JGSDF (Japanese Ground Self-Defence Force)

I'd like to briefly explain about the JGSDF color scheme and its markings during the 70's and 80's. The JGSDF was formed on 01JUL54, and at the beginning the JGSDF history, they operated various light liaison a/c such as Stinson L-5A/B/C/E/G, Piper L-21B, and Cessna L-19A together with Bell H-13E(Model 47D-1) helicopters. Standard color scheme of the JGSDF a/c was gloss olive-drab overall with white markings. During 1986-1987 JGSDF changed their standard color scheme from gloss olive-drab overall to mat green/brown/black camouflage with black markings. This camouflage scheme is still retained on the current JGSDF a/c.

JGSDF a/c carried aviation unit codes on the fuselage in white on olive-drab fuselage or in black on camouflaged fuselage. "Numbered" squadrons are identified by Roman numerals and "Named" squadrons by up to four letters. These unit codes appear on the forward fuselage, usually near the flight deck windows. The following codes were used during the 70's and 80's.

I to XIII.....1st to 13th Aviation Squadrons
E.....Eastern Army Aviation Squadron
EH.....Eastern Army Helicopter Squadron
M.....Central Army Aviation Squadron
MH.....Central Army Helicopter Squadron
NE.....Northeastern Army Aviation Squadron
NEH.....Northeastern Army Helicopter Squadron
N.....Northern Army Aviation Squadron
NH.....Northern Army Helicopter Squadron
W.....Western Army Aviation Squadron
WH.....Western Army Helicopter Squadron
S.....Aviation School
SI.....Aviation School Det.Iwanuma
SK.....Aviation School Det.Kasumigaura
SU.....Aviation School Det.Utsunomiya
SD.....Air Training Support Squadron
IB.....101st Aviation Squadron
IH.....1st Helicopter Group
IIH.....2nd Helicopter Group
IHB.....1st Helicopter Brigade HQ Flight
IATH.....1st Anti-Tank Helicopter Squadron
IIATH.....2nd Anti-Tank Helicopter Squadron

The US Army supplied a total of 62 L-21Bs to the Hoantai (or National Safety Force) during 1953, all of which went to the JGSDF on 01JUL54 when the Hoantai was reorganized as JGSDF. The L-21B carried JGSDF serials 12001-12062. The type was retired from service late in 1965. Color scheme was olive-drab overall or yellow overall. The above photo shows yellow L-21B which was preserved at Kisarazu after retirement. The picture was taken sometime in 1972.

Kawasaki KAL-2

KAL-2
20001
@ Kisarazu
1972

Kawasaki developed KAL-2 as light liaison and training a/c for JSDF and two prototypes were built in 1954. The first one was delivered to JMSDF(s/n.9001) and the second one was delivered to JASDF (40-1555), which was then transferred to the JGSDF as 20001 in 1964. It was eventually withdrawn from use and preserved at Kisarazu. The above photo was taken at Kisarazu sometime in 1972, and the color scheme was olive-drab overall. This a/c is currently preserved and displayed at Tokorozawa Aviation Museum. The photo at left was taken at Tokorozawa Museum in 2012. Unfortunately, the KAL-2 was not selected by JSDF as their standard liaison and training a/c, and the winner Fuji LM-1 (KM-2 for JMSDF) became the standard light liaision a/c for JGSDF service.

The first ten L-19As were delivered to the Hoantai (or National Safety Force) in June 1954. Weeks later, the Hoantai became the JGSDF, and subsequent deliveries totalled 107 aircraft till 31MAR55, which were serialled 11001 to 11107. Additionally, Fuji built 14 updated machines, designated "L-19E-1" and serialled 11201 to 11214, in 1957-58, which were followed in 1959-60 by eight "L-19E-2" instrument trainers serialled 11361-11368. Most of the L-19s had been retired from service during 1977-81 and replaced by OH-6J/D helicopters. Standard color scheme was gloss olive-drab overall with white markings. The top photo shows two L-19s of 12th Aviation Sqdn coded "XII", of which the JG-1362 in the background is "L-19E-2". The photo immediate above shows "L-19A" JG-1094 coded IX (9th Avn.Sqdn.) displayed at Misawa airshow on 15SEP77.

In 1981, JGSDF purchased two Fuji KM-2s assembled for JMSDF, and they were designated as TL-1 with serials 81001 & 81002. JGSDF used these two TL-1s for flying training of fixed-wing pilots at Aviation School Det.Utsunomiya. LM-2 was equipped with the same engine as KM-2's, so the TL-1 is almost the same aircraft as the LM-2. These two TL-1s were transferred to JMSDF as KM-2 at the beginning of the 1990's.
