Above photos show a Topgun's F-5E in blue camouflage which I photographed at NAS Miramar in 1975.
Top photo shows the F-5E slowly taxing back to the flight line,
and the bottom photo was taken immediately after the top photo was taken with the ground crew seen near the right main gear under the wing.
When I visited NAS Miramar in August 1975, Topgun's aircraft did not carry "Russian-style" red nose number, nor red stars on the vertical tail.
Please note a Topgun's A-4E painted in the same blue camouglage seen in the background of the bottom photo.
Please note also that the top photo depicts the nose & main gear doors in closed position, while the botto photo shows all the gear doors in open position.

1975年8月にNAS.Miramarのフライトラインで撮影したトップガン（NFWS）のF-5Eです。
この当時、トップガンではT-38A、A-4E及びF-5Eを運用していました。
80年代以降アグレッサー機の定番となっている機首の大きな二桁機番は、当時はまだ付けられていませんでした。
また、尾翼のトップガンのバッジも付いていません。
最近のアグレッサー機に比べるとかなり地味な井出達でした。
尾翼の二桁機番はビュロー・ナンバーと相関は無く、０番台がF-5E、10番台がT-38A、20番台がA-4Eに与えられていました。
下段写真では右主脚脇にグラウンドクルーがもぐり込んでおり、また背景左奥に同じ青系の迷彩を施したA-4Eが写り込んでいます。
細かい話ですが、上段写真では前脚と主脚のドアカバーが閉じられていますが、その数十秒後に撮影した下段写真ではカバーが開いた（開く途中の）状態になっています。

Above three photos depict the same F-5E "Topgun #05" camouflaged in green/brown/sand which I photographed at NAS Miramar in 1975.
When I visited NAS.Miramar in August 1975, I recognized three camouflage schemes on the Topgun's F-5Es, and they were (1) three-tones of blue camouflage as shown on the top of this page,
(2) green/brown/sand camouflage as shown above, and (3) three-tones of grey camouflage as shown below.
The BuNo. appeared on the rear fuselage in small black numbers.

前出の青系迷彩機と同じ日に撮影した緑/茶/クリーム迷彩のTopgun"05"号機です。
この日、Topgunのフライトラインでは、前出の青系迷彩と、以下に紹介するグレー系迷彩を含め計三種類の迷彩塗装がF-5Eに施されていました。
最上段の写真はミッションを終えてTopgunのランプ近くに戻ってきた05号機ですが、グラウンドクルーが点検チェックを行っています。
中断写真は点検チェック後にフライトラインの自機のスポットに入ろうとする05号機です。
下段写真は同スポットに収まった後の05号機です。パイロットは既にいません。

Above photos show a Topgun's T-38A Talon "#12" in grey/blue splinter camouflage which I photographed at NAS Miramar in 1975.
The USAF serial number appeared on the rear fuselage side as "591604" in black small numbers.
The rectangular name plates on the cockpit side were gold, but no crew names were shown yet.

前出のトップガン機と同じ日に撮影したトップガンのT-38A,"12"号機です。
初めて見るこのスプリンター迷彩に感激し、益々テンションが上がってきたその興奮度を今でも良く覚えています。
同機は元々空軍機であり、後部胴体側面には小さな黒字で空軍シリアル"591604"がハイフン無しで書き込まれています。
良く見ると、上と下の写真で撮影時間がかなりズレています。太陽光線の当たり具合が違うし、また上段写真ではラダーが掛かっていないのに、下段写真ではラダーが掛かっています。
当日はエスコートの人（スライド交換仲間のVF-121パイロット）と一緒に５時間ぐらいミラマーのエプロンをアチコチ歩き回っていたので、この機体を数時間の差で二回撮影したようです。

These photos show an ex-USAF F-5E "741536" of VFA-127 displayed at Norton airshow held in March 1990.
VFA-127 was an adversary squadron bases at NAS.Fallon equipped with Northrop F-5E/F Tigers.
In mid-1992, the unit began to transition to the F/A-18A/B, becoming the first adversary squadron to operate the Hornet.
Please note the USAF serial # 741536 shown on the photo at left.

