JASDF received a total of 68 T-33As from USAF in 1955 with JASDF serials between 51-5601 and 51-5668. In addition to these,
Kawasaki built 210 T-33As under licence, with JASDF serials between 61-5201 and 91-5410, and they were delivered between
24MAR56 and 25MAR59. Color scheme was natural metal overall at the beginning, but they were painted overall silver in the 1960's.
Some T-33As operated by the 207th Sqdn at Naha were painted overall light grey for anti-corrosion purposes. During the 70's and
80's, there were two jet training squadrons with T-33As, the 33rd and the 35th Training Sqdns. Apart from the training squadrons,
many other squadrons (including all F-86/F-104/F-4/F-1/F-15 sqdns) were operating the T-33As for general support duties.
The above photo (taken at Tsuiki on 03DEC79) shows a typical flight line arrangement for the JASDF fighter base with a few T-33A
flight lines. The T-33A carried the most variety of different unit markings on its tail and I'd like to show you various photos of them
as much as I can. The last batch of the T-33As were withdrawn from use in 2000.

03DEC79に撮影した築城のフライトラインです。エプロンは工事中で、第六飛行隊のF-86Fは離れたランプに駐機していました。
一番手前には外来のT-33A（航空総隊司令部飛行隊）が駐機しています。

The 1st Sqdn. was a F-86F Sabre squadron undertook advanced jet training at Hamamatsu Air Base and they operated some
T-33As for general support roles. There was a T-33A squadron, the 33rd Training Sqdn. at Hamamatsu at the same time with
the same yellow/black checker band on the tail. In order to distinguish the T-33As of the 1st Sqdn from the ones of the 33rd,
the 1st Sqdn used an orange rectangular ID marking on the fin just above the yellow/black checker band. (see the above photo)

The 1st Air Wing Det. Matsushima was a F-86F Sabre squadron undertook advanced jet training at Matsushima Air Base and they
operated some T-33As for general support duties. The tail marking of the unit was a checker of yellow and black because the
yellow/black checker was a symbol marking for the 1st Air Wing. This unit was a short-lived squadron formed on 01JUL71 and
disbanded on 23AUG73.
上２枚の写真は72年10月に松島基地で写した１空団松島派遣隊のT-33Aです。当時は白黒フィルムだけを使っており、コダクローム
でカラー写真を写し始めたのはこのわずか数週間後です。今にして思えば、もう少し早くコダクロームを使っておくべきだったと
悔やんでいます。松島派遣隊の尾翼ﾏｰｸは四空団のﾏｰｸの輪郭をベースにデザインされていますが（"４"ではなく"１"と読ませる）
上の２枚の写真を見比べると、根元部の太さがかなりバラついています（#260では根元が太く、#247では根元が細い）。

The 3rd Sqdn was based at Misawa Air Base from 01DEC71 up till today. When I took the above three photos, the 3rd Sqdn was
a F-86F Sabre squadron controlled under the 81st Air Group. Please notice that the top and the second photo shows "Travel Pod"
under the fuselage. The 3rd Sqdn used the above shown tail marking (two horizontal red stripes) between 1959-1978.

The 3rd Sqdn changed their tail marking to a new one shown above in 1978 when the 3rd Air Wing moved from Komaki to Misawa and
took over the 81st Air Group. So, the above shown marking was a new 3rd Air Wing marking used during 1978-83. The 8th Sqdn, the
sister squadron within the 3rd Air Wing, shared the same tail marking at the beginning, but changed from red to yellow in 1980.
1978年に三空団が小牧から三沢に移動し、第三飛行隊は新たに採用された三空団のマークを尾翼に付けました。当初は姉妹飛行隊
の第八飛行隊も同じ赤のマークを採用しましたが、識別のため1980年に黄色に変更しました。いずれも1983年まで使われました。
上の写真は1979年の松島航空祭で写しました。但し、展示機ではなく外来機だったと記憶しています。

The above two photos show T-33As of the 6th Sqdn, which was a F-86F Sabre squadron during 1959-1980. The tail marking
shown on the above photos was the 8th Air Wing marking at that time and the 10th Sqdn.(sister squadron within the 8th Wing)
used "blue" tail band instead of the "red" one of the 6th shown above. The above tail marking was used during 1965-80.
You can find some F-86Fs of the 6th Sqdn in the background of the immediate above photo (T-33A/#287).

The 6th Sqdn was re-equipped with Mitsubishi F-1 in 1980 and they changed their tail marking at the same time. This tail
marking came from the squadron badge of the 6th, and this marking is still used on their Mitsubishi F-2 now. The above two
photos show T-33As of the 6th Sqdn taxing at Tsuiki Air Base, the home of the 6th.
You can find some F-86Fs of the 6th Sqdn in the background of the immediate above photo (T-33A/#287).

