Avro Vulcan (Airfix, 1/72)

I visited the RAF Waddington airshow in July 2014 and I was so happy to see the only flyable Vulcan on the display area (please see the above photos). This Vulcan's demo-flight was so impressive and exciting to me. This Waddington memory is the main motivation of my Vulcan project I started at the beginning of 2015. It took me four months to complete my Vulcan project and I finifhed the Vulcan in May 2015. I like the mid-1970s color scheme of the Vulcan...."Dark Green" and "Medium Sea Grey" on upper surfaces with "Light Aircraft Grey" under surfaces. I used a book "Aeroguide 29 Vulcan" as a good reference for my modeling, but the most useful references were many many walk-around photos which I took by myself in England and in the US(Omaha) before. Many of my Vulcan photos can be found on my website "on other pages".

After-market Parts/decals,

I used the following after-market parts/decals on my Vulcan project.
(1) Fundekals, Avro Vulcan B.2 (decal sheet)
(2) Two Mikes, Landing Gear Bays & Doors (resin)
(3) Two Mikes, Seamless Intakes (resin)
(4) Flightpath, Detail Set (photo-etched parts; I used only some of them)

I also purchased resin parts of weighted wheels by "Mastercasters". However unfortunately, the quality was not as good as I expected, and I did not use the resin parts. Fundekals decal sheet is in good quality, but the data stencils are too strong(or heavy) on a 1/72 model, and I used only a few data stencils from the Fundekals. As for the Two Mikes resin parts, they are in good quality, especially the landing gear bays, and I purchased them during the IPMS/USA's National Convention directly from the Two Mikes.

Wings & Movable Surfaces

I cut and separated all movable surfaces (elevons & rudder) from the wing and I placed it back to the wing in "off-set" position at the end. It was much difficult than I thought it was, and I had hard and time-consuming efforts to adjust all movable surfaces in good fit on the wing. I used 0.3mm brass wire (two brass pins each) to fix movable surfaces to the wing as shown on the photos below. Original panel lines (raised) are sanded off completely and I scribed all panel lines by using a needle-type scriber. My walk-around photos helped me a lot when I scribed panel lines.

As shown on the photos below, a rudder portion is also separated from the fin, and fixed it later in the position off to the right a little.

Landing Gears & Wheel Bays

These photos(above & at left) show "Two Mikes" resin parts for landing gear bays and doors. These are quality parts and I was fully satisfied with these resin parts. Fitting to the kit parts is fairly good.

Above two photos show how I installed the Two Mikes mainwheel bay into the wing part. At first I cut out the shallow main gear bay out of the undersides of the wing part as shown in the photos at above left. Then I inserted the resin bay into the wing part and glued together as shown at above right.

I added some details on the main and front gear struts as shown on the photo at above left. Photos at above right and below show main landing gear assembly with wheels after painted. I added a lock strut which is ignored on the kit parts as shown on the photo at above right.

Intake & Tailpipe

(photos above & at left)
Assembling the "Jet Intake" area is the most difficult part of the Vulcan project. I used Two Mikes "Seamless Intake"(see photo at above left) to make things "A LITTLE" easier and quicker. However, I still had to make time-consuming efforts to fit this seamless intake to the intake lip of the kit parts. Also, the splitter plate of the kit part is too thick(see photo at above right), and so I decided to cut out the plate and replaced it with a thin(0.3mm) plastic sheet.

(photos above & at left)
I used a supporting jig(as shown on the photo at above left) to glue the 0.3mm plate to the intake lip. Also, I made a small hole inboard of the splitter plate as shown on the photo at above right. I made another hole on the cabin side to make cabin window with a clear part.

(photos above & at left)
Tailpipe is another headache. I did thin down the edges of the tail pipes. After that, I wound thin(0.14mm) plastic stripe of 2mm width around the rear end of the tail pipe to make sharp edge around it as shown on the photo above. After painted, I used Hasegawa's duralumin finish sheet(self-adhesive metal sheet) around the rear end of the tailpipe as shown on the photo at left. I think of Olympus 301 turbojets on my Vulcan.

Tail Fairing 尾部

I scratch built brake parachute stowage compartment by using plastic sheet as shown on the photo at top left. The door for the stowage compartment was made of two pieces of parts which I cut and separated from the kit tail parts. I scribed all panel lines around the tail fairing before I glue it to the rear end of the fuselage.

Looking good!

