Top photo shows the 4th TFW "Boss Bird" flown by Col.Chuck Yeager on final at Yokota on 17FEB70.
The 4th TFW at that time controlled three F-4D squadrons, 334TFS (coded "SA"), 335TFS ("SB") and 336TFS ("SC") at Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina,
and the 334th(SA) and 335th(SB) deployed to Kunsan, South Korea, betwee December 1969 and May 1970.
They sometimes visited Yokota and I was able to take some photos of them at Yokota.
Please not the fin cap colors of the top photo.
The forward 1/3 portion was painted in blue with three rows of white dots, which represented the 334TFS(SA).
The center 1/3 portion was painted in green with an indian head marking, which represented the 335TFS(SB).
The rear 1/3 portion was painted in yellow with blue stars, which represented the 336TFS(SC).
I was VERY lucky enough to photograph the Col.Chuck Yeager's Boss Bird.
The middle and bottom photos show F-4Ds of the 334th TFS (coded "SA") with blue fin cap with white dots.
Drop tank caps were also painted in blue.
（上3枚）最上段の写真は当時4th TFWの司令であったイェーガー大佐の乗機です。
4TFWはノースカロライナ州Seymour Johnsonをベースとし、F-4Dの三個飛行隊（334TFS/テールコード"SA", 335TFS/"SB", 336TFS/"SC")をコントロールしていました。
その内の二個飛行隊（SAとSB）が1969年12月から翌70年5月にかけて群山へTDY派遣されました。
よって、小生が横田に通い始めた頃に、SAとSBのF-4Dが時々横田へ飛来していました。
イェーガー大佐機のフィンキャップは指揮下三個飛行隊のスコードロンカラーで塗り分けられています。
フィンキャップの前1/3は青地に白の斑点で334TFS（SA）のシンボルカラーです。
中央の1/3は緑地にインディアンのマークが描かれており、これが335TFS（SB）の部隊マークです。
後尾の1/3は黄色地の上に青の星が散りばめられており、336TFSを表しています。

Soon after two F-4D squadrons (coded SA & SB) returned from Kunsan to Seymour Johnson AFB in May 1970,
two F-4E squadrons deployed to Kunsan in return for six months from May 1970.
They were 16th TFS (33TFW) with tail code "ED" from Eglin AFB, Florida,
and 478th TFS (4531TFW) with tail code "ZE" from Homestead AFB, Florida.
Fin cap color of the ED-coded F-4E was blue and white,
and the ZE-coded F-4E had a blue fin cap.
A B-727 of "Southern Air Transport" is seen in the background on the photo immediate above.
It was natural metal overall and it was believed to be used as CIA support.
B-727s of the Southern Air Transport were seen at Yokota quite frequently in 1970.

SA/SBコードのF-4D二個飛行隊が1970年5月に群山から米本土へ引き揚げると、
入れ替わりにED/ZEコードのF-4Eが半年間のローテーションでフロリダ州からTDY派遣されてきました。
これらは小生が初めて見たF-4Eでした。
これら二個飛行隊はEglin AFBから派遣された16th TFS (テールコード"ED"）と、Homestead AFBから派遣された478th TFS (テールコード"ZE"）でした。
フィンチップの色は"ED"が青と白、"ZE"が青です。
白黒写真しか無いのが悔やまれます。
下段写真の左奥背景に"Southern Air Transport"社のB-727が見えます。全面無塗装の同社B-727はCIAのサポート業務を行っていたと言われています。
当時横田ではよく目にしました。

When I visited Luke AFB, Arizona in August 1975, the 58th Tactical Fighter Training Wing undertook crew training with "so many" F-4Cs at Luke.
All the above photos show F-4Cs of 426th TFTS (58th TFTW) with green fin tips.
Please note the SUU-20 (four rocket/six bomblets) dispenser under the inboard wing show on the middle photo.
A photo at left shows the emblem of the 58th Tactical Fighter Training Squadron.

