During the end of the 1960's, two "special" Neptune units were based at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. One was the 1st Radio
Research Company of the U.S.Army with "AP-2E" electronic surveillance aircraft. The other one was the Heavy Attack
Squadron 21 (VAH-21) of the U.S.Navy with "AP-2H" gunship. One each of these unique Neptunes are still preserved
and displayed in the US, the US Army Aviation Museum (AP-2E) at Fort Rucker, AL, and Pima Air & Space Museum (AP-2H)
in Tucson, AZ. The followings are my walk around photos of the AP-2E/H taken at these museums. My photography was
focused mainly on the areas which were unique on these "special" Neptunes. Speaking from the modeler's view point,
the followings are noticeable external uniqueness of AP-2E and AP-2H. If you are a challenging modeler to plan to
build an AP-2E or AP-2H model in 1/72 scale to be modified from the Hasegawa's P2V-7 kit, please use the following
walk around photos for your reference. They are all YOURs!
"AP-2E"
A total of (at least) five P2V-5F(P-2E)s were converted to AP-2E electronic surveillance a/c for use in Vietnam by the
US Army. There were two sub-variants of the AP-2E in antenna configuration and 131485(Ft.Rucker a/c), 131526 and 131531
were in the same configuration. The other sub-variant (such as 131496, 131429) had less antennas under the fuselage.
The 1st RR(AVN) had operated a few(?) other Neptunes which looked almost like a normal P2V-5F(P-2E) without any additional
antennas. I do not know if such normal P-2E was also designated as AP-2E or not. Some AP-2Es used to fly to Japan
(Atsugi and Yokota) during 1967-1972 and I photographed one of them(131526) at Yokota in 1970 (please see the photo below).
Noticeable external uniqueness (difference from the P-2E) in appearance of the AP-2E preserved at Ft.Rucker are as follows.
1) The glass observer's nose was replaced by a solid nose cone.
2) The AP-2E had the large belly mounted APS-20 radar removed.
3) The both wingtip tanks were replaced with unique-shaped pods(tanks) with antenna fairing on its front.
4) A total of 5 long whip antennas were installed on upper fuselage.(One on the MAD boom was missing on the Ft.Rucker AP-2)
5) A total of four long blade antennas were added under the fuselage, and some other smaller antennas were also added
under the fuselage and at the tail end of the MAD boom.
"AP-2H"
A total of four SP-2Hs were converted to the AP-2H gunship planes and they carried the Navy's three-tone Grey scheme.
Deployment came in 1968 when the four AP-2Hs were assigned to VAH-21 at Cam Rahn Bay. The AP-2H had a very shrot
service life in Vietnam and all four a/c were returned to the US in 1969. They carried a variety of ordnance/weapons in
Vietnam under the outboard wing pylons and in the bomb bay. Unfortunately, the Pima's AP-2H did not carry any ordnance-
related equipment (wing pylons, Minigun pods, etc.) at all. Noticeable external uniqueness (difference from the SP-2H)
in appearance of the AP-2H were as follows.
1) The large belly mounted APS-20 radar was replaced with the APQ-92 unit with large squarish radome.
2) In place of the MAD boom a twin 20mm cannon-armed tail turret and tail gunner's compartment was installed.
3) A FLIR and LLLTV (Low Light Level TV) sensor was mounted in a large chin fairing under the nose.
4) Side-Looking Airborne Radar was mounted aft of the wing trailing edge on both sides of the fuselage. However, they
had already been removed from the Pima's AP-2H, unfortunately.
5) The Jet engine silencer was installed in Vietnam, but it was removed from the Pima's AP-2H. Only its brakets are still
remained around the engine nozzle.
6) The flame dampener was installed in Vietnam on the recip(main) engine exhausts. But again, they were removed already on
the Pima's a/c. Still, you can find its mounting brackets on the Pima's AP-2H immediately after the exhaust pipes.