これら写真は1990年春の加州ノートンAFBのエアショーに展示されたVFA-127のF-5Eです。
アグレッサー機としては『お決まり』となった機首の大きな二桁ナンバーと尾翼の赤星が描かれています。
前出のトップガン（Naval Fighter Weapons School）をスタートとして、その後西海岸、東海岸共にアグレッサー飛行隊が編成されました。
その内の一つが写真のVFA-127です。同隊はこの時点ではF-5E/FをNAS.Fallonで運用していましたが、
1992年にはF/A-18A/Bを装備し、米海軍では初のホーネット仮想敵飛行隊とりました。
小写真の下の方にUSAFのシリアルナンバー"741536"が表記されています。

Above photo depicts a camouflaged F-5E of VFC-13 displayed at Dayton airshow in Ohio in 1997.
VFC-13 was established as Fleet Composite Sqdn Thirteen (VC-13) in 1973 at NAS New Orleans with F-8.
In 1974, they made the transition to A-4 Skyhawks, and the unit moved to NAS.Miramar in 1976.
In 1988, the unit was redesignated as VFC-13 and converted to F/A-18 during 1992-93.
The VFC-13 transferred to NAS Fallon in 1996 and also made the transition to F-5E.
Please note some "red" tapes which were put on some access panels on the fuselage to prevent visitors from openning the panels.

胴体側面の多くのアクセスパネルには赤いガムテープが貼られていますが、これは見学者にイタズラされないようにです。
VFC-13は当初VC-13としてF-8を装備し1973年にNAS New Orleansで編成されました。
翌1974年にはA-4に機種改変を行い、1976年にはNAS.Miramarへ移動しています。
1988年にVC-13はVFC-13と改称し、1992-93年にはF/A-18に機種改変しました。
上の写真を撮影した前の年の1996年に同隊はNAS Fallonへ移動して、F-5Eへ機種改変しました。

Above two photos show F-5"N"s of VFC-13 displayed at Millington (ex-NAS.Memphis) airshow in 2011.
The F-5Ns used to be operated by the Swiss Air Force as F-5E, so there are some noticeable differences (as pointed by red arrows on the top photo) in appearance between the F-5N and the
F-5E which was operated by the U.S.Navy during the 70's through the 90's. They include....(1) a chaff/flare dispenser under the fuselage,
(2) RWR(Radar Warning Receiver) antennas on the nose and the rear fuselage side, (3) no 20mm cannons on the "N", (4) air outlet on the rear canopy frame,
(5) square-shaped forward LERX and (6) some kind of antenna on the spine.

いずれも2011年のテネシー州Millington（元NAS.Memphis)エアショーに地上展示されたVFC-13のF-5Nです。
F-5NはF-5Eの機材不足（老朽化？）によりスイスから調達した元スイス空軍のF-5Eです。
よって、各種仕様上の相違から、F-5Nはそれまで米海軍で運用してきたF-5Eと外観上の相違点がいくつか認められます。
その相違箇所を上段写真の中で赤い矢印を使って示しましたが、（１）胴体下面のチャフ/フレアー・ディスペンサー、（２）機首と尾部のRHAWSアンテナ、（３）20mm機関砲の代わりのバラスト装備、
（４）キャノピー後部側面の空気出口、（５）より角ばったLERX、（６）胴体背部に装備された何やらのアンテナ、などです。プラモ作りでは注意が必要ですね。

Please note the two hangar buildings seen in the background of the above photo.
The left hangar (#2) used to be used by the Naval Fighter Weapons School, or "TOPGUN", during the 1970s.

