North American (Mitsubishi) F/RF-86F Sabre
"Part ONE"

The JASDF received 180 F-86F Sabres from the US during 1955-57, and serialled them between 52-7401 and 72-7580, although the last 45 machines were never used (there were not enough qualified pilots) and were returned to the USA in February 1959. Mitsubishi built another 300 F-86Fs under licence between 1956 and 1961, with the serials between 62-7701 and 12-7000. The F-86F equipped ten fighter squadrons(1st to 10th), the ADC's Headquarters Sqdn. and the Blue Impulse aerobatic team, which was re-equipped with Mitsubishi T-2 during 1981-82. The last combat unit to fly the F-86F was the 6th Squadron, which was re-equipped with Mitsubishi F-1 in 1980. Many of the F-86Fs were returned to the US and they were converted to QF-86F for use by Pacific Missile Test Center (PMTC) and Naval Weapons Center (USNWC) as full scale aerial targets.

Mitsubishi converted eighteen F-86Fs to "RF-86F" configuration in 1961-62. These went to the 501st (Reconnaissance) Squadron, which used them until 25MAR77, and the last four machines were then transferred to the ADC's HQ Squadron, serving until October 1979. The third digit of the serial number changed from "7"(indicating a day jet fighter) to "6" (indicating a reconnaissance) as RF-86F. All of the Sabres were initially unpainted, but they were painted silver overall in the 1960's.

1st Squadron

1st Hikotai (Squadron) was formed on 10JAN56 at Hamamatsu within Kokudan (the Air Wing), with F-86F. The Kokudan became 1st Kokudan on 01OCT56. The 1st Hikotai was disbanded on 31MAR79. The 1st Hikotai was a fighter training squadron based at Hamamatsu together with its sister squadron of the 2nd Hikotai which was formed on 25AUG56 and disbanded on 20NOV65. The tail marking of these Hamamatsu-based squadrons under 1st Kokudan control was a black/yellow checker band.

JASDF's Hamamatsu Air Base was (still is) a home of the 1st Kokudan(Air Wing), which undertook advanced jet training with F-86F and T-33A in the early 70's. My first visit to Hamamatsu was in April 1971, and I photographed the F-86Fs and T-33As from the outside of the fences of the airfield with black & white films only. The above phtos are two of them. Some of the F-86Fs had colorful markings of RED nose, fuselage band and wing tips. Those colorful Sabres were flown as enemy aircraft during their ACM training.
F-86F #756 (bottom photo) was withdrawn from use in DEC77 and returned to the US. Converted to QF-86F on 07APR87 and delivered to Pacific Missile Test Center as full scale aerial target.

My second visit to Hamamatsu was on 18DEC75 with permission to photograph on the flight line. It was a perfect sunny day and I took a lot of photos on the flight line. Please note that each Sabre had a horizontal red stripe just above the yellow/black checker band on the fin. This RED strip represented the maintenance team colour within the 1st Air Wing, and I recognized YELLOW and GREEN stripes on other Sabres on the same day.(Please see the photos below) F-86Fs #755 (top)/#978 (3rd photo) depicted above were withdrawn from use in DEC78/AUG78 respectively and returned to the US. Converted to QF-86F on 16APR85/30SEP81respectively and used by PMTC(#33)/PMTC. Struck-Off dates were 17DEC86/01OCT83 respectively.

These F-86Fs had YELLOW stripes just above the checker band on the fin, which represented the maintenance team's color of these Sabres. During the 70's, most of the Sabres operated at Hamamatsu were equipped with the 120 GAL wing tanks, while most of the Sabres operated by combat squadrons were equipped with the 200 GAL wing tanks with no fins.

My third visit to Hamamatsu was made in August 1980. The Sabres of the 1st Sqdn. no longer carried colored stripes just above the checker band on the fin. T-33As seen in the backbround were operated by the 33rd Sqdn. under the 1st Air Wing. This #473 was a unique F-86F.....It was mothballed for storage on 18JAN67. Re-activated in 1978 with the fuselage of 02-7974, which was withdrawn from use on 07AUG78. This "combined" Sabre was withdrawn from use in NOV81. After that, it was returned to the US. Converted to QF-86F on 17FEB89 and delivered to PMTC. Its "struck-off" date was 20NOV89.

1st Air Wing Det. Matsushima

1st Kokudan Matsushima Hakentai or "1st Air Wing Det. The F-86Fs carried the unit badge on the wing tanks as shown on the above photos. The unit insignia was a black pegasus on a yellow disc outlined in red. The design of this unit insignia was basically the same as the 5th Sqdn's badge. The outline of the tail marking is basically the same as a tail-marking of the 4th Air Wing (based at Matsushima) at that time, but they used a black/yellow checker as a symbol of the 1st Air Wing. Some of their F-86Fs carried colorful red markings (nose, fuselage band and wing tips), which were mainly used as enemy a/c during the air combat training. F-86Fs #735 (top)/#838 (2nd photo) depicted above were withdrawn from use in NOV79/SEP80 respectively and returned to the US. Converted to QF-86F on 25OCT84/23SEP88 respectively and used by PMTC/PMTC(as #38). Struck-Off date of the #838 was 18MAY89.

