304th Squadron 第304飛行隊
The 304th Sqdn was formed on 01AUG77 at Tsuiki within
the 8th Air Wing as a fighter interceptor squadron.
The 304th was re-equipped with F-15J on 20JAN90, and
the 304th is still in active service with F-15J at Tsuiki.
There is a Mount "Ehiko" near Tsuiki AB, the home of
the 304th, and there is an old tale of "Tengu" or
a long-nosed goblin of Mt.Ehiko. So, the tail marking
of the 304th is a Tengu-mask of Mt.Ehiko.
A photo at left shows crew men posed in front of their
F-4EJ #385 soon after completing their training flight.

I took the above photos at Tsuiki in 1979/81. Top and middle photos show F-4EJs taxing back to their ramp
soon after landing. Please note the F-4EJ #426 (at middle) carried a A/A-37U-15 reel pod for a dart target
under the left wing.

These photos shows F-4EJs camouflaged in light blue and dark blue for the JASDF's annual Fighter Meet held
at Komatsu in June 1982. I took the top photo at Komatsu during the 1982 Fighter Meet. The remainning two
photos were taken at Tsuiki (a home of the 304th) in the following year. They retained their blue camouflage
even after returning from the Fighter Meet.

開催地であった小松で写しました。中段と下段の２枚は翌83年の8月に、築城のR/W25エンドの近くの堤防で
写しました。最下段の406号機はその後RF-4EJへの改修1号機（試改修機）となり、青系の迷彩を施されて
1992年に百里へ配備されました。

The top photos shows F-4EJ #361 in blue camouflage for the JASDF's annual Fighter Meet in 1982. Please
note that this a/c has a grey shark mouth on the nose. The photo immediate above shows another camouflaged
F-4EJ displayed at Tsuiki airshow in November 1983. This different camouflage scheme was prepared for the
JASDF's annual Fighter Meet of the following year (1983).

305th Squadron 第305飛行隊
The 305th Sqdn was formed on 01DEC78 at Hyakuri within the 7th Air
Wing as a fighter interceptor squadron. The 305th was re-equipped
with F-15J on 02AUG93, and the 305th is still in active service
with F-15J at Hyakuri.
As mentioned above, the 305th is based at Hyakuri, which is located
near the city of Mito, and there is a famous Japanese-style plum
garden named "Kairaku-en" in Mito. So, the tail marking for the 305th
is a plum flower of the Kairaku-en as shown at left photo.

The above photos shows F-4EJs in the standard grey/white scheme taxing at Hyakuri AB. The top photo shows
F-4EJ #427 and another one (serial unknown) taxing back to the ramp soon after releasing their drag chutes.
A F-4EJ #362 shown at middle carried colorful(orange) dart target under the left wing. A F-4EJ #323 shown
at bottom was armed with a couple of AIM-9P under the inboard pylons.

I took these three photos at Hyakuri airshow on 25OCT81. The top two (#427 & #423) F-4EJs were camouglaged in
dark blue over the standard grey/white scheme which were prepared for the JASDF's annual Fighter Meet held at
Chitose in November 1980. The bottom photo shows a F-4EJ #332 in experimental camouglage scheme.....dark blue
upper surfaces and light blue under surfaces.

で迷彩された80年戦競機です。最下段の332号機は試験的にのみ塗装された機体のようですが、機体上面はかなり

Such colorful F-4EJ was used for air combat training within the same aircraft type. The photo immediate above

Top and middle taxing shots above show F-4EJ (#352 & #359) camouflaged in light grey and light blue.
The camouflage patterns of these two were very similar but the border line of the pattern on the #352
looked more distinct and clear. The bottom photo shows F-4EJ #332 camouflaged in grey overall, which
participated in the JASDF's annual Fighter Meet held at Chitose in November 1985.
(上3枚）最上段の352号機と中段の359号機は同じ日に百里の『くノ一』で写しました。両機の迷彩を比較
すると、同じような雲形迷彩パターンのようですが、352号機の方がパターンの境界線が明瞭に見えます。
それは光線の当たり方（反射の仕方）の違いによるものと思います。両機が使っている迷彩色も類似して
いるようで、薄い水色と薄いグレーです。最下段の写真は1985年戦競に参加した全面グレーの332号機です。
306th Squadron 第306飛行隊
The 306th Sqdn was the last F-4EJ squadron formed on
30JUN81 at Komatsu within the 6th Air Wing as a fighter
interceptor squadron. The 305th was re-equipped with
F-15J on 18MAR97, and the 305th is still in active service
with F-15J at Komatsu.
The tail marking for the 306th is a "Inu-washi" or
Golden-Eagle which inhabits the high mountains in
Ishikawa-Pref., where Komatsu AB is located. The
outline of the Inu-washi's eye is the same shape as
the earlier marking of the 205th Sqdn, because the 205th
was a mother squadron of the 306th.