1975年8月にアリゾナ州Luke空軍基地を訪問した時に写した426th TFTS (58th TFTW）のF-4Cです。
同飛行隊のフィンキャップの色（スコードロンカラー）は緑なので、迷彩色の中でほとんど目立ちません。
写真の背景を見ていただければ想像できますが、とにかくだだっ広いエプロンに四個飛行隊、百機近くのF-4Cがウジャウジャと駐機しています。
テールコードは全て"LA"で、唯一の違いは飛行隊別のフィンキャップの色ぐらいです。
いくらファントムが好きな小生でもかなり食傷気味となり、数機の写真を撮っただけで引き揚げてしまいました。
とにかく暑かったんです。
中段写真のF-4Cの内翼パイロンにはSUU-20ディスペンサー（ロケット弾4発・訓練爆弾6発）が装備されています。
それまでPACAFのF-4を見慣れた目には、白い注意書き（ステンシル）が沢山書き込まれたルークのF-4Cにはちょっと違和感がありました。

George Phantoms in 1990-91
F-4E 72-0141(GA) "831 AD" 21st TFTS/35TFW @ George 09MAR90

Top photo shows a F-4E 72-0141 assigned to the 21st TFTS, 35th TFW and marked as the 831st Air Division Commander's jet based at George AFB.
The 831st Air Division had administrative control over the 35th TFW(F-4E) and 37th TFW(F-4G) at George AFB, California, in the mid-1980s.
On 05OCT89, the both Wings (35th & 37th) consolidated all operations under the newly redesignated 35th TFW.
So, when I visited George AFB in March 1990, the 831st AD controlled over the 35TFW, which controlled over a total of four Phantom squadrons,
20th TFTS(F-4E, coded "GA"), 21st TFTS(F-4E,"GA"), 561st TFS(F-4G, "WW") and 562nd TFTS(F-4G/E, "WW").
Please note.....(1) "GA" tail code, "831AD" and the serial # were dark grey shadowed in white,
(2) the four squadron badges are seen on the intake side, which represented all for squadrons controlled under the 831AD/35TFW.
Four colors(black/yellow/silver/blue) on the fin cap also represented the four squadrons operated under the 831AD/35TFW.
Please note also the AN/ARN-101 antennas at the rear end of the fin cap.

1990年3月にGeorge AFBで撮影した35th TFW、21st TFTSのF-4Eですが、831st Air Divisionの司令官機に指定されていました。
831ADは1980年代のほぼ全般に渡りF-4E装備の35TFWと、F-4G装備の37TFWをその指揮下に置いてましたが、
05OCT89に両TFWは合体して35TFWが存続航空団となった為、上の写真を撮った時点では831ADが管轄する航空団は35TFWのみとなっていました。
同航空団の指揮下にはテールコードGAのF-4Eの二個飛行隊（20TFTS, 21TFTS）とテールコードWWのF-4Gの二個飛行隊（561TFS, 562TFTS）がありました。
上写真の機体のエアインテーク側面には上述の四個飛行隊のユニットバッヂが貼り付けてあります。
またインテークカバーにもこれら飛行隊のパッチの他、35TFW（一番上）と35th Tac.Trng.Sqdn（一番下；詳細不明）のパッチが貼ってありました。
フィンキャップにもこれら四個飛行隊のスコードロンカラー（前から黒・黄・銀・紺）が描かれています。
またフィンキャップ後端にはAN/ARN-101の棒状アンテナが後付けされています。
指令機らしくテールコードやシリアル等には白のシャドーが付いています。

The 35th TFW became the host unit for George AFB when the 831st Air Division (mentioned above) there inactivated on 31MAR91,
it was only four months before the above photo was taken in July 1991.
The above photos shows the 35th TFW Commander's jet.
Please note.....(1) the tail code "WW" and the "3TFW" were shadowed with white,
(2) the four fin cap colors (black/yellow/silver/blue) representing four F-4 squadrons within the 35th TFW,
(3) the five squadron badges appeared on the intake saide.

Both of the above photos show the F-4Es for the Commander 20th Tactical Fighter Training Squadron.
I took the top photo in March 1990 and the bottom photo in July of the following year.
Please note the unit description of "20TFTS/AMU" in dark grey shadowed with white on the fin on both of the aircraft.
The fin cap was painted in silver with the unit nickname "LOBOS".

The above three photos shows "German" F-4Es operated under the 20th TFTS at George AFB for German crew training.
All German F-4Es displayed German flag colors of black, red and yellow at tail band (fin cap).
Please note......(1) the F-4E shown in the top photo displayed "1ST GAFTS" on the fin, which possibly stood for 1st German Air Force Training Squadron???
(2) the F-4E dipicted on the middle photo carried AIM-9 Sidewinders under the inboard pylons.
(3) the F-4E shown on the bottom photo carried blue bombs with triple ejecter racks under the inboard wing.
(4) most top portion of the fin cap was painted in silver, the squadron color of the "Lobos".

