These two black & white photos show P-3B "154584" of VP-1 "Screaming Eagles" which I photographed in Japan (Atsugi & Yokota) in 1970.
Modex number of this aircraft changed from "8"(top photo) to "10"(bottom photo) during 1970.
Fin cap was painted in dark blue with yellow eagle on the blue base.
A couple of B-727s in natural metal finish seen in the background of the bottom photo were operated by "Southern Air Transport", which were frequent visitors to Yokota at that time.

フィンキャップは確か紺に塗られておりイーグルのマークは黄色だったと思います。
下段写真の遠影に写っている二機の無塗装のB-727は、当時よく横田で見かけた"Southern Air Transport"の機体です。

1985年の三沢航空祭に展示されたVP-1 "Screaming Eagles"のP-3Cです。
同隊は前年の1984年にP-3BからP-3Cにアップグレードされました。
前出の1970年当時のマーキングからはかなり変化しています。
テールコード"YB"とモデックスの"5"には白のシャドーが入っています。
また、垂直尾翼前方にはNAS.Barbars Point（ハワイ）のシンボルである虹のマークが見られます。
因みに、昨年（2013年）夏にバーバースポイントの航空博物館に行ってみましたが、USCGのC-130が飛んでいました。
しかし、かつてのNASには現役の米海軍機は全く見られず寂しい限り。エプロンには博物館所蔵のUSN/USMC機が並んでいました。

機首のモデックス番号に引っ掛けて描かれた黄色と赤の稲妻マークが特徴的でした。
中段写真の"PE-2"の右側遠影に見える大きな建物は、モフェットのシンボルとなっている飛行船用巨大格納庫です。
当時はこの格納庫がP-3用に使われており、中には沢山のP-3が並んでいましたが、機体の上には巨大な空間が広がっていました。
この格納庫は昨年（2013年）見た時もまだ残っていました。

VP-31 was the West Coast Orion FRS squadron stationed at NAS.Moffett Field, CA.
Top photo shows a P-3B 152720 "RP-28" parked on the VP-31's flight line at Moffett.
Bottom photo shows another Orion "PR-4" of VP-31 taxing through the washing area at Moffett.
You can find another Orion in the background at right, which was taxing to the washing area followed after "PR-4".
The horizontal wide stripe in white was the squadron's tail marking(?) at that time.
The unit was disbanded in 1993.

VP-31は西海岸におけるオライオン訓練部隊で、シリコンバレーに近い加州NAS.Moffett Fieldがホームベースでした。
これといった色付きの飛行隊マーキングを付けていませんでしたが、テールコードの高さに描かれた白い横帯が同隊の目印でした。
モデラー的にはあまり興味の湧かない飛行隊です。上段写真はモフェットのフライトラインに並ぶ同隊のP-3B "RP-28"です。
この部隊のみモフェットの西側ランプを使っており、所属機も一般のVP-飛行隊よりかなり沢山の機数が並んでいました。
下段写真はモフェットの機体洗浄施設内をタキシングする同隊の"RP-4"です。この写真の右端には機体洗浄機に向けてタキシングする次のオライオンが写っています。
因みに、VP-31は1993年に解散しています。

Please note also that all flight control surfaces of the P-3C "QE-2"(a photo immediately above) are positioned at "off-neutral" including
aileron(down), flap(lowered), elevator(down) and rudder(left).
This is my favourite fashion as I built my NC-121K(1/72) model lately.
Notice several access panels under the wing are in open position as shown on the photo("QE-2") immediately above.

小写真（左）は機首に貼られた同隊のインシグニアですが、一部が浮き上がってヒビ割れ状態です。
ここでモデラー目線になって中段写真の"QE-2"に注目ください。ほとんどの動翼が中立位置からずれた位置で駐機しているんです。
左エルロンは少し下がっており、フラップも下がっています。ラダーは左に向き、昇降舵は下がって、トリムタブは更に下がっています。
小生はプラモを作る時に動翼を中立位置からズラして固定するのが好きなんですが（NC-121K 1/72がその一例）、実際にもこの写真の通り動翼が全てズレているケースが見られます。
しかも、この機体は主翼下面の数枚のアクセスパネルまで開いています。P-3のプラモはこんな形で作ろうかな。

I was so happy to see the colorful "Pelicans" marking (a photo at left) on the tail even though the aircraft was painted overall low-bisibility gray.
The last three digits of the Bureau number are shown on the nose, however its complete Bu.No. was not shown anywhere.

