S-2 Tracker (California Dept.of Forestry)
I took the following photos of CDF's S-2 Trackers between 1990 and 1996 mostly at Hemet Air Attack Base. I still remember that
the engine noise of the S-2 at Hemet reminded me of the Japanese Trackers operated by JMSDF during the 1970's.
In 1973, CDF tested a S-2 Tracker out of Hemet, CA. In 1974, CDF began putting additional S-2's in service with the termination
of single engine airtanker use TBM and AF-2S Guardians. Beginning in 1974, three different color bands were applied to the S-2
tankers based originally on who was the contractor. Orange was used for Hemet Valley FS; Green was for Sis-Q FS; and Blue was
applied to Aero Union. Over time this idea kind of faded and eventually all of the S-2's were repainted with the orange bands.
When I first visited Hemet in June 1990, I found about seven S-2's with CDF markings and five of them were green overall with
orange bands. I did find only two (out of seven) S-2's in their new color scheme of white overall with red bands at that time.
Hemet was only one and a half hours driving distance from my Torrance home at that time, so I visited Hemet for more than ten
times during 1990-1994. The prototype of the turbine powered S-2 Tracker (Tanker 180, see the following photo) for CDF service
made its first flight in 1989 and the old S-2's had been gradually replaced with the Turbo S-2's.
小生がロス郊外に駐在していた1990-1994年に撮影したCDF（加州森林局）のS-2の写真を以下に紹介します。当時自宅から
１時間半の運転で、CDFのS-2の本拠地があるHemet Air Attack Baseに行けるので、駐在中は時々撮影に出掛けました。S-2の
爆音を聞くと70年代に良く写していた海自のトラッカーを思い出していました。特にエンジン始動時の音が好きでした。
1973年にCDFは老朽化したTBMやAF-2Sガーディアンの後継機としてS-2の試験飛行をHemetで開始し、その後S-2の配備を進め
ました。1974当時は運用請負会社別に3色の帯色を決めて、夫々の会社のS-2はその色帯を巻いて飛んでいました。橙色は
Hemet Valley FS、緑はSis-Q FS、青はAero Unionでした。その後視認性の問題からそのルールは厳格に適用されなくなり
全機が視認性の高いオレンジの帯になったそうです。小生が初めてHemetを訪問した1990年、約７機のS-2を確認しましたが、
内５機は全面緑にオレンジの帯でした。残りの２機はCDFが新たに採用した白に赤帯の機体でした。視認性を上げる為に赤白
の新塗装に変更したと思いますが、小生がHemetに通い始めた時にちょうどタイミング良く塗装変更が始まりました。翌年
には早くも全機赤白になっていました。同時にCDFは老朽化が進んでいるS-2に代わりターボプロップ化したS-2の採用を検討し
試作機#180（下段に写真を掲載））を1989年に飛ばしました。その後順次ターボプロップ装備のS-2に更新されて行きました。
2011年秋に十数年振りにHemetを訪れましたが、まだ２機のターボS-2が飛んでいました。とても懐かしかったです。

I took the above photo when I visited Hemet for the first time in JUN90. Two other "GREEN" S-2's are seen on the background
in front of the hangar. Also, a wing tip painted in red is seen in the foreground and it is another CDF S-2 N423DF" in their new paint
scheme of overall white with red bands. They just started changing the color scheme on their S-2s. This "N411DF" made wheel-
up landing on 20JUL01. She(ex-BuNo.136567) is now displayed at "Estrella Warbirds Museum" in Paso Robles, CA as "136404".
上の写真は小生が初めてHemetへ行った時(JUN90)の撮影。当時はほとんどのS-2が緑の古い塗装であり、この写真にも他に２機
の緑のS-2が背景に写っています。手前には赤い翼端が写っていますが、これは当時まだ塗り立ての新しい白赤のペイントスキーム
を施されたS-2 N423DFです。背景のヤシの木などいかにもヘメットらしい写真です。本機は20JUL01に胴体着陸の事故を起こして、
その後加州のPaso Roblesにある"Estrella Warbirds Museum"に展示されています。展示機のBuNo.は何故か136404だそうです。

weatherd green paint. A C-130 in lizard camo seen in the background on the lower photo above is a C-130A "N138FF"

Close up photos of the nose section in old(at left) and new(at right) paint scheme. The CDF's insignia/emblem is seen under the
cockpit on both (old & new) color scheme. On the left photo, a round-shaped mark of fresh green was a touch up mark covered
over the previous insignia. The "CDF" identification was added on the new white scheme.