上三枚の写真はドイツ空軍クルーの飛行訓練を行っていたドイツ空軍のF-4Eで、フィンキャップにそれを表すドイツの国旗色（黒･赤･黄）が描かれています。
因みに、フィンキャップの一番上は20TFTSを表すスコードロンカラーの銀に塗られています。エアインテークの左側面は20TFTSの部隊バッジです。
最上段の写真に写るF-4Eの尾翼には"1ST GAFTS"の表記がありますが、これは1st German Air Force Training Squadronの略ではないかと思います。
そだとしても、"1ST"の意味が小生にはわかりません。中段写真のF-4EにはAIM-9サイドワインダーの青いキャプティブ弾が見えます。
また、最下段の写真のF-4Eは左右のTERを介して計六発の青い訓練爆弾が装着されています。左内翼にTISEOを装備した機体ですね。

The above two photos show F-4Es of the 21st TFTS "CHEETAHS" under 35th TFW at George AFB.
The F-4E depicted on the top photo displayed "21TSTS/AMU" (in dark grey shadowed with white) on the fin representing the Commander's jet.
Fin cap was painted in black with the unit nickname "CHEETAHS" in white.
Please note a few small practice bombs in blue under the inboard wing pylon seen in the photo immediate above.
Please note also the AN/ARN-101 antennas at the rear end of the fin cap seen on the top photo,
while the F-4E depicted on the photo immediate above did NOT have such antennas.

The above two photos show squadron commanders' F-4Gs of the 561st TFS (top photo) and the 562nd TFTS (bottom photo) controlled under the 35th TFW at George AFB.
Both F-4Gs displayed their unit designations "561TFS/AMU" and "562TFTS/AMU" on the fin which were shadowed with white.
Fin caps were painted in their unit colors in yellow for the 561TFS and in blue for the 562TFTS.
Each respective squadron badge was shown on the left intake side.
During Operation Desert Storm, which started 17JUL91, the 561st TFS flew 1,182 combat sorties on their F-4Gs for a total of 4,393 hours.
The Wing's people began returning to George AFB on 23MAR91 with its aircraft and crews following three days later.

They arranged monthly photo tour at George AFB at that time for crazy photographers like me and I attended the photo tour twice (March 1990 & July 1991).
The George's F-4 photos I used on this page were taken during these exciting photo tours.
1990〜1991年当時、George AFBの広報班は小生のような飛行機マニア向けに原則毎月１回写真ツアーを企画していて、
ゲート前に集合したマニア連中をバスに乗せてフライトラインに連れて行ってくれました。
勿論写真は撮り放題で、各飛行隊の列線前でバスから降りて写真を撮らせてくれました。

F-4E 72-144(ET) 3247th Test Sqdn 3246th Test Wing @ Buckley ANGB 17FEB90

I took the above photos on the transit ramp at Buckley ANGB, Colorado, in February 1990.
The 3247th Test Squadron was based at Eglin AFB, Florida, with tail code "ET". Aircraft types noted with the "ET" tail code include; A-10, F-15, F-16, F-111, T-38, etc.
The emblem of the 3246th Test Wing was carried on the left intake side and the emblem of the Air Foece Systems Command was shown on the fin.
Please note the AN/ARN-101 antennas at the rear end of the fin cap, as pointed by white arrows on the photo immediate above.
The CT-43 (B-737) of the Colorado ANG is seen on the background of the top photo.

これらの写真は1990年2月にコロラド州Buckley ANGBの外来機列線で写しました。お隣りの外来機はTAW-5のT-34Cです。クロスカントリーの訓練なのでしょう。
また上段写真の右奥後ろには当地をベースとするコロラド州空軍所属のCT-43が見えます。
このF-4Eは3247th Test Squadronに所属しており、ベースはフロリダ州Eglin AFBです。
ETのテールコードを付けた機種はF-4E以外にも数多く確認されていて、A-10, F-15, F-16, F-111, T-38からヘリコプター類までいました。
左エアインテーク側面のエンブレムは3246th Test Wingのもので、尾翼にはエドワーズの機体などでよく見かけるAir Foece Systems Commandのエンブレムが付いています。
フィンキャップの後端にはAN/ARN-101のアンテナが三本（白矢印）突き出ていますが、このアンテナが後付けされたF-4Eはあまり多くないような気がします。

This old F-4C could be a "already-retired" aircraft from active service at Edwards.

The above photos show a F-4G #69-235 "OT", Detachment 5 - 4485th Test Squadron, Tactical Air Warfare Center, photographed at George AFB in July 1991.
Please note the checkered fin cap and the shadow tail code "OT" & "DET 23-5" on the fin.
Please note also a small unknown pod seen under the right jet-intake.
The TAWC badge was seen on the right intake side.

