"XE"）が1993年頃に統合されて、VX-9（4+5=9の意味ですかねえ？）に改編されました。
上左の尾翼マーキングはかつてのハイビジ時代のVX-5のマーキングで、米海軍航空百周年の記念塗装として塗られたものと思います。

These photos should be the most interesting photos in my website.
These photos show a F/A-18C of VMFA-323 "Death Rattlers" displayed at El Toro airshow in May 1993.
Please note the "mistakenly-stencilled" Bureau Number "146722" (instead of 164722) painted on the right side of the rear fuselage as shown on the photos above.
This aircraft was a C/O's jet with colorful squadron markings.
Please note also that the layout of the yellow diamonds superimposed on the brown tail stripe, which represented the squadron number "3-2-3".
I mean, a total of eight yellow stars were placed "THREE stars", space, "TWO stars", space "THREE stars" on the brown tail stripe.
By the way,the unit converted from F-4N to F/A-18A in 1983 at MCAS.El Toro.

1993年5月の加州エルトロ海兵隊航空基地で開催されたエアショーに地上展示された、VMFA-323の隊長機、F/A-18Cです。
恐らくこれら写真が、このホームページで一番珍しい（と言うか面白い）写真だと思います。
と言うのも、ビュロー・ナンバーが間違えて表示されているんです。
胴体左側面には正しいBuNo.164722が表示されていますが、右側面では"6"と"4"をひっくり返して、何と"146722"と表記されています。
我々マニアだったら、直感的にこの間違いに気が付きますがねえ。
因みに、BuNo.146722はF3H-2 Demonに与えられているようです。
又、茶色のテールストライプに描かれた計8個の黄色い星は、飛行隊番号の（VMFA）3-2-3に合わせて、3個、2個、3個の星の間にスペースが設けられています。
この発想は空自のテールマーキングの発想に似ていますね。
因みに、VMFA-323は1983年にここエルトロでF-4NからF/A-18Aに機種改編されました。

A couple of F/A-18As from VMFA-451 flew over to NAF.Atsugi from MCAS.Iwakuni to attend to the static display for the airshow held in May 1996.
Please note that the layout of the black/grey stars on the tail (a total of ten stars) represented the squadron number "4-5-1".
I mean, "FOUR" black stars are placed below the formation light panel on the fin, "FIVE" grey stars on the black shevron and finally "ONE" black star in front of the chevron.
By the way,the unit converted from F-4J to F/A-18A in 1987 at MCAS.Beaufort.

これだけ濃いグレー（それとも黒？）でマーキングを描いてくれると、ロービジ機でも写真映りが良くなりますね。
この部隊のテールマーキングにも部隊番号の（VMFA）4-5-1が星の数で描かれています。
編隊灯パネルの下に四つの星、シェブロンの中に五つの星、そしてシェブロンの直ぐ前に一つの星が描かれています。
因みに、VMFA-451は1987年にビューフォートでF-4JからF/A-18Aに機種改編されました。

The F/A-18D shown on the bottom photo was a double-nuts (VK-"00") but it did not carry any special (nor colored) markings at all on the aircraft.

上段写真の機体には増槽タンクにダークグレーで何やらマーキングが描かれていますが、何か判明しません。
いずれの機体にも前部胴体下面（前輪周辺）に欺瞞用キャノピーがダークグレーで描かれています。
又、後部胴体の"MARINES"の文字の大きさが二機で異なる（上のVK-04がちょっとデカイ）のが気になりました。
プラモに貼るデカールの大きさもある程度いい加減で良さそうですね。

因みに、VMFA(AW)-121は1990年にEl ToroでA-6EからF/A-18Dに機種改編されました。

Above photo shows a F/A-18Ds from VMFA(AW)-225 "Vagabonds" displayed at Atsugi airshow in May 1996.
Another F/A-18D of the same squadron is seen in the background on display side by side, and the background aircraft carried a little darker tail markings for the "Vagabonds".
By the way,the unit was reactivated as VMFA(AW)-225 in July 1991 and equipped with the F/A-18D in February 1992.

1996年5月の厚木公開日に地上展示された、VMFA(AW)-225"Vagabonds"のF/A-18Dです。
背景に写るもう一機のF/A-18Dと一緒に展示されましたが、隣の機体の方がテールマーキングがより濃いグレーで描かれていて、少しは見栄えがいいです。
因みに、VMFA(AW)-225は長らく活動を停止していたA-6部隊のVMA(AW)-225が再編成されたもので、1992年からF/A-18Dが配備されました。