The 7th Sqdn was a F-86F squadron controlled under the 4th Air Wing at Matsushima and they operated several T-33As for
general support duties. I took the above two photos in 1975 at Matsushima, the home of the 7th. You can find some F-86Fs
of the 7th in the background on the above two photos. The 7th Sqdn used this blue marking between 1964 and 1977.

The 8th Sqdn was a F-86F squadron controlled under the 3rd Air Wing at Komaki between 1967-1978. I took the above two
photos in December 1975 at Komaki Air Base, the home of the 3rd Air Wing. The 5th Technical School based at Komaki
shared the T-33As of the 8th Sqdn at that time, so I did see ten or so T-33As at Komaki when I took the above photos.

所在する第五術科学校もシャチホコを付けたT-33Aを共用して使っていたためです。但し、三空団が三沢に移動した1978年

The 8th Sqdn(3rd Air Wing) moved from Komaki to Misawa on 31MAR78 and changed their tail marking shortly after that.
At the beginning (in 1978) they used the red marking (see the above photo, the tail fin behind the T-33A/#317).
However, soon after the 8th Sqdn was re-equipped with Mitsubishi F-1 at the beginning of 1980, they changed the color of
their tail marking from red to yellow in order to distinguish their a/c.(F-1/T-33A) from the F-1/T-33A of the 3rd Sqdn,
the sister squadron of the 8th under the 3rd Wing control at Misawa.
31MAR78に三空団が小牧から三沢に移動したことに伴い、第八飛行隊は尾翼マークを変更しました。当時新たに設定した
三空団の赤いマークで、三空団隷下の第三飛行隊と同じ色の同じマークを採用していました（上の写真の左奥の尾翼ﾏｰｸ
がそれです）。しかし、第八飛行隊が79年夏からF-1に改編を始めると、姉妹飛行隊（3スコ）のF-1との識別が出来なく
なったことから、第八飛行隊はマークの色を赤から黄色に変更しました。

The 8th Sqdn changed their tail marking again in August 1983. The new marking was a black panther, which came from their
squadron nickname (it's a "Panther" actually), and this panther marking is still used on their Mitsubishi F-2 today.

The 10th Sqdn. was a F-86F squadron under the 8th Air Wing at
Tsuiki Air Base and they carried this 8th Wing marking with blue
tail band between 1965 and 1977. The 10th Sqdn was disbanded on
01APR77. You can see the base op and the tower of Tsuiki Air Base
on the back ground of the above photo.

The 21st Sqdn was an advanced jet training squadron equipped with Mitsubishi T-2, and they operated several T-33As
for general support duties. The above photo shows the T-33A of the 21st taxing at Iruma Air Base soon after landing.

The 33rd Training Sqdn was an intermediate jet training squadron formed on 26OCT64 at Tsuiki with T-33A, which had
been transferred from the 16th Flying Training Wing which was disbanded at the same time. The 33rd moved to Hamamatsu
under the 1st Air Wing control on 30JAN65. The 33rd was disbanded on 31MAR90 at Hamamatsu. The tail marking was a
checker band in yellow and black, which was a symbol marking for Hamamatsu-based jet trainers even today. The T-33As
of the 33rd Sqdn carried various fin cap colours such as yellow (see #273 on the top photo), blue (see #212) or red
(see #230 on the bottom photo), which represented the maintenance team colour within the 1st Air Wing.
第三十三教育飛行隊は26OCT64に解散した第十六飛行教育団のT-33Aを譲り受け、同日付けで築城基地にて編成されました。
その後30JAN65に浜松に移動し、同隊が解散する31MAR90までずっと一空団隷下の浜松基地をホームベースとしていました。
同隊のT-33Aには整備小隊別にフィンキャップの色が決められており、上の３枚の写真では黄色（一番上）、青（中段）及び
赤（最下段）が見られます。

When the 35th Training Sqdn (another T-33A sqdn.) moved from Matsushima to Hamamatsu at the end of March 1979,
both the 33rd and the 35th Sqdns started using their new tail markings, which were similar to each other, at the same time.
The above photo shows the T-33A of the 33rd with their new tail marking. The red figure in this marking was a stylized
"33" meaning the "33"rd Sqdn. and the black & yellow checker was a symbol marking for the 1st Wing based at Hamamatsu.
31MAR79に第35教育飛行隊が松島から浜松へ移動してき時に、両隊のT-33Aを識別する必要性から新しい尾翼マーク

The 35th Training Sqdn was an intermediate jet training squadron with T-33, which was formed on 23AUG73 at Matsushima
under the 4th Air Wing. The 35th moved from Matsushima(4th Wing) to Hamamatsu(1st Wing) on 31MAR79 and the unit was
disbanded on 31MAR91 at Hamamatsu. The above two photos show the T-33As with their early marking in orange, which was
the Wing marking design for the 4th at that time.

