Sixteen Lockeed-built P2V-7 Neptunes were delivered to the JMSDF between 1956 and 1958 (serials 4601/4616),
and were followed by an additional 48 machines built by Kawasaki (serials 4617/4664), and taken on charge between 1959 and 1965.
There were five Kokutais(Air Sqdns) operating the P2V-7; the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 203rd, the latter being a training squadron;
and the type was also used for a time by the 51st and 205th(Training) Kokutais.
The P2V-7 was gradually replaced by the P-2J, the last examples in service was withdrawn from use in the early 1980s.
Although the first eight P2V-7s were delivered unpainted, the type's standard color-scheme was overall dark grey,
the fuselage top being painted in white from the late 1960s.

小生が本格的に飛行機写真を写し始めた時には、既に多くのP2V-7はリタイアしていたため、
残念ながらあまり多くの写真を撮ってはいません。

These photos show a P2V-7 #4624 of the 3rd Kokutai(Air Sqdn) which I photographed at Kanoya Air Station in March 1973.
The 3rd Kokutai was formed at Shimofusa with P2V-7 under Fleet Air Wing FOUR on 01SEP62.
The unit moved from Shimofusa to Atsugi on 25DEC73 and the squadron was re-equipped with P-2J during 1975-1976.
The 3rd Kokutai is currently flying P-3Cs.

これらの写真は1973年3月に鹿屋基地を初めて訪問した時に撮影しました。
列線に厚木から飛来していた第三航空隊のP2V-7がたまたま並んでいました。
上段の写真ではプロペラが回っていますが、この時の状況はもうよく覚えていません。
同隊は1975〜76年ころにP2V-7からP-2Jに機種改変となりました。

I visited Hachinohe Air Station (near Misawa Air Base) for the first time in October 1972 and I took the above P2V-7 photos of the 4th Kokutai at that time.
JMSDF operated one P2V-7 squadron, the 4th Kokutai, and one P-2J squadron, the 2nd Kokutai, at Hachinohe when I visited the Air Station in 1972.
The 4th Kokutai was formed at Hachinohe on 31MAR63 with P2V-7, and the unit was re-equipped with the P-2J during 1978-1980.
The 4th Kokutai is currently operating P-3Cs at Hachinohe.
They started carrying their tail marking on the fin during 1971.
The marking was consisted of a yellow "4", representing the 4th Kokutai, and a white eagle came from the unit badge of the 4th.

1972年10月に小生は初めて八戸基地を訪問しました。上の写真はその時に撮った第四航空隊のP2V-7で、八戸には第四航空隊以外にも、一足先にP-2Jに機種改変した第二航空隊と、
八戸救難隊のS-62Jが運用されていました。
この日は素晴らしい快晴でしたが、撮影には制限が有り、残念ながら列線の近くでの標準レンズを使った撮影は出来ませんでした。
それでも、1971年頃から尾翼に描き始めた同隊の飛行隊マークは大好きです。この時の八戸訪問を思い出しながら、是非第四航空隊のP2V-7（1/72、ハセガワ）を作りたいです。

Above photo shows a P2V-7 #4626 of the 203rd Air Training Squadron parked at Kanoya Air Station in March 1973.
Please note the dayglo orange wing-tip tank seen on the picture.
Neptune training squadrons normally painted the wing-tip tanks on their aircraft in dayglo orange simply to improve visibility.
The 203rd was formed at Kanoya on 01SEP61 with P2V-7, and the unit was disbanded on 16FEB74.

1973年3月に鹿屋で撮影した第203教育航空隊所属のP2V-7です。
同隊は新編された01SEP61から解隊された16FEB74までの約12年半の間、ずっと鹿屋においてP2V-7の乗員訓練を担っていました。
1974年2月にはP2V-7の退役に伴って同隊は一旦解散となりましたが、P-2Jの乗員訓練のため11APR74に鹿屋で再編されています。
教育航空隊のP2V-7は視認性の向上のため翼端タンクをデイグロ・オレンジに塗っていました。

Above photos show a couple of P2V-7s of the 51st Kokutai (Air Sqdn) which I photographed at Shimofusa airshow in May 1977.
The 51st has undertaken operational test and evaluation duties from it foundation in 1961 up until today,
and so they operated most of the JMSDF aircraft types including helicopter types.
The unit marking of the 51st is a combination of the orange "V" and the yellow "X", so this can be read "VX" together.
The 51st Kokutai is a test unit and a test unit is designated as "VX-" in the U.S.Navy.

いずれも1977年の下総航空祭で写した第51航空隊のP2V-7です。
この当時は航空祭でも入場者が少なくて、早く入れば適当に歩き回って、展示機ではないこれらの機体でもこんな風に撮れました。
一般公開エリアがロープで設定されてからゆっくり公開エリアに戻っていました。
下段写真の左奥に一般公開エリアと入場者が写っています。
1977年にもなるとほとんどのP2V-7は用途廃止になり、P2V-7が残っているのは第四航空隊と第51航空隊だけでした。

P2V-7 #4655 was converted to a Variable Stability Test aircraft (VSA) at the end of 1977 and made its first flight as a VSA aircraft on 23DEC77.
The aircraft was delivered on 15MAR78 to the 51st Kokutai at Shimofusa in a special paint scheme as shown on the above photos.
Please note that the large radome under the forward fuselage was removed.
Please note also the speed brake (a plate with round holes) under the bomb-bay as seen on the top photo.

いずれも1978年の下総航空祭で写した第51航空隊のP2V-7, VSA実験機です。
最上段の写真は左エンジンを始動した瞬間ですが、開いた爆弾槽ドアの内側に本機の特徴の一つであるエア・ブレーキが見えます。
前部胴体下の大きなレドームが取り外されており、一般のネプチューンよりはかなり印象が異なります。
この日の航空祭は天気も良く、このVSA機をしっかり撮影することができました。