3rd Squadron

3rd Sqdn was formed on 01OCT56 at Hamamatsu, within 2nd Air Wing, with F-86F. Moved to Chitose on 02SEP57. Transferred to 4th Air Wing at Matsushima on 05MAR63; to 81st Air Group at Hachinohe on 01FEB64. Moved to Misawa on 01DEC71; began re- equipment with Mitsubishi F-1 in September 1977 and reached its full complement of F-1 in March 1978. Transferred to the 3rd Air Wing at the same time at Misawa. The unit is re-equipped with Mitsubishi F-2 on 27MAR01. The 3rd Sqdn is still in active service.

6th Squadron

The 6th Sqdn was formed on 01AUG59 at Chitose, within 2nd Air Wing, with F-86F. Moved to Nyutabaru in OCT59. Transferred on 01APR60 to 5th Kokudan, which was formed at Matsushima on 01DEC59 and its HQ moved to Nyutabaru on 04JUL60. Transferred to Tsuiki Provisional Air Group on 26OCT64 - this became the 8th Air Wing on 28DEC64. Began re-equipment with Mitsubishi F-1 on 11MAR80 and the last two F-86Fs left the 6th Sqdn in November 1980. The 6th was re-equipped again with Mitsubishi F-2 during 2004-2006. My first visit to Tsuiki Air Base was made on 07MAR73. The weather was good as shown on the above photos. The 4th Sqdn (home based at Komatsu) was temporarily based at Tsuiki when I visited Tsuiki in March 1973, and you can find some F-86F/T-33A of the 4th in the back ground of the bottom (#977) photo. Unfortunately, I was not able to obtain permission to take photos of the 4th Sqdn's aircraft. Please see the top photo of #470. This #470 carried inboard pylons with AIM-9B/E sidewinder launchers. Also, this #470 carried 120 US Gal wing tanks, while most other F-86Fs at Tsuiki were equipped with larger 200 US Gal tanks. The #470 mentioned above was withdrawn from JASDF service in 1981 and returned to the US. Converted to QF-86F on 30NOV84 and used by PMTC. Struck-Off date was 30MAY85.

I visited Tsuiki twice in 1976, and the top photo (#791) was taken in August 1976. This #791 was withdrawn from service in the following year (NOV77) and the fuselage portion was re-used by combining it with the wing section of #62-7445, which had been mothballed for storage during 1966-1977. The NEW "combined" Sabre was reactivated on 03MAR78 with the serial of 62-7445, which was withdrawn from use on 16NOV81. The remainning three photos above were taken at Tsuiki airshow in November 1976. The triple "Nuts" (#000) on the bottom photo was the last production F-86F delivered from Mitsubishi to JASDF on 27FEB61. This #000 was withdrawn from JASDF service in DEC78 and returned to the US. Converted to QF-86F on 21OCT87 and it was operated by PMTC.

I returned to Tsuiki in December 1979 and I took the above photos at that time. By this time, most of the > F-86Fs had already been withdrawn from use, and the 6th Sqdn was operating the last surviving batch of the Japanese Sabres. F-86Fs #895 (upper)/#821 (lower) depicted above were withdrawn from use in DEC81/OCT80 respectively and returned to the US. Converted to QF-86F on 28SEP84/12APR84 respectively and used by PMTC(#39)/PMTC. Struck-Off dates were 16JUL85/25FEB85 respectively.

I took them at Komaki, the home of the 8th, in December 1975. Komaki Air Base is located near a big city of Nagoya, which is famous for Nagoya Castle constructed in the 17th Century. Nagoya Castle has a pair of famous golden "SHACHIHOKO" (an imaginary golden killer whale, something like a gargoyle) on the top of the gable, and the tail marking of the 8th Sqdn shown on the above photos is a stylized version of this gargoyle. #502 shown on the top photo was withdrawn from service in March 1976 and returned to the US. The new tail marking shown on the above photos was a new marking of the 3rd Air Wing. The larger part of the marking is a stylized "3" meaning the "3"rd Air Wing. The outline of the smaller part is a stylized representation of the outline of Aomori Prefecture where Misawa AB was located. This #882 was mothballed for storage on 01NOV65. Re-activated in 1978, when these photos were taken, with the fuselage of #82-7776. This #882/776-combined Sabre was withdrawn from use in December 1981.
