NC-121K Super Constellation (Heller, 1/72)

On December 1st 1970 (44 years ago!!), I was taking photographes at Yokota AB near Tokyo and I was waiting for target aircraft coming in and going out near the taxi way (just outside of the fence). I noticed a C-121 coming in on fainal a few miles away and it landed on the runway. I was so excited to see that the C-121 was painted in red and white overall, which I had NEVER seen before. The aircraft turned into the taxi way and taxied down into the right in front of myself. I took some black & white photos of this beautiful aircraft with my 135mm tele-lens. It was a NC-121K of VXN-8 Project Magnet nicknamed "Paisano Dos". A B&W photo shown below is the one I took 44 years ago at Yokota.

Naturally, I wanted to build my C-121 model finished in red and white overall with "Paisano Dos" markings for many years. However, It took me quite some time to find a decal sheet (Microscale 72-405) for the "Paisano Dos". Fortunately enough, a friend of mine obtained the decal sheet through internet a few years ago, and I started building the "Paisano Dos" in March 2014.

I used the following after-market parts/decals to complete this NC-121K model.

(1) Microscale decal sheet #72-405
(2) Extratech photo etched parts
(3) Flightpath engine cowlings (resin)
(4) SAC white metal gear struts (I used only nose one)
(5) Fisher resin parts of the followings
* Corrected nose
* Corrected wheels
* Fowler Flap set
* Engine cowling set (I used props and engine front housings only)
* Corrected wing-tip tanks

All other details were scratch-built by myself.

Corrected Nose

The above three photos show comparison in shape of the Fisher's "Corrected nose" with the kit part. As you can see, the Fisher's resin parts effectively improve the shape of the nose.

Fitting between the Fisher part and the kit part is fairly good and you can enjoy smooth contour of the nose by delicate adjustment. However, fitting between the Fisher gray nose and the Fisher clear part is not so good, and I had a hard time in making the clear part in good fit with the gray resin nose.

Looking good!

Corrected Engine Cowling

The above four photos show comparison in shape of the following three parts, (1) kit part, (2) Fisher's resin part and (3) Flightpath's resin part. I chose the Flightpath parts at the end becuase the Fisher part looked too slim in daiameter to me, even though the Fisher part had better molding and separated cowl flaps, which was so attractive to me.

Fitting between the Flightpath part and the kit part was acceptable enough, but still I had hard efforts and time consuming adjustment between the kit part and the Flightpath parts. The most difficult part was "how to align four cowling parts sitting on the kit part(wing) in the same way/direction". I used Fisher's resin parts for engine front housings, which I guled on top of the Flightpath resin part. A gray resin parts partially seen on the photo at above left are Fisher's resin parts of engine front housing.

Looking good!

Wing-tip Tank

Fitting between the Fisher part (tank) and the kit part (wint-tip) was good enough. I used a brass wire (tank side) and a brass pipe (wing-tip side) to join the tank on the tip of the kit wing as shown on the photo at above left. Navigation lights (green on the right and red on the left) have to be added on outboard side of the both tanks.

Nose landing gear

I used "Extratech" photo-etched parts on the nose gear well as shown on the photos above. I added brass wire/pipe and plastic pieces on the gear well to add more details. I glued the nose weight (fishing weight) just behind the cockpit as shown on the photo at lower left.

I used a SAC's white metal part for nose gear strut and Fisher's resin parts for nose wheels. Wiring harness for the taxi lights are made of brass wire, and I added a few hydraulic lines by using brass wire.

Main landing gear

I used "Extratech" photo-etched parts on the main gear well as shown on the photos above. I added brass wire/pipe and plastic pieces on the gear well to add more details.

A photo at above left shows the main landing gear and the gear well, which were painted and washed already. I used some photo-etched parts on the inside surfaces of the doors. A photo at right shows main landing gear assembly, and I used Fisher's resin parts for the wheels/tires. I added a few hydraulic lines by using fine brass wire. I also put additional details with small plastic pieces and brass bits.

Fowler Flap

I like to build my model with its flaps in lowered position, so I purchased the Fisher's "Fowler Flap Set". Quality of the mold was not bad, but it neglected the actuating mechanism of the flap. So, I added nickel silver wire as a poor substitution for the mechanism, which is actually quite complicated. I used fine brass wire to connect the flaps to the trailing edge of the wing. Fitting of the resin parts (wing side) to the kit parts (wing) was not so bad, but I made time consuming efforts to make it good fit.

Tail Plane

I cut off the rudder portion at first, and then scribed recessed lines as shown on the photo at left. I glued fine plastic lines along on the recessed line to represent horizontal ribs on the rudder. I used brass wire to connect the rudder to the vertical fin as shown on the photo at right.

