E.E.Canberra TT.18 in 1/48 scale

(Airfix kit plus some Classic Airframes' parts)

I visited RAF St.Mawgan in August 1974, and I was lucky enough to be able to photograph several Canberra TT.18s of No.7 Squadron on the flight line. I had a very strong impression on the yellow/black paint scheme on under surfaces of the aircraft. A top photo above is one of the pictures I took at St.Mawgan back in 1974. After Forty four years from my visit to St.Mawgan, I started building Canberra kit in 1/48 scale. A photo immediate above shows my Canberra model which I completed a couple of weeks ago.

I bought two Canberra kits in 1/48, an Airfix's Canberra B(i).6/B.20 kit and a Classic Airframes' Canberra TT.18 kit. I wondered which kit to be used as a base kit of my Canberra TT.18 project. I finally chose an Airfix kit because I had impression that it should be easier to build it in comparison to building the Classic Airframe kit. It could be my misjudgemet, as a Classic Airframes kit was recommended to use in the Britmodeller forum before I started my Canberra project. After I started building the kit, I realized the differences between the two kits in detailed and more realistic fashion. It is my pleasure to acknowledge the great help which John and James have given to me in the Britmodeller forum. I finally realized that your recommendation on the Classic Airframe kit was truely right. Even though, I still enjoyed building the Airfix kit so much.

Panel/Rivet Lines

(above 4 photos), A photo at top left shows the Airfix's original mold on upper wing surface. The recessed panel lines are fairly heavy and there are no rivet lines. I'm not happy with the mold, and I decided to erase the heavy panel lines at first. A photo at top right shows the way how I backfilled the recessed panel lines. I used the heat-stretched sprue runner(diameter 0.2-0.3mm) to fill the recessed line and I glued it by using super glue and Tamiya Extra Thin Cement. A photo at bottom left shows the wing surface after filling the recessed lines. After that, I smoothen the surface by sanding, and a photo at bottom right shows the wing surface after sanding.

(above 2 photos), After smoothening the surface, I engraved fine panel lines by using a needle-type scriber as shown on the above two photos. Panel line mold on Airfix kit is not very accurate, so I surveyed a lot of walkaround photos of the Canberra to determine the panel line layout. I used thin(0.25mm) plastic strips to reproduce the rased portions on the flat surface as shown on the photos above.

(above 4 photos), I engraved fine rivet lines allover the surfaces of the Canberra model. I fully understand that the rivet lines are not clearly visible in a few distance on the actual airframe, so I engraved the rivet lines in very soft/mild fashion. Top two photos shows the rivetting tools I used. They are UMM-USA's riveting tools with 0.55mm pitch. I have a single wheel tool and a double wheel tool as well. I used the double wheel tool for the rivet lines closely along the panel line as shown on the photo at bottom left(tailplane). The same idea is applied on the wing surface as shown on the photo at bottom right.

Tailplane Modification

(above 4 photos), Tailplain modification is essential for the Airfix kit. A photo at top left shows the differences between Airfix and Classic Airframes parts. Classic Airframe part looks much better, on the other hand, I'm totally unsatisfied with the Airfix part. The Britmodeller Forum kindly provided me with useful reference for tailplane modification. I think the base(root) of the tailplane is too high(by appox.2.5mm) on the Airfix part. At the beginning, I cut out most of the tailplane/fuselage junction stub as shown on the photo at top right.

As shown on the photo at bottom left, I built a structure(tailplane support) with two pin holes inside the rectangular opening at the base of the tailplane. The base/root of the tailplane is scratch-built by myself by partially using a cut out piece from the Classic Airframes' fuselage part. You can clearly see the difference in appearance between Before & After modification shape as shown on the photo at bottom right.

(above 4 photos), Top two photos show how I fit the tailplame to the fuselage part. A photo at bottom left shows tailplanes with elevators attached. I added a small trimmer fairing as shown on the photo. Tailplane modification looks successful as shown on the photo at bottom right.

(above photo), Please note the uneven surface at the rear end of the tailplane assenbly.

Nose and Cockpit

(above 4 photos), Frankly speaking, I did not take so much efforts on detailing the cockpit and the back seaters area simply because they all are painted in black and the interrior details are not clearly visible from the outside after the model is completed. I used most of the airfix's cockpit parts, but I used three resin parts of the ejection seat included in the Classic Airframes' kit. I also use several photo-etched parts from Eduard. I made up some kind of details on the right hand side of the cabin wall by using plastic and resin bits from my junk box. But the details are NOT an accurate representation of the real airplane.

(above 4 photos), Top two photos show cockpit interrior details seen from the outside. Not much details are clearly visible after the canopy part(clear plastic) is placed on top of the cockpit. Bottom two photos show differences(comparison) in canopy shape between Airfix part and Classic Airframes one. Airfix one is flatter/thinner in height and smaller in size than the Crassic Airframes one as shown on the photos. The Classic Airframes part was recommended to use in the Britmodeller forum, and I decided to use it following their suggestion.

(above 2 photos), A photo at above left shows comparison of Airfix part with Classic Airframes part. Max diameter in the mid fuselage is almost the same on both kits. However, I realized that the transition point from the straight line to the tapered nose line is different as shown on the photo. So, the airfix nose looks thicker than the Crassic Airframes nose.

