The first three P-3C Orions (#5001-5003) were built by Lockheed and they were flown to Japan(Atsugi) on 25DEC81.
These three were the only JMSDF Orions which carried the USN's BuNo. on the rear fuselage side immediately below the horizontal tailplane.
The following five machines were knock-down assembled by Kawasaki and they all were delivered to the JMSDF in 1982 with the serials #5004-5008.
Kawasaki built another 93 P-3C Orions under licence with the serials #5009-5101. So, JMSDF received a total of 101 P-3C Orions in total.
The P-3C Orion equipped a total of nine ASW squadrons (1st-9th Kokutais) and one P-3C training squadrons (206th Kyouiku-Kokutai, later re-numbered as 203rd).
Five machines out of 101 Orions were later converted to the "OP-3C" maritime reconnaissance aircraft with SLAR & LOROP and
these five machines were re-numbered as #9131-9135.
These OP-3Cs have been operated by the 81st Kokutai at Iwakuni.
Apart from the above mentioned P-3C ASW aircraft, the JMSDF received a total of five EP-3 electronic reconnaissance aircraft (serials; #9171-9175) during 1990-1998,
a total of three UP-3D ECM training & support aircraft (serials; #9161-9163) during 1997-1999, and one UP-3C test aircraft (serial #9151) in 1994.
Unfortunately, I do not have any photos of these EP-3/UP-3C/UP-3D.
日本のマニアの皆様にとってはお馴染みのP-3オライオンですので、日本語での解説文は割愛させていただきます。
小生は1990年以降あまり（ほとんど）日本で撮影する機会が無かったため、派生型であるOP-3C/EP-3/UP-3C/UP-3Dの写真は残念ながら撮っておりません。

The 1st Kokutai operated P-2J Turbo-Neptune at Kanoya during 1971-1989,
and the unit was re-equipped with the P-3C in 1989, and they are still flying P-3C Orion based at Kanoya Air Station.
The orange figure of the tail(unit) marking represents the Sakura-Jima, an active volcanic Island located near Kanoya Air Station, the home of the 1st Kokutai.
The dark green portion of the tail marking represents the smoke and the lava from the volcano.
I took these photos during the Kanoya airshow held on 14MAY95.

これらの写真は1995年の鹿屋航空祭で撮影しました。小生にとって現在（2015年）に至るまで最後の鹿屋訪問でした。
第一航空隊は発足（前身の第一飛行隊は1956年）から1989年に至るまで、鹿屋で当初はP2V-7、その後P-2Jを運用していましたが、
その間は部隊（尾翼）マークを描いていませんでした。
1989年にP-3Cへ機種改変した後に、同部隊として初めて桜島（オレンジ）と噴煙（暗緑色）をモチーフとした尾翼マーキングを描きました。

I took the above two photos during the Hachinohe airshow held on 10MAY87, when the FAW.2 at Hachinohe operated not only P-3Cs but also P-2Js,
and you can find a search light(wing tip) of the P-2J on the photo at bottom.

これらの写真は1987年の八戸航空祭で撮影しました。当時第二航空隊はP-2JからP-3Cへの機種改変が終わっていた（もしくは終わろうとしていた）時期だったと思います。
相棒の第四航空隊はちょうど機種改変の真っ只中で、P-2JとP-3Cの両機種を見ることができました。因みに、下段写真の右端には第四航空隊のP-2Jの翼端が写り込んでいます。
因みに、第二航空隊は最初のP-3Cを20JUL85に受領しているようです。

The 3rd Kokutai began receiving P-3Cs on 10MAY84, and the unit is still flying P-3C Orion based at Atsugi Air Station under the control of the Fleet Air Wing FOUR.
I took the top two photos at Atsugi when I visited the FAW.4 in November 1985.
Please note....(1) the bomb bay doors are in open position on both aircraft, and (2) the US.Navy's UC-12B of "Atsugi Base Flight" is seen on the background of the middle photo.
I took the bottom photo at Iruma AB in November 1985.
The aircraft was taxing down to the runway to dispatch for Atsugi soon after the Iruma airshow was over.
The orange figure stylizes a letter "A" and the green one stylizes a letter "T", and these two letters are the first two letters of ATsugi where the 3rd Kokutai is homebased.
The orange/white figure also represents the shape of a snow-capped Mount FUJI as Atsugi Air Station is located fairly close to the Mt.Fuji.
Three blue parallel stripes (outlined in yellow) represent the "3"rd Kokutai.