下段の写真（#260）の左奥に写っているT-2(#105)は、この写真を写した時からわずか１か月半前の31MAR75に編成された
ばかりの臨時T-2訓練隊の機体です。小生が松島を訪問したこの時点では２機の新品のT-2がエプロンに並んでいましたが、
まだ尾翼マークは付けていませんでした。これから４年後の1979年には、松島のエプロンは２個飛行隊分のT-2であふれ返り、
第35飛行隊は松島から浜松へ追い出される（？）ことになります。

In July 1977, the 4th Air Wing changed their Wing marking to a
new design and the photo at left shows their new one.
The 35th Training Sqdn used an orange base for the new marking.
Notice the "two star" placard in blue on the canopy frame of
the T-33A(#244) shown above. I took the above photo at Iruma
air show in 1977, and I can easily presume that this T-33A was
flown from Matsushima to Iruma to transport the two star general
for the air show.

オレンジのベース色を使いました。上の写真は1977年の入間
航空祭で写しましたが、キャノピー枠に二つ星（桜）のプラカード
が掛けられています。VIP輸送で航空祭に飛来したのでしょう。
当機の奥（隣り）には百里（301Sq.)からのT-33Aも尾翼が見え
ます。左奥の背景にはまだ無塗装銀であったC-1が写っています。

The 35th Training Sqdn moved from Matsushima (4th Wing) to Hamamatsu (1st Wing) 31MAR79, and they changed their tail
marking to a new one at the same time. The blue figure in this new marking was a stylized "35" representing the "35"th
Training Sqdn and the black/yellow checker was a symbol marking for the 1st Air Wing at Hamamatsu. The unit was disbanded
on 31MAR91 and they used this marking till the last day. The photo immediate above shows the T-33A with the serial #620,
which means that this a/c was built by Lockeed. A lot of Lockheed-built T-33As were mothballed for storage after the JASDF
received enough brand-new T-33As from Kawasaki. Some of the once-mothballed Lockheed T-33As were re-activated and
returned to active squadron service during the 80's and the 90's.
松島基地へのT-2配備が進み、エプロンがT-2で溢れてくると、第35教育飛行隊は31MAR79に浜松へ移動しました。これにより
浜松（北）基地はT-33Aの二個飛行隊を擁するT-33A専用訓練基地となりました。上の２枚はその当時の写真です。下段の写真
は600番台のロッキード製T-33Aですが、一旦モスボール保管されたロッキード製の機体が現役復帰して、80〜90年代には各地
の飛行隊で見掛けられるようになりました。

The 201st Sqdn was a F-104J squadron operated under the 2nd Air Wing at Chitose and they operated several T-33As for
general support duties including target towing flight as shown on the above photo (T-33A/#345). Infrared emitting Del Mar
tow target was a very common target used among the F-104 squadrons. On the above photo, the towed target itself was
removed, but its basket is seen under the left wing and the Del Mar winch is seen under the fuselage. The tail marking of
the 201st was red and this marking had been used from 1966 until 1974, when the unit was diabanded. The 201st was re-
activated as a F-15J squadron in 1986, but they did NOT use the same tail marking as shown above.
F-104飛行隊としての第201飛行隊は、上の写真の尾翼マークのみを最初から（付け始めたのは1960年代中頃？）最後まで
（解散は01OCT74)使い続けました。それだけ皆に親しまれた素晴らしいデザインだったのでしょう。また上の写真の機体
にはデルマー標的システムが取り付けられていますが、標的本体のみは外されています。

The 202nd Sqdn was a F-104J squadron operated under the 5th Air Wing at Nyutabaru and they operated several T-33As for
general support duties. The 202nd was re-equipped with the F-15 Eagle in 1982. The top photo(#258) shows the T-33A with
the Del Mar target system including the Del Mar winch under the fuselage. The above showm tail marking was used during
1966-1982.
上段の写真（#258）の機体もデルマー標的システムを装備しています。第202飛行隊がこの尾翼マークを制定した当初は
これより一回り小さなマークをT-33Aの尾翼シリアルより上の部分に付けていましたが、短期間でこの写真のようなマーク
に変更されたようで、202がF-15飛行隊に改編される1982年までずっと愛用されました。
