Mitsubishi T-2

The first prototype of the T-2 tandem-seat advanced jet trainer was delivered to JASDF on 15DEC71. Production orders were placed for a total of 96 machines in two basic variants, the ZENKI unarmed trainer and the KOUKI weapons trainer with a 20mm Vulcan rotary cannon (the latter does not have the orange nose, fin and wingtips of the former). The first four machines(serials 101-104) were prototypes, a total of 30 T-2s were ZENKI (serials 105-124 and 147-156) and 62 T-2s were KOUKI (serials 125-146 and 157-196). The 6th and 7th T-2s were converted to FS-T-2Kai, the prototype of the F-1 fighter.

The T-2 equips the 21st and 22nd Sqdn. of the 4th Air Wing at Matsushima (which was badly damaged by Tsunami in March 2011). Some T-2s were on the charge of three F-1 squadrons (3rd, 6th, 8th Sqdns.), the Air Proving Wing at Gifu and the Tactical Fighter Training Group (known as Aggressor Sqdn.) based at Nyutabaru. The last surviving T-2 (s/n.59- 5107 of the Air Development & Test Wing, formerly APW) was retired on 02MAR06.

Provisional T-2 Training Sqdn. was formed on 31MAR75 at Matsushima within 4th Air Wing with two T-2s; renumbered Provisional 21st Sqdn. on 25MAR76 and 21st Sqdn. on 01OCT76. The top photo(#102) shows the 2nd prototype of the T-2, photographed in July 1975. The first four T-2s were initially natural metal finish with orange nose, fin and and wingtips as shown on the top photo. The above three photos show white tail marking, which is a stylized "4" representing the "4"th Air Wing. This white tail marking did not last long, and the 21st Sqdn. changed their tail marking in 1977 (Please refer to the photos below). The top two photos above were taken at Matsushima on the open day(airshow) in 1975 and you can find F-86Fs of the Blue Impulse in the background of the second (middle) photo above.

The photo at left shows a tail marking of the 21 st Sqdn. within the 4th Air Wing used during 1977-1985. There are a lot of pine woods in the Matsushima area where the 4th Air Wing was (still is) homebased, and this marking is designed from a pair of pine needles which have been bent and twisted together into the shape of a figure "4" representing the "4"th Air Wing. This design was commonly used by 21st, 22nd and 35th sqdns controlled under the 4th Air Wing, and the 22nd used yellow/green marking (see the photos below) and the 35th(T-33A) used orange/green one.

The above two photos show T-2s of the 22nd Sqdn. The tail marking of the 22nd was a pair of green pine needles on yellow background. The top photo shows a colorful T-2 ZENKI which was displayed at Tsuiki airshow in 1978 and the lower (immediate above) photo shows a gray overall KOUKI type which was taxing at Komatsu soon after landing. Notice the fuel tank under the wing on the top photo due to a long distance from its home of Matsushima to Tsuiki.

The 4th Air Wing changed their tail marking design in 1985. The top two (top & middle) photos show T-2 ZENKIs of the 21st Sqdn. with their new blue marking. The bottom (immediate above) photo shows a T-2 KOUKI of the 22nd Sqdn. with their new red marking. The top one (T-2/#117) was displayed on the open day at Yokota on 06SEP87. The middle one (T-2/#115) was taxing into the transit ramp at Komaki after landing (Notice the tail cone in open position). I took the bottom photo on the flight line of the 22nd Sqdn. at their home base of Matsushima in 1986.

The Aggressor Sqdn. was formed at Tsuiki with five T-2 KOUKIs and two T-33As on 17DEC81 and moved to Nyutabaru on 16MAR83. They operated gray overall T-2 KOUKIs at the beginning, which was a standard color scheme for the KOUKI model. In 1983, they recieved some additional T-2 KOUKIs and they had operated a total of 7 to 9 T-2 KOUKIs until the unit was re-equipped with F-15s in 1990. In 1985, they started using camou flaged a/c in various grey colors. The top two photos show their T-2s landing and taxing in standard gray scheme for the KOUKI model. I took these photos during the JASDF's annual fighter meet in June 1982, only six months after the unit was formed. I took the bottom two photos at Nyutabaru airshow in 1989. Notice unusual two-digit nose number in red with yellow outline. Notice also the serial # on the tail in "RED" was lightly over-painted in gray.

The top photo shows a T-2 ZENKI of the 3rd Sqdn. taxing at Komatsu in 1982. The tail marking on this a/c was a unit marking for the 3rd Air Wing, which controlled two F-1 sqdns. of the 3rd and the 8th at that time. This red marking had been commonly used by both the 3rd and the 8th Sqdns. during 1978-1979. The 8th Sqdn. changed the color of this same marking from red to yellow at the beginning of 1980. Notice the camouflaged F-1 fuel tank under the wing of the T-2 #117 on the top photo. The photo immediate above shows T-2 KOUKI in camouflage scheme. F-1 Sqdns (the 3rd/6th/8th) started using "camouflaged" T-2s from 1984. Please notice the "shark" nose and the sqdn badge on the intake ramp of the camouflaged #186. Notice also the new sqdn marking "a samurai's helmet" on the fin. The 3rd Sqdn. began to use this samurai marking in August 1983. A camouflaged pod on the outboard wing pylon was a ALE-41 Chaff pod.

I took these three photos on the flight line of the 8th Sqdn. at Misawa on 13SEP87. The top one is a camouflaged T-2 KOUKI. The photo immediate above shows a T-2 KOUKI in standard gray overall. Notice the unusual triangular markings in darker gray on the rudder (three triangles) and on the intake ramp (one triangle pointing forward). The photo at left shows red intake covers used on the T-2 shown on the photo immediate above. It was quite unusual to paint such illustrations on intake covers in JASDF.

The first generation of the Blue Impulse aerobatic team flew F-86F under 1st Air Wing between 1960-1981 homebased at Hamamatsu. The Blue Impulse was re-formed within 21st Sqdn., 4th Air Wing at Matsushima with seven T-2s on 12JAN82. The team made their first official T-2 aerobatic show at Matsushima on 25JUL82. One of the team's T-2 (19-5174, see the 3rd photo from the top) crashed during the official aerobatic show at Hamamatsu Air Base on 14NOV82, and the team stopped their shows. They re-started their official air display on 30OCT83. The Blue Impulse was re-equipped with Kawasaki T-4 trainers in 1996. After that, the T-2s operated by the team were used as regular trainers by the 4th Air Wing retainning the Blue Impulse colors and one T-2 (#163) was transferred to the AirDevelopment & Test Wing at Gifu in the Blue
Impulse colors. The top three photos were taken at Chitose airshow in August 1982. As mentioned above, #174 (the 3rd photo from the top) crashed at Hamamatsu only three months after I took this photo at Chitose. The 4th photo from the top shows a T-2 #128 taxing at Hyakuri with orange fuel tanks under the wing. The photo immediate above shows a T-2 #111 taxing after landing at Hyakuri. Notice the position number (#6) in white on the rudder which they added in the mid-80's