その翌年にイギリス人取材クルーに紛れ込んで厚木基地へ入れてもらった機会に、上段と中段の写真を撮りました。
中段写真の背景には米海軍厚木ベースフライトのUC-12Bが写り込んでいます。
下段の写真は入間航空祭での地上展示を終えて、厚木に戻るため滑走路へタキシングする同隊のP-3Cです。

The 4th Kokutai began receiving P-3Cs at Hachinohe on 15AUG86, and the unit was re-organized and merged into their sister squadron, the 2nd Kokutai, on 26MAR08.
I took the top photo at Hachinohe airshow in May 1987, and the bottom photo at Misawa airshow in September 1987.
Regarding the tail marking, the yellow figure is a stylized "4" representing the "4"th Kokutai.
The black Eagle surrounding the "4" came from the squadron badge of the 4th Kokutai.

第四航空隊は最初のP-3Cを15AUG86に受領しているようです。
同隊は長年第二航空隊とペアで八戸の第二航空群の中核を構成していましたが、26MAR08に体制移行による部隊改変で第二航空隊に統合され、解隊されました。
上段の写真は1987年の八戸航空祭で撮影しました。
下段の写真は同年の三沢航空祭に地上展示された機体です。
尾翼の部隊マークは基本的にP2V-7時代のマークをそのまま（色は一部変更）引き継いでいます。

The 6th Kokutai was newly formed at Atsugi under the Fleet Air Wing FOUR on 30MAR83 with six P-3Cs at the beginning.
The 6th was the first Orion squadron in the JMSDF.
Top photo was taken at Tsuiki airshow in November 1983, and there was only one Orion squadron at that time.
The tail marking was so colorful and attractive and
all our aviation enthusiasts in Japan were expecting forthcoming new tail markings on the P-3C when more and more P-3Cs became introduced into the VP- squadrons.
The 2nd and the 3rd photos above were taken at Atsugi in November 1985, by that time the sister squadron of the 6th, the 3rd Kokutai, was also equipped with the P-3C already.
A photo at left shows a tail marking of the 6th Kokutai.
This marking stylizes the shape of the "ORION" because the 6th was the first Orion squadron in the JMSDF service.
The unit was re-organized and merged into their sister squadron, the 3rd Kokutai, on 26MAR08.

第六航空隊は海自へのP-3C導入に伴い厚木基地で30MAR83に新たに編成されました。
その尾翼マークは素晴らしいデザインと配色で、大好きなマーキングでした。
当時は写真マニアだった小生は、近い将来P-3Cが他の多くの航空隊に配備され、新しいデザインの尾翼マークが次から次へと出現するのを心待ちにしていました。
最上段の写真は、第六航空隊が新編されて約半年が経過した83年11月の築城航空祭で展示された機体です。
当時な同隊が唯一のオライオン飛行隊ですから、遠路はるばる厚木から参加して、とにかく輝いて見えました。
２･３枚目の写真は1985年11月に厚木のフライトラインで撮影しました。
遠方にはVP-50のP-3Cが写り込んでいますが、小生の手元にそのスライドが残っていません。
良く覚えていませんが、撮影許可が降りなかったんだと思います。同隊は26MAR08に体制移行による部隊改変で第三航空隊に統合され、解隊されました。

The 7th Kokutai was the last surviving P-2J squadron in the JMSDF, and the unit began re-equipment with P-3C at Kanoya on 29JUL91.
Above three photos were taken at Kanoya airshow in May 1995, and at that time there were two P-3C squadrons, the 1st and the 7th, based at Kanoya Air Station.
The tail marking of the 7th Kokutai was a Greek letter "OMEGA" in blue since it was a call-sign of the squadron,
together with yellow seven stars in the shape of the "Big Dipper" or the "Plough".
These seven stars represent the "7th" Kokutai.
The unit was re-organized and merged into their sister squadron, the 1st Kokutai, on 26MAR08.