ミラマー基地にあるトップガン格納庫の古今の姿を並べてみました。
上左は1975年8月に撮影したもので、上右はそれから36年経過した2011年に撮影しました。
格納庫の形は36年経過してもほとんど変わっていませんが、周りの雰囲気はだいぶ違ったように感じました。
上右の写真は2011年のミラマー・エアショーで撮影したものですが、この格納庫の前に立つと、まだ若かった36年前の感激がいきなり蘇ってきました。

A couple of Crusaders from VC-5 shown above landed at NAF.Atsugi on 02MAR70.
VC-5 was stationed at Naha, Okinawa at that time and they operated F/DF-8s and US-2Cs at the beginning of the 1970s.
The VC-5's last surviving Crusader (F-8K) was replaced with the newly introduced A-4E in 1971.
The unit moved from Naha to Kadena in 1975 and the unit was disbanded in 1992.
The vertical tail surfaces were painted in orange & yellow checker with the black tail code "UE" shadowed in white.
Please note the two blade antennas, seen behind the nose gear and behind the cockpit, were part of the drone control equipment for the DF-8F shown on the top photo.
Bottom photo shows the F-8"K", and you can easily compare the external differences between "DF-8F"(top) and "F-8K"(bottom).

02MAR70にペアで厚木に飛来したVC-5のDF-8F（上段写真）とF-8K（下段写真）です。
VC-5は日本のマニアの皆様には馴染みの深い飛行隊なので説明は割愛しますが、小生が上の写真を撮った翌年（1971）にはF-8がVC-5から去っていたようで、
この写真が小生にとって最初で最後の撮影チャンスでした。
上段写真に見られる二本のブレードアンテナ（前脚庫の直ぐ後ろ、及びキャノピーの後ろ）がドローン誘導用のもので、DF-8Fの特徴です。
上二枚の写真はほぼ同じ角度で真横から撮っているので、DF-8FとF-8Kの外観上の相違点（数箇所）が良く見て取れます。

USS.Oriskany opened to the public at Yokosuka naval port in October 1970, and I was able to photograph some F/RF-8s & A-7Bs on board.
The weather on the open day was very poor at the beginning, but fortunately we (all photographers) enjoyed some sunshine for a short period afterwards.
Both photos above show F-8Js of VF-194, and the lightning marking on the fin was red outlined in white.
The tail code "NM" and the modex # were black shadowed in white.

1970年10月に横須賀で一般公開されたUSS.Oriskany艦上で撮影したVF-194のF-8Jです。
この日は初め小雨もちらつくひどい曇天で家を出た時はかなり落ち込んでいたのですが、
何せ初めて乗る現役の米空母を目の前にしたら、急に気分はハイになりました。
艦上で撮影をしていたら、その内雲の切れ間から短時間ながら時たま直射日光が差し込んできて、更に気分は最高潮です。
コダクロームUで撮影していなかったことが唯一の後悔ですね。

Above photos show a RF-8G of VFP-63 aboard USS.Oriskany pictured in 1970.
Stripes on the fin and wing tips were dark blue with white stars.
Please note....(1) a green clover marking on the right jet intake side, and (2) Carrier name "USS.Oriskany" and "VFP-63" appeared on the "right"rear fuselage,
while no such markings appeared on the left side.

Top and middle photos depicts the F-8Js from VF-191, and the diamond marking on the rudder was red.
Fin marking (stripe) was also red with three white diamonds.
Please note on the middle photo that the "Tank Kill"(?) marking appeared on the nose.
Bottom photo shows the F-8J of VF-194.
The large red lightinig was piercing through the tail code of November Mike.
Please note the modex "203" on the nose shadowed in white.

14NOV72にたて続けに十数機のオリスカニー艦載機が降りて来ましたが、その内の三機の写真を上に貼り付けます。
一番注目したのは中断写真の機体（NM-103）です。
機首に戦車のシルエットが描かれていました。
これは戦車のキルマークなんですかねえ。
下段の写真はVF-194の機体ですが、尾翼の稲妻マークが前出の1970年の写真と比べるとかなり大きくなって、テールコードの真ん中を串刺しにしています。
VF-191もVF-194も尾翼マークは赤と白です。
因みに、機首のモデックスはVF-194のみ白の影付きとなっています。

Above photo show a F-8J of VF-191 (USS.Oriskany) which I photographed at NAS.Miramar in 1975.
This aircraft carried the most updated antenna/seeker-configuration for the F-8J as pointed by white arrows.
At first, a small antenna fairing was added on the jet intake side,
and secondly the infra-red seeker head in front of the wind-shield was removed,
and lastly a "football" shaped fairing immediately above the rudder was changed to the different (shortened) shape as shown on the photo above.
Unfortunately, this CAG aircraft did not carry any multi-colored markings.

