JASDF Helicopters

Sikorsky S-62J

Nine S-62J rescue helicopters were delivered to the Air Rescue Group (later became Wing) between 1963 and 1967 in the standard yellow, green and red scheme. They were all licence-built by Mitsubishi and the last surviving S-62J was retired from service in early 1983.

Both photos show S-62Js of Air Rescue Training Squadron photographed at Komaki on 13AUG80. The unit was formed at Hamamatsu on 01OCT58, and it moved to Komaki on 01MAR71. All of the surviving S-62Js had been moved to the training squadron at Komaki by the time the above photos were taken in August 1980. They all were retired three years later (1983).

Kawasaki-Vertol KV-107

17 KV-107-II-5s (#801-#817) and 35 KV-107-IIA-5s (#818-#852) had been procured for JASDF use in the rescue and radar site logistic support roles. 17 machines of the early type (KV-107-II-5) had been delivered from Kawasaki to JASDF between 1967 and 1972, and afterwards, the other batch of 35 "re-engined" KV-107-IIA-5s were delivered during 1973-80. They had been operated by various Rescue Detachments at Chitose/Nyutabaru/Matsushima/Komatsu/Ashiya/Hyakuri/Niigata/Hamamatsu/Naha and Air Rescue Training Squadron at Komaki. The last surviving KV-107 (#844) made its last flight on 03NOV09.

Both photos show KV-107-II-5s of Air Rescue Wing Det. Matsushima. Top photo (#803), taken in 1975, shows the KV-107 in the early color scheme, and the nose of the stubwing pontoon tank was later painted in black as shown on the bottom photo taken in 1979. You can find a MU-2S of the same rescue unit in the background of the both photos. Matsushima Air Base suffered serious damage by Tsunami attacked on 11MAR11 and several UH-60Js of the rescue unit were badly damaged.

I took the above two photos at Iruma airshow in February 1981. The KV-107 #806 made a demonstration flight during the airshow. Iruma Air Base was opened to the public on that day because the "LAST" aerobatic show was made by the F-86F Blue Impulse at Iruma, which is the closest JASDF airbase from Tokyo.

The above photo shows a KV-107-IIA-5 #826 displayed at Komatsu airshow in July 1986. You can find a special marking on the nose and on the pontoon tank. They are famous cartoon charactor "Dorae-mon", which is VERY popular among all kids in Japan even today. The bottom photo shows a KV-107-IIA-5 #841 of the Air Rescue Training Squadron parked at Komaki Air Base in August 1994.

Boeing CH-47J

The CH-47J is the first "transport" helicopter operated by the JASDF. Kawasaki had delivered a total of 15 CH-47Js (#471-#486) to JASDF between 1986 and 1998, and additional 15 CH-47J(LR)s, which is a long-range version of the CH-47J, were delivered between 2002 and 2013 with the serials #487-#501. Air Rescue Wing had organized four Helicopter Transport Flight at Iruma, Misawa, Kasuga(Fukuoka) and Naha with CH-47J, which undertook radar site logistic support and other light transport roles. Many of the CH-47Js(#471-#486) have already beed retired from service.

(above photo) This is a CH-47J(LR) # 497 displayed at Hyakuri airshow in September 2013. Noticeable external differences between CH-47J and CH-47J(LR) are......(1) CH-47J(LR) carries larger pannier fairings along lower sides of the cabin to carry more fuel for longer range. (2) CH-47J(LR) is equipped with weather rader on the nose with black radome. (3) A pair of front main gears of the CH-47J(LR) are mounted a little forward position than that of the CH-47J.

Sikorsky UH-60J

The first UH-60J(s/n.18-4551) was built by Sikorsky and delivered to JASDF in 1991. The 2nd and 3rd machines (#552/553) were knock-down addembled by Mitsubishi in 1991. The remaining UH-60Js were all licence built by Mitsubishi, and the JASDF has ordered a total of 47 UH-60J rescue helicopters so far to replace the KV-107 in the rescue role. Color-scheme of the UH-60J was high-visibility yellow and white overall at the beginning. The color scheme changed to dark low-visibility paint scheme (two tones of dark blue overall) in 2005.