These colorful F-4EJs were used primarily for air combat manoeuvre training (fly as an enemy plane)
and for target towing missions. A F-4EJ #394 shown immediate above carried range fuselage band and
orange wing tips, but as you can see from the photo, the orange paint was badly weathered already
All three photos were taken at Komatsu AB, the home of the 306th.

最下段の394号機についてはオレンジ塗装がヒドく退色しています。本機は上２枚のオレンジ塗装機と
違い、垂直尾翼はオレンジに塗られていません。又、同機（394号機）は324号機（中段写真）と違い
主翼上面（内翼側）はオレンジに塗られていないようです。

These are my favourite splinter camouglage of the 306th Sqdn. They developped various patterns of
their original splinter camouflage. Japanese photographers at that time were so excited at these
variety of splinter camouflage. Very attractive camouflage for modelers too. The top two photos
were taken at Komatsu during the JASDF's annual Fighter Meet held in June 1982. Please note the
#335 shown immediate above carried five white stars on inlet ramp, which meant five "Kills" during
the air combat missions.

合わせて増槽タンクも個別に迷彩塗装がなされていたようです。最下段の335号機は移動訓練先の築城

Top photo shows a F-4EJ #440, which is the last production F-4EJ license-built by Mitsubishi, in
blue splinter camouflage. Please note that the border line of the camouflage pattern was "soft"
on this aircraft. The photo immediate above shows a F-4EJ #328 camouflaged in non-splinter pattern
painted in three tones of blue.

（くノ一）で撮影しました。当時スプリンター迷彩を多用していた306飛行隊が新たに開発した曲線迷彩
の一例が下段写真の328号機です。スプリンター迷彩機に比べるとちょっと塗装作業が乱雑に見えます。
使っている塗装色は他のスプリンター迷彩機と同じように思われます。

This #347 was a C/O's F-4EJ participated in the
JASDF's annual Fighter Meet held in June 1984. Two red stars outlined in yellow meant the
Commanding Officer of the 306th Squadron.
Please note a nose gear door painted in black
and white, which represented the false canopy.
Inside of the shark mouth was painted in dark blue/upper and red/lower.

347号機です。インテークランプに描かれた二つの
星は飛行隊長機のマークと思います。前脚カバー
は白黒に塗り分けられていて、欺瞞キャノピー
になっているようです。目玉と鮫口の中の下半分

This #338 was camouflaged in similar fashion as
the #347 shown one above, however the camouflage
color (dark blue) on the #338 was a little lighter
than the color of the #347. "TSUKA" and "KID"
shown on the inlet ramp were TAC names (call sign)
of the crews. Please note an inverted color pattern
on the fin between #338 and #347.

です。迷彩パターンはひとつ上の写真の347号機
と類似していますが、上面の青はこの338号機の
方が少し明るい色です。垂直尾翼の迷彩配色は
347号機とは逆転しているのが面白いです。鮫口
の中は347号機のように赤は使われていませんが
目玉は同じ赤です。インテークランプに書かれた
"TSUKA"と"KID"はTACネームなのでしょう。

Top photo shows a F-4EJ #388 which participated in the JASDF's annual Fighter Meet held in November
1984. The fuselage surfaces were painted in unique fashion.....touch-up-style spray paint of dark grey
over the base coat of light grey. Large area of the wing was painted in dark bluish grey. The bottom
photo shows a F-4EJ #395, which also participated in the JASDF's annual Fighter Meet held in November
1984. This photo was taken in 1986, so the camouflage paint was badly weathered already.

を写したのは戦競から２年近く経過しており、塗装はヒドく退色が進んでいます。この395号機も主翼上下
面はかなり広い範囲に濃いグレーで塗られているようです。主脚カバーも濃いグレーになっています。

A F-4EJ #306 was painted in special color scheme in 1986. Komatsu AB (a home of the 306th) celebrated
its 25th anniversary in 1986 and this #306 was in special color scheme for the 25th anniversary. This
paint scheme represented, as you can see from the photo, an Inu-washi (golden eagle) which is a symbol
for the 306th Sqdn. The F-4EJ #"306" was chosen for this special aircraft simply because its serial #
(the last three digits) was the same as the squadron number "306".

This is a F-4EJ"Kai" #379 displayed at Yokota open house on 23JUL95. This aircraft participated in the
JASDF's annual Fighter Meet in 1995. A Kanji (Chinese) character seen on the inlet ramp is "KAI" meaning
F-4EJ"Kai". The followings are noticable external differences between F-4EJ and F-4EJ-Kai.
(1) Twin aft-facing radomes at the rear end of the fin cap for F-4EJ Kai
(2) Much taller blade antenna (AN/AC-164 UHF) on the top(center) of the fuselage spine for F-4EJ Kai
(3) Strengthening ribs on radome for F-4EJ Kai
(4) 610-US gal F-15 fuel tank, stressed to higher "g" for F-4EJ Kai
(5) Slotted stabilator for F-4EJ Kai
(6) Small J/APR-6 antennas at the wing tips (both sides & facing forward) for F-4EJ Kai
(7) Tail light at the tailcone for F-4EJ Kai