1975年にミラマーで撮影したVF-191のダブルナッツ機です。残念ながらCAG機としての派手な特別マーキングは一切施されていませんでした。
本機はF-8Jの最終アンテナ（電装）仕様に改修されているようで（矢印を参照方）、インテーク側面に小さなアンテナフェアリングが追加されている他、
キャノピー直前の赤外線シーカーヘッドは取り外されています。
またラダーの上のフェアリングもそれまでのフットボール形状から、後端を切り落とされた様な形状に改修されています。

Above photos show F-8Js of VF-194 parked on the Miramar ramp in 1975.
These two F-8Js carried different antenna/seeker-configurations,
and the "NM-201" shown on the bottom photo was in the most updated antenna/seeker-configuration for the F-8J as explained before(above).
The Cannon muzzles on the forward fuselage side were painted in red.
Please note also the radome on both aircraft were painted in three colors, black (anti-glare), light gull grey and white underside.

これらも1975年にミラマーで撮影したオリスカニーのF-8J（VF-194）です。
大半のF-8Jは前出写真で説明した最終アンテナ（電装）仕様に改修されていましたが、上段写真に示す"NM-213"は従来仕様のままで、風防前の赤外線シーカーヘッドもまだ残っています。
下段写真の"NM-201"は既に最新（最終）仕様に改修されています。
いずれの機体もレドームは黒（反射避け）ライトガルグレー、白の三色に塗られています。
また、機関砲の砲口部（凹み部）は赤く塗られています。
上段写真に写るNM-213号機の胴体側面の国籍マークは、別機のパネルを付けているようで、マトモな国籍マークになっていません。

Please note the "white" radome on the top photo, whereas the "black" radome on the bottom photo.

これらは1975年にミラマーで撮影したVFP-63のF-8Jです。
同隊は各空母に写真偵察型RF-8Gを派遣している偵察飛行隊ですが、機種転換訓練用として戦闘機型のF-8Jも一緒に装備していました。
しかしこれら裏方仕事のF-8Jには、これら写真の通り外観がかなり汚れた（色褪せた）機体が含まれていました。
アンテナ仕様も最新仕様に改修されていません。
レドームの色もバラバラで白（上段写真）も黒（下段写真）も有ります。
色々な飛行隊からの寄せ集めなんですかねえ。
モデラー目線で気になるのは、下段写真の折り畳まれた左主翼の後ろ半分に見られる沢山の横筋です。これ何の汚れ（？）なんですかねえ。

This was the most interesting RF-8G on the flight line at Miramar.
Please note the tail code "??" or you can read it as "PP", the tail code for the VFP-63 squadron.
I presumed that this aircraft had not yet been assigned to any aircraft carriers and waited for the new assignment and the future tail code.
I liked this tail marking so much.

これは傑作マーキングです。
クエスチョン・マークが二つ並んでいますが、見ようによってはVFP-63のテールコードである"PP"にも見えるようにデザインされています。
恐らく次の空母派遣がまだ決まっていないので、『早く次の派遣先空母を決めてくれ！』って主張しているようです。
次の空母が決まった後に、テールコードがちゃんと書き直されたかどうかはわかりませんが。

いずれも1975年にミラマーで撮影した所属空母航空団のテールコードを付けたVFP-63/DETのF-8Jです。
上段写真はオリスカニーのDET4、下段写真はコーラルシーのDET5です。
何故かオリスカニーの機体はコダクロームで撮影するのを忘れており、白黒写真しかありません。
しかし、ラダーのクローバーは緑でした。
コーラルシーの機体（下）はかなり地味なマーキングですが、紺色に塗られたベントラル・フィンには白で刀が描かれています。