左写真ではその直ぐ前に円形のﾌﾚｯｼｭｸﾞﾘｰﾝの跡が見えますが、これは以前まで付けられていた古い円形エンブレムを消した跡です。

This Tanker 73 was repainted into new white/red colors in very early timing. Two C-54s are seen in the background, one at the
next right (N460WA) and the other one (N90203) seen far behind under the regi."N406DF".

Red fire retardent had stuck to lower surfaces of the fuselage all the way to the tail wheel. This Tanker 70 crashed on 28AUG01.
赤い消火剤が胴体下面に（尾輪にまで）付着したままになっています。一般的に"平和時"には付着した消火剤を洗い落として
いるので、この機体は最近消火ミッションが有ったと想像されます。本機は28AUG01に墜落事故で失われました。

Tanker 90 was based at Porterville when I took these two photos on 05OCT91. Porterville is about 140miles/230km north of downtown LA. Sadly, the Tanker 90 crashed on 28AUG01.
上と左の写真はロスの北約230kmにあるPortervilleのベースで撮影しました。これらの写真を撮影した時点では、左の写真（タワー上から撮影）の３機がここに常駐していました。Hemetと比較すれば
ずっと小規模なリモート基地でした。タンカー90は残念ながら28AUG01に墜落事故で失われました。本機も含め上述のタンカー70、72、74も墜落又は胴体着陸の重大事故を起こしており、老朽化した
S-2による森林消火ミッションがいかに厳しいものか容易に想像が付きます。

The photo at left(Tanker 96) shows the vertical fin with unusual
marking of "Fresno Air Attack" in small black letters immediately
above the red band.

帯の直ぐ上に"Fresno Air Attack"との珍しい表記があります。

Marsh Aviation of Arizona was contracted to deveop a prototype of the turbine powered S-2 Tracker, and the prototype was
Tanker 180 and first flew in 1989. I photographed this Tanker 180 wearing new color scheme of white with orange bands at Hemet
on 07NOV93. It was a VERY busy day and you can find a couple of P-2s on the background on the grass. The above mentioned
company name "Marsh" was seen on the nose below the cockpit. The obvious external differences between original Tracker and the
turbine-powered Tracker were the powerplants and the nose section. Miner external differences were the hot load (tail) section
and the tail skid. The receptacle for the Turbo Tracker was angled down so less effort is needed to hook up the filling hose to
the a/c. However, the above photo does not look like the "angled-down" receptacle. Was it because of the prototype?? Also, the
tail wheel of the original Tracker had been eliminated and replaced with a tail skid, but this prototype still retained the
original tail wheel.
AZ州のMarsh Aviation（機首に社名表示有り）は1980年代後半に新型トラッカー（ターボプロップに換装）の開発契約を得て、
その試作機を1989年に初飛行させました。それがこの写真のタンカー180であり、帯の色を赤からオレンジに変更した新しい
カラースキームを採用しています。この日(07NOV93)は非常に忙しい１日で、上の写真の背景には２機のP-2が草地に駐機して
います。タンカー180も胴体下面を真っ赤に汚して活躍していました。ターボS-2の外観上の特徴は、機首が尖ったことと、勿論
エンジンが換装されています。それ以外にも消火剤注入口（尾部）の形状が変更（口を下向きにした）され、又尾輪はスキッド
に付け替えられました。しかし、タンカー180には試作機のせいか尾輪がそのまま残されています。
P-2 Neptune
I photographed colorful fire fighting Neptunes of four different companies in southern California during 1990-1994. They were
Aero Union (ex-P2V-7), Neptune, Inc.(ex-P2V-5, ex-P2V-7), Hawkins & Powers (ex-P2V-7) and Minden Air Corp.(P-2V-7).
A few Neptunes I photographed during the early 1990's should still be in active fire fighting service even now.
以下の写真は1990-1994年の期間に南部カリフォルニア州内のAir Attack Baseで撮影したP-2の写真です。大半はP2V-7からの
改造機でしたが、一部にP2V-5も使われていました。運用会社によってカラースキームは異なりますが、いずれも魅力あるカラ
フルな塗装をしており、撮影していて楽しかったです。撮影出来たのは以下４社のP-2です。Aero Union (ex-P2V-7), Neptune, Inc.
(ex-P2V-5, ex-P2V-7), Hawkins & Powers (ex-P2V-7) 及び Minden Air Corp.(P-2V-7)です。