A photo at above right shows comparison of Airfix nose with actual Canberra nose. As you can see, the Airfix nose looks much thicker than the actual Canberra nose, in particular the side view of the glass nose is very different. So, I think the Classic Airframes nose should look more accurate than the Airfix one.

(3 photos at left/above), I took a photo at top left immediately before I glued the canopy part on top of the cockpit. I had a time consuming effort to make good fitting between the Classic Airframes' canopy part and the Airfix's nose. I added an external rear view mirror in front of the side window. A photo at top right shows the nose section seen immediately after I glued the clear parts. Canopy fitting on the nose is not too bad and I applied green putty to fix small gaps between them. A photo at bottom left shows a underside window(a small clear plastic) which I added on the nose.

(above photo), The nose looks OK with me, but I still regret the thick nose of the Airfix kit a little bit.

Undercarriage 脚

(above 4 photos), A photo at top left shows a original Airfix part of the nose gear strut. I added some details and structual strength on the strut as shown on the photo at top right. Sorry for my typo on the caption....true/engrave deep line, false/engrage deep line. Bottom two photos show the nose gear assembly in completed fashion. I painted the strut in light grey.

(above 4 photos), I used a Crassic Airframes' resin part for the main landing gear well. I painted it in white as shown on the photo at top left. A photo at top right shows how I added a small detail(a metal part) on the main gear strut. Bottom two photos show landing gear assembly glued on the landing gear well. I painted the strut in white. I shortened the length of the strut by 2.5mm at the end in order to adjust the sitting attitude on the flat & level surface. After I completed the Canberra model, I was indicated that I picked up the wrong main wheels. However, I've been so tired tackling this Canberra kit, my Canberra still have the wrong wheels today(Ha-Ha!).

(above 2 photos), These photos show the inboard doors for the main landing gear bay. A photo at left shows the comparison in shape between an Airfix part(at left) and a Classic Airframes part. I choose Classic Airframes part because it is more accurate in shape. I added some details on the Classic Airframes part as shown on the photo at left. A photo at right shows the door parts in finished shape after painting and washing.

(above photo), Undercarriage looks OK with me. I omitted adding hydraulic lines on the main landing gear as the lines are hardly visible.

Target Towing Winch

(above 4 photos), I used Crassic Airframes' resin parts for the Rushton target towing winch(see photo at top left). Among the resin parts, I did not use some of them(target parts) because those parts are too fragile, instead, I made the target by myself by using plastic stick(white) and thin brass sheet as shown on the photo at top right. A photo at bottom left shows the assembled target winch before painting, and the bottom right photo shows the assembly after painting.

Other small parts

(above 4 photos), A photo at top left shows the wing-tip tanks of both Airfix part(top) and Classic Airframes part(bottom). I had an impression that the Classic Airframes tank is too short, so I decided to use Airfix tanks. However, I do not like the shape(curve) of the nose of the tank, so I sanded and reshaped the nose as shown on the photo at top right. I added some small details on the tank as shown on the bottom two photos including vortex generators.

(3 photos above & at left), I used Eduard photo-etched parts for the flaps in lowered position. I added some details by using plastic pieces as shown on the photo at top left. Most headaching question was how I attach(glue) the flaps to the wing. What I did was.....I soldered brass pieces(pike) on the backside of the photo-etched parts, and I inserted the pikes into the wing part.

(2 photos above), Aileron parts of the Airfix kit have no details, no panel lines at all. So, I added panel lines, rivet lines, a trimmers fairing(plastic) and a small tub(brass) at the traling edge as shown on the photo at above left.

(3 photos above & at left), A photo at top left shows a small air intake which I made by using brass pipe and plastic. I misunderstood at first that there are two intakes on both right abd left side, and so I made two. Actually it is placed only on the right side as shown on the photo at top right. I made various small parts as shown on the photo at bottom left including various antennas, a drain pipe, etc. by using metal materials mostly.

(4 photos above), According to the information I received via Britmodeller forum, the Canberra TT.18 "WJ639" was a unique in being the only TT.18 to have a spotlight fitted under each engine nacelle for night towing work. It also had the external rear view mirrors and associated fairlings fitted just ahead of the towing operators windows. A photo at top left shows the spotlight housing which I added by using epoxy putty. The top left photo also shows a landing lamp I added and the lower spoiler heads I engraved.

A photo at top right shows some details I added on the lower inboard wing. I also added ident lights immediately aft of the nose landing gear as shown on the photo at bottom left. Also, the tail ident light is added as shown on the photo at bottom right.

(2 photos above), I corrected the shape of the vertical fin (bottom portion of the leading edge) as shown on the above two photos. I used the same shape as the Classic Airframes part.

Afterword

I fully enjoyed building this Airfix kit even though I'm not fully satisfied with the thick nose of the Airfix kit. Other than that, I'm happy with the Airfix kit, especially all moving surfaces are molded separately and I like it so much. Also, I like the high quality of the Airfix decal sheet very much.
This time, I used "wheel-type" riveting tools for the first time and I engraved fine rivet lines on the all surfaces overall. I'm quite satisfied with the results of the riveting tools which can give much precision sence to the surface of my model. I surely will use the same riveting tools on my next project of Itareli's C-119 in 1/72 scale. Before closing, I would very much like to express my appreciation again to James and John for their great help with lots of useful information on the Britmodeller forum.
