The basic design of the 10th Sqdn's tail marking is the same as the one of the 6th Sqdn's at that time. The only difference is the color of the fin band. The 10th had a BLUE band while the 6th had a RED one. All five photos above and at right were taken at Tsuiki in August 1976. You can see the tower and the base-op building in the back ground of the second photo from the top.

501th Squadron

501st Hikotai (Squadron) was formed on 01DEC61 at Matsushima, within Air Recon Group, with ten RF-86Fs. The last (18th) RF-86F was delivered to the 501st on 27MAR62. Moved to Iruma on 28AUG62. Received the first two RF-4EJs on 03DEC74 (flown from Hyakuri). HQ of the 501st moved to Hyakuri on 01OCT75, but formed a detachment at Iruma with the last six RF-86Fs. At that time, the 501st was equipped with 14 RF-4EJs, 6 RF-86Fs and 2 T-33As. The Iruma Det. was disbanded on 25MAR77 and the last surviving RF-86Fs were transferred to the ADC's HQ Sqdn at the same time. It meant that the RF-86F retired from tactical reconnaissance role of JASDF.

The RF-86F was an unarmed aircraft, but they "painted" false guns on the nose. The above three photos were taken at Iruma from the outside of the fences during 1970-1971. The top photo shows the F-86F on short final. The second photo shows a pair of RF-86Fs turning to the taxi way soon after landing. The bottom photo shows the RF-86F taxing to the runway for another mission.

I personally visited Iruma AB three times during 1972-1976 and I took the above photos at Iruma during that period. A lot of RF-86Fs had been withdrawn from service during 1972-1976 and the retired aircraft were observed outdoors at Iruma with all markings over-sprayed in silver to eliminate them. One example (#422) of them is seen in the background of the second photo from the top. Several RF-86Fs were passed to the US Navy to support QF-86F program for spares
reclamation.

The 501st Sqdn was once equipped with not only RF-86Fs but also a few F-86Fs at the same time, and the above photo shows an example of them seen on the flight line of the 501st Sqdn. This #455 was retired from JASDF service in NOV81 and returned to the US, and it was converted to QF-86F on 02NOV84. It was then operated by the PMTC as #31.

Air Defence Command's Headquarters Sqdn.

ADC's HQ Sqdn was formed on 01AUG58 at Iruma with F-86F and T-33A. Since then, the HQ Sqdn operated various types of aircraft including T-6G, T-34A, (E)C-46, YS-11E, B-65, T-4 and U-4. The last surviving JASDF F-86F (62-7497, HQ Sqdn.) made its final flight on 15MAR82 at Iruma, home of the HQ Sqdn.

#487 seen in the photo at left was the second last F-86F in JASDF servide and it was retired in FEB82. It was then returned to the US and was converted to QF-86F on 15MAR89 for use by USNWC as #814.

The tail marking of the HQ Sqdn was.......the red, yellow & blue symbolize the three Air Defence Forces - Northren, Central and Western - controlled under the HQ Air Defence Command. The above photos were taken at Irume located just outside of Tokyo, the home of the HQ Sqdn. Two of the above three F-86Fs were returned to the US and re-used as QF-86Fs. The #965/#782 were retired from JASDF service in AUG78/MAR80 and converted to QF-86F in FEB82/MAY81 in the US. They were then operated by PMTC & USNWC(#832)/PMTC(#332) & USNWC(#26) respectively. The struck-Off dates of them were 01MAR84/03FEB84 respectively.
965号機はPMTCとUSNWC(#832)、782号機はPMTC(#332)とUSNWC(#26)にて運用された後、 標的機として各々01MAR84/03FEB84に撃墜され失われました。

The HQ Sqdn's F-86Fs frequently visited various fighter bases all over Japan, and the above photos were taken at fighter bases controlled under the Air Defence Command.
*The #512 shown on the second photo from the top was flown by the Blue Impulse during 1964-66. Mothballed for storage on 18JAN67. Re-activated on 22SEP76 and the above photo was taken in NOV76. Then, the fuselage was replaced by that of the #996 and re-activated again in 1978. It was withdrawn from JASDF service in AUG79 and returned to the US. Converted to QF-86F on 11FEB86 and operated by USNWC(#880) and by PMTC.
*The #497 shown on the bottom photo was mothballed for storage on 25OCT66. The fuselage was replaced by that of #456 and re-activated on 01APR77. It was withdrawn from JASDF service in 15MAR82. This was the last surviving F-86F in the JASDF.

The Blue Impulse

The jet aerobatic team was formed at Hamamatsu within the 1st Air Wing with five F-86Fs on 01APR60. Nicknamed "Tenryu" or Flying Dragon in Setpember 1960. Renamed as "Blue Impulse" in early 1961. The F-86Fs were painted in the Blue Impulse 's early color-scheme in October 1961. The Team changed their color-scheme in 1964 as shown on the photos on this page. The first generation Blue Impulse with Sabres made its final aerobatic show at Iruma on 08FEB81 and all the F-86Fs were retired from service during 1981. The second generation Blue Impulse with Mitsubishi T-2s were formed at Matsushima within the 4th Air Wing on 12JAN82.

I took these photos at various airshows. Two of the above three F-86Fs were returned to the US for QF-86F after they retired from active service. They were as follows..... *The #927 shown on the top photo was withdrawn from JASDF service in MAR81 and it was returned to the US. Converted to QF-86F on 24JAN84 and operated by PMTC. Struck-Off date was 02AUG84. This #927 had been flown with B.I. during 1966-81. *The #709 shown on the second photo was withdrawn from JASDF service in MAR81 and it was returned to the US. Converted to QF-86F on 07FEB84 and operated by USNWC(#844). Struck-Off date was 06JUN85. This #709 had been flown with B.I. during 1976-81.

(above left) I photographed this F-86F(JASDF 92-7873, USAF 56-2875) at Tsuiki airshow on 09NOV80. This #873 had been flown by the Blue Impulse only for a few years during 1980-1981 and retired from service in April 1981. (above right) I photographed this QF-86F(56-2875) at Point Mugu airshow on 13OCT90. This was converted to QF-86F from the Blue Impulse F-86F #873 shown above on 18OCT89 . The Blue Impulse colors had been retained even after it was converted to QF-86F as shown at above right and it was operated by Pacific Missile Test Center (#30) at Pt.Mugu. Noticeable differences in appearance between F-86F and QF-86F were......QF-86F had (1) an antenna at the wing tip, (2) TV camera protruding from the intake lip, and (3) a new blast panels with no gun openings. This QF-86F (PMTC/#30) did not carry the JASDF-style 200 US Gal wing tanks.