当時小生が住んでいたアパートから車でわすか15分のスマーナ空港で1998年に撮影したVP-45 "Pelicans"のP-3Cです。
この日は当地でのエアショーに参加するため、フロリダ州ジャクソンビルからテネシー州スマーナに飛来しました。
モデラー的には全く興味の湧かないロービジ機ですが、近付いてみると何と色付きのペリカン･マークが復活しており、すごく喜んだ記憶があります。

These photos show P-3Cs of VP-47 "Golden Swordsmen" which I photographed at Misawa(top) and Chitose(bottom) airshows in 1977 and in 1982 respectively.
Both aircraft carried attractive marking of stars and stripes on the nose.
Both aircraft also carried tail code "RD", "VP-47" below NAVY and modex/nose # painted in black "shadowed" with white.
There are some small differences on tail markings between these two aircraft.
The fin cap of "RD-3"(top photo) is gold outlined with black with its modex # "3" in black on the gold fin cap.
Squadron insignia on the tail of "RD-5"(bottom photo) carries black ribbon immediately below the insignia.
Please note the T-33A of JASDF 35th Sqdn seen in the background of the top photo.

5年間の撮影時差が有りますが、機首に描かれた星条旗のマークは変わりません。
しかし尾翼のマーキングは少し変わったようです。

そして写真では見づらいですが、モデックスの"3"が黒でフィンキャップにも描かれています。
また、"RD-5"（下段写真）では尾翼の飛行隊インシグニアの下にリボンが入っています。
いずれの機体も"VP-47"（NAVYの下）の黒文字に白のシャドーが入っています。
因みに、上段写真の背景に第35飛行隊のT-33Aが写り込んでいます。

Squadron nickname was "Blue Dragons", but the dragon marking on the tail was painted in green (not blue) and they carried blue stripes outlined in black(?) on the tail.
Please note the difference in colors painted on the forward upper surfaces of the lowered flaps pictured on the middle(light gray) and the bottom(red) photos.
Please note also that the national insignia on the fuselage side is outlined in white on "SG-4"(bottom photo),
while the one on "SG-10"(middle photo) does NOT have white outline around the national insignia.
VP-50 was disestablished in June 1992.

ブルードラゴンズとは言っても尾翼に描かれたドラゴンは青ではなく緑ですが。
モデラーの皆さんは既にお気付きかも知れませんが、オライオンのフラップ上面（上げた時に隠れる部分）は必ずしも赤に塗られている訳ではありません。
中段写真の"SG-10"は機体色と同じグレーのままで、下段写真の"SG-4"は赤に塗られています。
モデラー的には勿論赤に塗りたいところですが、グレーのままの機体も沢山います。
更にやっかいな事に、国籍マークの周りに白の縁取りが有る機体（下段写真）と縁取りが無い機体（中段写真）の違いもあります。
場合によっては、縁取りの有る機体がフラップ上面を赤く塗っているのかも知れません。
モデラー目線で更に細かい事を言えば、NAVYの位置が中段写真の"SG-10"と下段写真の"SG-4"では異なります。
下段写真の"SG-4"ではNAVYの文字がかなり後ろに下がっています。この違いは、どうやら国籍マークの白縁の有無とリンクしているように思います。
（誰か詳細をご存知ですか？）いずれにしても、
うるさいモデラーの方はちゃんと写真で確認してから塗装仕様を決めないとなりませんね。因みに、同隊は1992年6月に解散しています。

These photos show a P-3C of VP-64 "Condors" (US Navy Reserve) which was displayed at Dobbins airshow held in June 1997.
Its nose number "Double-0-Seven" was really eye-catching for older generation.
Please note that the stylized "VP64" is hidden in the tail marking as shown at left.
The squadron was redesignated Fleet Logistics Support Squadron VR-64 with C-130 in September 2004 and they currently carry their new tail code "BD" on their C-130s.

面白味の無いロービジ塗装ですが、機首の"Double-0-Seven"はオジサン世代には印象的です。
尾翼の飛行隊マークの中にVP64の文字が織り込まれています。
この辺のデザイン･センスは昔の自衛隊マーキングと似ていますね。
因みに、VP-64は2004年9月に改編されて、C-130を装備するFleet Logistics Support Squadron VR-64になりました。
日本にも"BD"のテールコードを付けて飛んでくるようですね。

The squadron was established at NAS.Moffett Field with P-3A in 1970 and the unit upgraded to the P-3B in 1986 and to the P-3C in 1991.
VP-91 was disbanded at NAS.Moffett Field in March 1999. The unit was based at Moffett Field during its entire life.
The squadron's nicknames were the "Pink Panther" during 1970-1984, the "Stingers" during 1984-1991, and the "Black Cats" during 1991-1999.

