Mitsubishi F-1

The F-1 is a single-seat strike fighter version of the T-2 supersonic trainer; in fact the F-1 prototype, designated FS-T-2-KAI, were two T-2 airframes converted on the assembly line. The first F-1 made its first flight from Mitsubishi's Komaki Plant on 16JUN77. A total of 77 F-1s were delivered to JASDF and three Sabre squadrons, the 3rd/6th/8th Sqdns, were re-equipped with Mitsubishi F-1 during 1977-80. After 20-25 years, the F-1s were gradually phased out from active service and the last surviving batch of the F-1 (6 F-1s of the 6th Sqdn) made the last flight on 09MAR06 at Tsuiki. All three F-1 Sqdns were re-equipped with Mitsubishi F-2 during 1997-2006. The F-1 was the first JASDF type to standardise on the tactical camouflage scheme of dark green, green and tan with light grey undersides.

3rd Squadron

The 3rd Sqdn was originally a F-86F Sabre squadron formed on 01OCT56. The 3rd began re-equipment with Mitsubishi F-1 in September 1977 and reached its full complement of F-1 in March 1978. The 3rd Sqdn was re-equipped with Mitsubishi F-2 on 27MAR01 and the unit is still in active service with F-2 at Misawa under the 3rd Air Wing. A photo at above left shows the tail marking carried on F-1s at the beginning. This was an old marking for the 3rd Air Wing used until 1983. The left hand larger part of the marking is a stylized "3" meaning the "3"rd Air Wing. The right hand smaller part of the marking is a stylized representation of the outline of Aomori Prefecture where Misawa AB, the home of the 3rd Air Wing, is located. A photo at above right shows the tail marking for the 3rd Sqdn, which was adopted in August 1983. This is a KABUTO or a Samurai's helmet, which came from the squadron badge of the 3rd.

I took the above two photos of F-1 #245 at Misawa airshow on 06SEP81. The #245 depicted on the top photo was taxing out from the ramp for the demo-flight for the airshow. The bottom photo show the #245 taxing back to the ramp after landing from the demo-flight. A photo of the demo(nine-ship formation) flight is shown on the top of this page.

(above & at left)
These photos show the F-1 #259 in experimental camouflage scheme. Tan area of the standard camouflage scheme was sprayed over by dark blue paint, and it looked like the USAF's European I camouflage. The tail marking (Samurai's helmet) was slightly over-sprayed by dark paint as shown on the photo at left. Please note that the first three digits of the serial number (10-8) was re-painted on the fin in much smaller/finer style. Also the last three digits of the serial number (#259) appeared on the nose were shadowed with (most likely) tan, which was the original camouflage color on that area. This F-1 #259 participated in the JASDF's annual Fighter Meet held in December 1988.

6th Squadron

The 6th Sqdn was originally a F-86F Sabre squadron formed on 01AUG59. The 6th began re-equipment with Mitsubishi F-1 on 11MAR80 and the last two F-86Fs left the squadron in November 1980. The 6th Sqdn was re-equipped with Mitsubishi F-2 on 27MAR01 and the unit is still in active service with F-2 at Tsuiki under the 8th Air Wing. The tail marking of the 6th Sqdn (bow, arrow and two swords crossed together) came from the squadron badge of the 6th Sqd.

This F-1 #209 was displayed at Nyutabaru airshow in November 1989. This aircraft was camouflaged in two tones of dark grey, which was prepared for the JASDF's annual Fighter Meet held in 1989. Please note that the nose number (#209) was shadowed with white (?). Red lightning marking on the fin represented the old tail marking of the 8th Air Wing carried by their F-86Fs.

8th Squadron

.
The 8th Sqdn was originally a F-86F Sabre squadron formed on 29OCT60. The 8th began re-equipment with Mitsubishi F-1 in June 1979, becoming a pure F-1 squadron on 29FEB80. The 3rd Sqdn was re-equipped with F-4EJ-Kai in March 1997. The 8th Sqdn was again re-equipped with Mitsubishi F-2 in 2008, and the 8th is still in active service under the 3rd Air Wing at Misawa with F-2.
A photo at above left shows the tail marking carried on F-1s at the beginning. This was an old marking for the 3rd Air Wing used until 1983. A photo at above right shows the new/current tail marking for the 8th, which was adopted in August 1983. This is a black panther, which is a nick-name (it's a "Panther", actually) for the 8th Sqdn. This panther marking was designed by Yasuda-san of the 8th Sqdn at that time.