第七航空隊は海自で最後まで残ったP-2J飛行隊でしたが、29JUL91から同隊にP-3Cの配備が開始されました。
その尾翼マークはP-2J時代のもの（コールサインであるギリシャ文字のオメガと北斗七星）を引き継いだものになりました。
上３枚いずれの写真も1995年の鹿屋航空祭で撮影しました。
中段の写真は展示飛行に向かう同隊のP-3C、そして最下段の写真は展示機の列線に並べられたP-3Cで、隣にT-4が展示されていました。

This is the first P-3C (s/n.5001) delivered to the JMSDF, and I took this photo at Atsugi airshow in May 1982.
The first three P-3C Orions (#5001-5003) were built by Lockheed and they were flown to Japan(Atsugi) on 25DEC81.
So I took this photo only six months after the aircraft was flown to Japan.
As you can see from the above photo, this aircraft carried the USN's BuNo.(161267) on the rear fuselage side immediately below the horizontal tailplane.
Please note that the style of the serial number shown on the fin is different from the ones appeared on the Kawasaki-built P-3Cs.
I mean.....this s/n."5001" was painted in much skinny(slimmer) fashion compared with the ones painted on the Kawasaki-built P-3Cs.

この写真は1982年5月の厚木公開日に撮影した海自オライオンの一号機です。
本機はロッキード社で製造されて1981年のクリスマスの日に日本（厚木）へ空輸されてきたので、
恐らくこの写真は日本で一般公開された最初のP-3Cだったと思います。
ロッキード製の最初の３機にはBuNo.が書き込まれており、本機にも"161267"が読み取れます。
尾翼の機番は海自機の通常の字体とは違って、かなり細い字体で5001が書かれています。
これはロッキード社に海自機の字体が理解されていなかったからでしょうか？

The 206th Kyouiku-Kokutai(Air Training Sqdn) was formed at Shimofusa on 01DEC87 to undertake crew-training of the Orion.
The above photo was taken on Shimofusa airshow in May 1989, and as you can see, the aircraft carried the USN's BuNo (161269) on the rear fuselage side.
As mentioned above, the first three P-3Cs(#5001-5003) were Lockeed-built machines and they only carried the USN's BuNos.
All P-3Cs in the training squadron have/had day-glo orange wing tips for anti-collision purposes.
On 24MAR97, the 206th was re-numbered as the "203rd" Kyouiku-Kokutai.

The 203rd Kyouiku-Kokutai(Air Training Sqdn) is the only training squaddron for the JMSDF's P-3C crew.
The above photo was taken on Shimofusa airshow in September 2013.
JMSDF began removing unit markings from the vertical fin on all aircraft in 2002,
and they changed the color scheme of the P-3C to overall grey scheme during the same time period.
Japanese Orions used to carry colorful and photogenic tail markings on all aircraft, however all JMSDF P-3Cs are currently grey overall with no tail markings,
which discouraged Japanese photographers so much.

これらの写真は比較的最近（2013年）の下総公開日に撮影しました。
勿論デジタルです。
2012年にリタイアしてからはめっきり現用機に興味が無くなり、カメラを持って飛行場や航空祭へ行く機会がガックリと減りました。
この日下総（と言うか海自基地）に出掛けたのは20年振り近かったです。
かつて魅力的な部隊マークを付けていたP-3Cはグレー一色となり、更に悪いことに部隊マークは消されていて、益々現用機の写真撮影に興味を失いました。
今は完全にプラモ一辺倒です。