I separated all rudders, elevators and trim tabs from the tail wings and put them back to the tail wings in the "off-center" positions, which is my favourite change. I added an anti-collision light (clear red plastic) on the top of the center tail fin and two small tail lights at the tail end of the fuselage as shown on the photo at left. As you possibly know, many of the late production machines of the C-121 did not have rudders on the center vertical fin, and the "Paisano Dos" was one of them.

Looking good!

.

Upper Wing Surface

I filled up putty over the recessed portions on the upper surface of the right wing. Then I sanded the area for smooth surface. After that, I made a square opening to make an outlet seen on the upper surface of the wing (please refer to the photo shown below left).

A photo at above left shows an actual EC-121 wing which I photographed at Sacrament museum. I made "A" and "B" with plastic pieces as shown on the photo at above right.

Propellers

I used Fisher's resin parts for propellers, which are included in the Fisher's "Engine Cowling Set". They provided an useful jig for propeller assembly as shown on the photo at the middle above. It was truely painstaking (tedious too!) work to sand, paint and decal set on the 12 proprller blades. I used decals for the red line and black edge on the blades.

Antennas

I used Modelkasten's "Stretch rigging" for antenna wire, which is a flexible fine line (0.13mm diameter) stretchable by max.30% designed for aircraft modelers. This was my first time to use this "Stretch rigging" and it was very good and useful. I used 5-10% stretch-ratio this time. The antenna support(pillar) at both ends of the antenna wire was made of brass pipe as shown on the photos above. A photo at left shows various antennas which I made of brass wire, plastic bits and photo-etched parts picked from my junk box.

Looking good!

Base Assembly

These three photos were taken soon after I completed the basic assembly process of my "Paisano Dos", which was ready for base coating (surfacer). Most resin parts have already been incorporated with the kit airframe. I sanded all raised panel lines off from the kit parts and I scribed all panel lines by using a needle-type scriber. The most difficult surfaces on which to scribe were some steeply curved surfaces such as the root of the upper wing and all surfaces around the engine nacelles. It was really painstaking work to scribe each and every panel line on the steeply curved surfaces. I made some additional windows on the fuselage side.

White/Red Paint

Before spraying white and red paint, I applied base coat (surfacer) overall to detect some imperfections such as scratches, dents and cracks. After fixing all the imperfections, I applied several layers of white paint overall at first. Then, I masked off for the red (international orange) area and I applied the red paint over the white surface. The above photos were taken soon after I applied the red paint and removed some (not all) masking tapes.

.

Silver & Black Paint

After white & red paint, I applied masking tapes again to spray silver and black paint as shown on the photo at above left. I used (always use) Creos Hobby's "Mr.Color" for painting, which is a lacquer type paint. After I took above two photos, I applied thin grey washing overall by using Tamiya's enamel paint. I scrived fine rivet lines only on the bare metal area of the wing before spraying the silver paint, and a photo at left depicts fine rivet lines on the silver area.

.

Finally Completed

I made hard efforts to fix the dihedral angle of 7 degrees on my "Paisano Dos". I adjusted the dihedral angle at 7 degrees by repeating sanding, cutting and bending so many times, and it was really time consuming work.

By using the Fisher's resin parts for the corrected nose, the nose section looks very good enough.

I found a few photos of the NC-121K "Paisano Dos" on the book "Naval Fighter" #8 C-121 Constellation. The photos show the "Paisano Dos" carring two tip-tanks under the fuselage, which attracted me so much. According to the "Naval Fighter" book, this modification added another 1,200m to the plane's range. I used kit parts for the tanks under the fuselage, and I made its pylons from the kit wing.

.
I used enamel paint for exhaust stain behind the engine because it is quite easy and safe to erase the enamel paint sprayed over the lacquer paint. As a matter of fact, I repeated the enamel spray several times until I satisfied the results.

A lot of walk-around photos of EC-121s taken at several aviation museums in the US were shown on the walk-around section of this website.....(click HERE) . These walk-around photos helped me a lot in building my "Paisano Dos". Before closing this page, I'd like to say "Thank you very much for your visit to my "Paisano Dos" page. I do hope you enjoyed it". I like this good looking Super Constellation so very much.

Ooops!!

One month after I completed my "Paisano Dos", I realized that (Ooops!!) I forgot to put static dischargers on the trailing edge of the wing.

At first, I glue "stretch rigging" (which I mentioned above) onto thin(0.14mm) plastic strip by using superglue as shown on the photo at above left. Then, I painted the plastic strip in red as shown on the center photo above. After that, I cut the plastic strip into each piece of the static discharger as shown on the photo at above right.

The above photos show my "Paisano Dos" with static dischargers, and now my project is finally truely completed!! The static dischargers applied on the ailerons and the elevators are placed on the upper side. Those applied on the left rudder and the center fin are placed on the left side, and those applied on the right rudder are placed on the right surface.