Crew Entrance Door

(photos above & at left)
A kit part is used for the entrance door after I cut out unnecessary molds inside of the door. I used a photo-etched part (by Flightpath) for the upper portion of the ladder attached to the door. Lower part of the ladder is made of a brass wire and a plastic line. I made the operating jacks by using aluminum pipe and a nickel-silver wire. I scratch built some cabin interior details around the crew entrance door as shown on the photo at left.

Looking good!

Other Small Parts

(Above four photos)
Top left photo shows external small parts such as antennas, pitot tube, etc. made of plastic pieces, brass wire, nickel-silver wire and photo-etched parts. Top right photo shows the same small parts after painted including wiper blades made of brass wire. Red arrows shown on the bottom two photos show these small parts glued in place on the fuselage surfaces.

(Above two photos)
I used CMK's clear red parts molded as navigation/anti-collision lights. A photo at above right shows two anti-collision lights glued in place under the jet intake.

(Above two photos)
A photo at above left shows a total of six airbrake assemblies in extended position, four upper brakes plus two lower brakes. I used Flightpass's photo-etched parts together with some plastic pieces for these airbrakes. A photo at above right shows a refuelling probe made of brass & aluminum pipes and a couple of parts cut out from the kit part.

(photos at above & at left)
I added some details on undersurfaces immediately aft of the left mainwheel bay by using some plastic pieces. Top left shows some white plastic pieces and a couple of rectangular holes I added at the location. Top right shows my walk-around photo of the actual Vulcan displayed at the SAC museum near Omaha. Bottom photo shows the area after painted.

Painting Process

(above four photos)
These photos show my Vulcan immediately before spraying the "Mr.Surfacer 1200". Before spraying the Mr.Surfacer 1200, I applied masking tapes on several areas including canopy and jet intake as shown on the photo at top left.

(above two photos)
After spraying the "Mr.Surfacer 1200" and fixed some problem areas, then I sprayed "Light Aircraft Grey" on under surfaces. After that, I painted "Medium Sea Grey" on all over the upper surfaces. On both grey paint, I sprayed several shades of grey paint to represent fading/weathering of the camouflage colors. Then, I applied masking tape/sheet over the "Medium Sea Grey" area as shown on the above photos. I partially sprayed "Dark Green" already on the left wing tip.

(above two photos)
Above photos were taken soon after I sprayed a few shades of "Dark Green" all over the upper surfaces.

(above two photos)
After I finished painting the camouflage colors, then I sprayed red and dark blue of the national roundels. Above photos shows the masking process of the roundels.

(above two photos)
Then, I masked and painted(sprayed) various antennas on the fuselage/wing surfaces in light ocher as shown on the above two photos.

I almost finished painting on the fuselage and wing.

Finally Completed

(above three photos)
It took me four months to complete this Vulcan project between January and May 2015.

(above four photos)
Since the upper surface of the Vulcan's huge wing looks so flat and expressionless, I decided to display the airbrakes in extended position to add some eye-catching points on the upper wing. Due to the same reason, I displayed the inboard elevons in lowered position

(above four photos)
These photos show the nose section of the Vulcan. I'm happy with the thin(0.3mm) splitter plate on the photos which I replaced with the thick plate of the kit. I should have glued the nose landing gear a little more tilted towards the rear(tail).

(above four photos)
Top photo shows airbrakes and anti-collision red lights on both upper and lower surfaces of the wing. I was not able to find any clear photos showing details of upper airbrake housing(bay), so I did not put any details inside of the upper airbrake bay.

(above four photos)
Compared to the Olympus 200-series tailpipes, the "Olympus 301" exhaust nozzles (shown on my model) are shorter and of more or less constant diameter throughout their length. Please note the "oil breathers"(made of brass pipes) beneath the tail pipes as shown on the bottom photo.

(above four photos)
These photos show under surfaces of the Vulcan. The panel lines on the under-surfaces are so complicated that I had to make time-consuming and tedious efforts to scribe each and every panel line based on the walk-around photos I took myself.

Afterword

I'm generally satisfied with the results of this Vulcan project, but as usual, I'm not satisfied with the results of some areas such as (1) tail pipes with roundness error, (2) unsatisfied painting technique on weathering and stains, (3) poor original molding of many small intakes all around the aircraft, which I did not rework/remake and (4) a nose landing gear which should have been slightly tilted toward the tail. In any case, I enjoyed building this Airfix kit very much.