この写真は1991年7月のGeorge AFBフォトツアーで写したちょっと珍しいF-4Gです。
本機は4485th Test Squadronの第五分遣隊(DET-5）所属で、どうやらGeorgeをベースにしていた分遣隊のようです。
他にも2〜3機の"OT"コードのF-4Gが並んでいました。（下の写真参照）
本機はその親分のようで、テールコード"OT"や"DET 5"に白のシャドーが入っていました。
又、スパローの右前の溝下には何やら砲弾型のポッドが吊るされていました。
このポッドにも同隊のチェッカーマーキングがフィンキャップと同様に描かれていました。
右下端の写真は同隊が所属するTactical Air Warfare Centerのエンブレムです。

F-4E 68-309(TH) 457TFS/301TFW AFRES @ Carswell AFB 09MAR91

I took these photos at Carswell AFB, in Texas, in March 1991 during the Phancon'91.
The "TH"-coded F-4E was operated by the 457TFS/301TFW (AFRes) based at Carswell, and the 457th was the host unit for the Phancon'91.
The unit once operated the F-105D (including T-Stick II) at Carswell, and the unit converted to F-4D in 1981 and to F-4E in 1987.
The Phantom era ended for the 457th TFS during spring 1991 and this was the reasons why this F-4E carried special markings on the fuselage "1981-1991 Phantom Pharewell".
The unit converted to F-16A/B with the new tail code "TF" meaning "Texas Falcons" soon after this photo was taken.

所属はAFResの457TFS/301TFWですが、同隊は当地Carswell AFBをホームベースとしており、ファンコン'91のホストユニットを務めました。

. RF-4C 69-383(ZR) (ex-)38TRS/26TRW USAFE AMARC FP659 @ Mojave 18JUL93

I took these photos at Mojave, in California, in July 1993.
This "ZR"-coded RF-4C was once operated by the 38th TRS/26th TRW (USAFE) based at Zweibrucken, Germany.
The 38th TRS inactivated in April 1991 and most of their RF-4Cs were transferred to AMARC in Arizona soon after that.
This RF-4C used to be a Boss Jet of the 38th TRS, and it was transferred from AMARC to Tracor Flight Syatems at Mojave to be converted to the QRF-4C.
I did not have a chance to photograph this RF-4C after it was converted to the QRF-4C.
Please note the AMARC # "FP659" retained on the rear fuselage aft of the US national insignia.
The squadron badge of the 38th was seen on the intake side as shown on the photo at left.

同隊はドイツのツバイブリュッケンに駐留していた偵察飛行隊ですが、1991年4月に解散となり、RF-4Cの大半はアリゾナ州のAMARCに保管されることとなりました。
本機はAMARCで"FP659"の管理番号（後部胴体に表示）を付けられましたが、QRF-4Cドローンに改造するため、請負会社（Tracor Flight Systems）の所在する
モハービ空港に持ち込まれました。上の写真はまだ改造作業に入る前にモハービで撮りました。
元38TRSの司令官機で、テールコードや部隊名（38TRS）は白のシャドー付きで尾翼に描かれています。
エアインテーク前端がスコードロンカラー（白字に緑のダイア）に塗られているのが目を引きました。
フィンキャップも同じ配色です。また、エアインテーク左側面にはロービジで38TRSのバッジが描かれています。
. QF-4E 73-167(TD) 82nd ATRS 53rd WEG @ Memphis 17SEP11

I took this photo at Memphis airshow in Tennessee in September 2011.
This QF-4E with tail code "TD" was operated by the 82nd Aerial Targets Squadron controlled under the 53rd Weapons Evaluation Group.
Most QF-4s were badly weathered, but this QF-4E looked so pretty and fresh.
Arrows on the photo point at the areas where the "QF"-modifications are externally visible on the photo, mostly antennas added for QF-conversion.
This is the only photo within the F-4 photo pages which I captured with my "digital" camera.

これは2011年の旧NAS.Memphis（テネシー州）でのエアショーに飛来した82nd Aerial Targets SquadronのQF-4Eです。
同隊は53rd Weapons Evaluation Groupの指揮下にあるため、尾翼には"53WEG"の部隊名が白いシャドー付きで表記されています。
恐らく53WEGの司令官機と思われます。ドローンであってもさすが隊長機はきれいに塗装されています。
エアインテークの左側面のバッジの中には、53WEGのエンブレム（中央）及び指揮下五個スコードロンの部隊バッジが散りばめてあります。