These two photos were taken at Porterville Air Attack Base
and the observation tower is seen in the background of
the left photo. The Tanker 01 P2V-7 N701AU was operated
by "Aero Union". In JAN10 this "N701AU" was seen at Chico
CA in chopped up shape for scrap.
この塗装はアエロユニオン社所属機のカラースキームで
以下に掲載するP-3も同様の塗装です。上と左の写真は
加州のPorterville Air Attack Baseで写しました。
"平和時"はこの写真の通りエプロンには人っ子一人いない
状態で写真撮影も全く自由でした。それは他のベースでも
同じでした。しかも民間の飛行場ですからゲートも金網も
ありません。左写真の左奥に管制塔が見えます。又上の
写真のP-2の胴体下には遠くに駐機するO-2AとTS-2Aが
見えます。本機は2010年に加州Chicoでバラバラにされて
いる所をマニアに確認されています。

The above photo is another Aero Union P2V-7 Tanker 03 taken at Paso Robles, CA. Paso Robles is located about 170 miles/280 km
north west of Los Angeles. This Tanker 03 was based at Paso Robles when I took this photo in August 1991. Tanker 03 was
sold to Chilean company "Servisios y Transportes Heliworks" and received a new Chilean civil regi "CC-CHU". The CC-CHU
retained Aero Union's red/white color scheme and its tail number 03 even after transferred to Chile.
上の写真もアエロユニオン社のP2V-7、タンカー03で、加州のPaso Robles（ロスの北西約280ｋｍ）で写しました。この時も"平和時"
で周りは人っ子一人いない状態です。手前に"Vehicle Parking"の立札が見えますが、外から車を乗り付けるとゲートもフェンスも
無くて、いきなりP-2の目の前まで来てしまいました。本機はその後（2000年代初頭？）チリの"Servisios y Transportes Heliworks"
社に売却されてチリに渡りましたが、チリでもアエロユニオン社の塗装とタンカー番号03をそのまま残して飛んでいました。

broken up at Chico, CA in 2009.
別のアエロユニオン社のP2V-7 タンカー18です。アエロユニオン社のP2V-7は他社のP2Vと外観を比較すると中央胴体下のタンク
取付改造部があまり出っ張っておらずオリジナルの形状に近くなっています。でも補助ジェットエンジンが外されているのはP2V-7
らしさを半減させています。因みに、本機は2009年に加州Chicoでバラバラになっている姿を確認されています。

The above Tanker 99 was operated by Minden Air Corp. This photo shows the Tanker 99 was taxing back to the ramp after landing
at Fox(Gen.William J Fox) Field Air Attack Base, CA. which is fairly close to Edwards AFB. Sadly, she crashed on 03OCT03.