These photos show a P-3C of VP-94 "Crawfishers"(US Navy Reserve) which was displayed at New Orleans airshow in November 1996.
The tail marking shown at left is a crawfish catching a submarine on its left cissors on the map of Louisiana.
The nose number is "594", the last three digits of its Bureau Number.
During 1999 the squadron was moved from the Atlantic wing to the Pacific wing, which also meant a change of the tail code from "LZ" to "PZ".
The unit was disbanded in March 2006.

ルイジアナ州ニューオルリンズ（本機のホームベース）の1996年のエアショーに展示された予備役飛行隊VP-94 "Crawfishers"のP-3Cです。
ロービジになると、尾翼のマーク（左小写真）が何をデザインしたものかもわからなくなります。
これは部隊ニックネームである"Crawfishers"、即ちザリガニが、左下向きに描かれており、その左のハサミで潜水艦を挟んでいます。
このマークの上半分にある意味不明の模様は同隊のホームベースが所在するルイジアナ州の地図のシルエットです。
同隊は1999年に東海岸部隊から西海岸へ所属替えとなり、それに伴いテールコードも当初の"LZ"から写真の"PZ"に変わったという珍しい飛行隊です。
同隊は2006年3月に解散しました。

Above photo shows an EP-3B of VQ-1 "World Watchers" on final at NAS.Atsugi in November 1972.
They changed the color scheme for their EP-3Bs during 1972, and they were repainted in gray/white scheme.
Apart from the colors, there are some differences in markings between the old(dark gray) and the new(light gray) paint schemes.
National insignia and the "NAVY" stencils were moved forward and a little lower on the fuselage side,
and the border between white and grey aligns to the "upper" edge of the left(forward) bar of the national insignia,
while the border on the rear fuselage aligns to the "lower" edge of the bar.

これは前出の写真から約1年後（1972年11月）に撮影した同じくVQ-1のEP-3Bです。
この１年間でカラースキームがライトグレーと白に変わりました。
色以外にも変更がありました。まず胴体の国籍マークとNAVYの文字位置がかなり前方に、且つ少し下側に移動しました。
それに併せて、白とグレーの境界線が（上の写真で説明すると）国籍マークの左バーの上端に合っています。
それに対して、後部胴体の境界線は国籍マークの右バーの下端に合っており、境界線が国籍マークを挟んで上下にズレることとなりました。
但し、ライトグレーの新塗装機でも、1970年代始め頃までは、旧塗装仕様と同様に境界線のズレが無い塗装仕様になっています。

Top photo shows an EP-3B of VQ-2 "Batmen" on final at Alameda in August 1975.
Bottom photo shows the same EP-3B taxing into the ramp soon after landing at Alameda.
I was so lucky as to be able to photograph the VQ-2 aircraft (stationed at Rota, Spain) at NAS.Alameda.
I presumed that this aircraft was flown from Rota to Alameda for major overhauls or modifications
since the base housed a Naval Air Depot which undertook major overhauls of P-3 Orions and A-6 Intruders

09AUG75に加州アラメダのエプロンで撮影していた時に大変ラッキーが事が起こりました。
VQ-2のEP-3Bがスペインのロタから偶然にも飛んで来たからです。
アラメダには当時Naval Air Depotがあり、P-3とA-6のオーバーホールを請け負っていました。
よって、このEP-3Bもオーバーホールのために飛来したものと思います。
テールコードは入っていませんが、同隊のテールマーキングは描かれています。
上段写真はタッチダウン寸前の撮影で、下段写真はその数分後にエプロンへタキシングするところを標準レンズで撮りました。

上の写真は消火剤を満タンに積み、今まさにエンジンを
始動しようとするアエロユニオン社のP-3Aタンカー23です。
左の写真はタンカー22(右)とタンカー23(左)ですが、2機並ん
で消火剤の注入を受けています。注入口は胴体下タンク
の側面にあり、注入用ホースが接続されています。この
日は大変忙しくて、両機共胴体下面に消火剤がこびり
付きオレンジ色に汚れています。

The above photo shows P-3A Tanker 24 of Aero Union parking at her home base of Santa Barbara, CA. Sadly Tanker 24 crashed
on 17OCT91 and it was only two months after the above photo was taken on 18AUG91.
上の写真は同じくアエロユニオン社のタンカー24で、本機のホームベースである加州サンタバーバラの空港で91年８月に写しました。
平和時には機体はきれいに清掃されていて、タンク側面にもオレンジ色の消火剤の付着は認められません。本機はこの写真を写した
わずか２か月後の18AUG91に残念ながら墜落事故で失われています。