Fox Field基地はエドワーズAFBの近くにあり、この日（04NOV93）は本機以外にも外来のタンカーが沢山飛来して、終日忙しくミッション
を繰り返していました。上の写真はミッションを終え誘導路をタキシングするところで、また消火剤を積み込んで再発進して行きました。
残念ながら本機は03OCT03に墜落事故で失われています。

The above two photos are Tanker 140(Tanker # is shown on the Jet engine nacelle) taken at Hemet in 1993. The upper photo
shows the tanker 140 had just taxied out from the Hemet ramp for another mission, and you can see the red fire retardent stuck
on the lower surfaces of the fuselage. The Tanker 140 was operated by Hawkins and Powers.
上の2枚の写真はHawkins and Powersで運用されていたP2V-7で、上段の写真はHemetのランプで消火剤を満タンにして、ちょうど
再発進を始めたところです。Hawkins and Powers社のP-2でユニークな点は、タンカー番号が垂直尾翼に大きく書かれておらず、
補助ジェットエンジンナセルの側面に記入されていることです。垂直尾翼に付けられたの円形のエンブレムは会社のマークです。

I took the above photo of Tanker 04 operated by Neptune Inc. at Hemet base. You can find another P-2 in the far background
on the right and it is Tanker 140 (refer to the second photo above taken on the same day). Neptune Inc. operated both P2V-"7"
and P2V-"5"(see the photos below) at the same time. Please note the clear observation nose was painted over in grey(?), but a
side window at the nose still remained clear (un-painted).
上の写真はNeptune Inc.で運用されていたP2V-7で、Hemetのエプロンで写しました。当時の状況は良く覚えていませんが、キャノピー
の中に人影(パイロット?）が見えるので、発進準備を進めていたのかも知れません。ランプが濡れているので、消火剤の汚れを洗い
落としていたことがわかります。画面右奥に見える機体は２枚上の写真に写っているタンカー140です。Neptune IncではP2V-7と
同時にP2V-5も運用していましたが、P2V-5は下の写真で紹介します。機首の透明風防は塗り潰されていますが、直ぐ後ろの小窓は
そのまま透明で残されています。

The above photo shows P2V-"5" Tanker 05 of Neptune Inc. parking at Fox Field, CA. Main external differences between P2V-7
and this P2V-5 were (1) shape of the canopy, and (2) nose landing gear design. Please note the clear observation nose and
a small side window at the nose were both painted over in silver. Please note also that the red fuselage lines seen on the
above photo were broader than the ones seen on the P2V-7(Tanker 04) in the second photo above. I did find a 2009 photo of
this a/c on the internet, which showed this Tanker 05 was still in active service in 2009.
上の写真はNeptune Inc.で運用されていたP2V-"5"で、Fox Fieldにて写しました。同社のP2V-7との外観上の主な相違点は、元型
の違いより（１）キャノピーの形状及び、（２）前脚の形状が挙げられます。マニアックに更に細かい相違点を挙げれば、上の機体
では機首の透明風防のみならず、機首側面の小窓まで銀で塗り潰されています。また胴体の稲妻形の赤白帯の赤線はタンカー04
（2枚上の写真）のものと比べてかなり太い赤線になっています。もっと細かい（どうでもよい）事まで探せば、垂直尾翼の上
で枝分かれしている赤いデザインですが、枝分かれの仕方（枝の太さとか）が各機バラバラです。また民間レジの書体は＃04の通常（90度）書体に対して、上の写真の#05では斜め書体で表記されています。
本機を2009年に撮影した写真をネット上で見付けましたが、何とまだ同社で飛んでいました。機首風防は透明に戻されています。

Both of the P-3 tankers are now loaded with retardant
from the receptacle mounted on the side of the tank. >
Please note the orange coloured belly of both tankers
22 & 23 due to repeated busy missions from Hemet base.

on 17OCT91 and it was only two months after the above photo was taken on 18AUG91.
上の写真は同じくアエロユニオン社のタンカー24で、本機のホームベースである加州サンタバーバラの空港で91年８月に写しました。
平和時には機体はきれいに清掃されていて、タンク側面にもオレンジ色の消火剤の付着は認められません。本機はこの写真を写した
わずか２か月後の18AUG91に残念ながら墜落事故で失われています。