This is the only one AP-2E still preserved in the US. This AP-2
had been displayed outdoors for a long time, so the paint colors
had been faded quite a bit. But still, most of the antennas are
retained in good shape, except for the one whip antenna on
on the MAD boom, which was missing already.
本機は米国に保存されている唯一のAP-2Eで、アラバマ州の
Ft.Rucker陸軍基地内の航空博物館に屋外展示されています。
塗装の退色はかなり進んでいますが、本機の特徴である
アンテナ類はほとんど残されています。但し、MADブーム上の
アンテナ１本だけは無くなっているのに気が付きました。
Explanation of the above photo. 上写真のご説明
I took the above photo at Yokota near Tokyo back in 1970. The AP-2E was a rare visitor to Japan at that time, so I was
so lucky. As you can see from the above photo, this a/c (BuNo.131526) had four additional long blade antennas under the
fuselage, so I realized that this 131526 had the same antenna configuration as the AP-2E preserved at Ft.Rucker (#131485).
The 1st RR(AVN)'s "Crazy Cats" emblem is partially visible on the nose of the above photo.
上の写真は小生が1970年頃に横田で写しました。何故かお尻が切れていて下手クソな写真ですが、小生にとっては
貴重な１枚です。この写真を見ると胴体下面に特徴の有る長いブレードアンテナが４本確認出来るので、この機体は以下に細部写真
を掲載するFt.Ruckerの機体(BuNo.131485)と同じアンテナ仕様の機体と考えられます。上の写真ではMADブーム上にもアンテナ
が立っていますが、Ft.Ruckerの機体ではそれが外れて無くなっています。

The Pima's AP-2H was the only one AP-2H still preserved in the US. Since this a/c had been
displayed outdoors under Arizona sunshine for many years, the paint colors had been faded
quite a lot, especially on upper surfaces of the wing (please see the photos below).
But still, this museum a/c is valuable historically.
本機は長年アリゾナ砂漠の強烈な直射日光の下で展示されていた為、機体表面の塗装はかなり
退色が進んでいます。特に主翼の上を覗いてみると、もう元の色がわからなくなる程に退色して
います。それでも現存する唯一のAP-2H（の抜け殻）であり、大変興味深く見回しながら細部写真
を写しました。

1960年代の終わり頃に、特別な改修を受けたP-2ネプチューンを装備した２つの飛行隊がベトナムのカムランベイに
駐留していました。当時の写真を調べると、同じエプロンを隣同士仲良く共用していたようです。一方の飛行隊は
米陸軍1st Radio Research Companyで、P-2E(P2V-5F)から改造された電子監視機AP-2E(当時の隊員はEP-2Eとも
呼んでいたようですが）を装備していました。もう一方の飛行隊は米海軍のVAH-21で、SP-2Hから改造されたAP-2H
ガンシップを装備していました。米国にはこれら特殊機が１機づつ保存・展示されており、小生は細部写真を写す
ために両方の博物館へ足を運びました。当然ながら特殊任務用に改造された特徴の有る機体部分に重点を置いて撮影
してきました。その内ハセガワのP2V-7(1/72)のキットを使って、このAP-2を作ってみたいと思っていましたが、実機
（博物館機ですが)を良く観察してみると、AP-2の模型製作はAP-2EもAP-2Hも結構ハードルが高いと実感しました。

"AP-2E"
少なくとも５機の P2V-5F(P-2E)がAP-2E電子監視機に改造されました。当時の写真を観察すると、AP-2E電子監視機
にはアンテナ配置の異なる２種類のAP-2Eが使われていたようです。小生が1970年に横田で撮影したAP-2E(131526)
の写真をこのページの上に掲載しましたが、これは機体下面に長い特徴的なブレードアンテナを計４本追加装備した
『よりアンテナ本数の多い』タイプに当たります。小生がFt.Ruckerで写したAP-2E(131485)も同じく４本のアンテナ
が確認出来たので、いずれも同じアンテナ配置の改造機と考えられます。当時の写真を調べると、これら４本の内
３本が欠落したタイプのAP-2E（例えば、131496､131429）も見受けられます。但し、いずれのタイプにも機体上面に
計５本の長い棒状のアンテナが同じ位置に立っているようです。これ以上の事は小生にはわかりません。又、米陸軍
の1st Radio Research CompanyはP-2E（対潜型)と同じ外観の機体（例えば131492)も何機か運用していたようです。
以下に、AP-2Eの外観的特徴点を列記致します。
１）機首のガラス部はソリッドノーズに改修された。
２）P-2Eの外観上の特徴であるAPS-20レーダーのレドームは除去されている。
３）翼端タンクは先端にアンテナの付いた細長いもの（後ろ半分はP2V-7と同じ細いタンク）に換装された。
４）胴体上面の長いWhipアンテナが追加された。（内１本は機首、１本はMADブーム上だが、Ft.Rucker機は外されている）
５）胴体下部にもアンテナが追加されたが、中でも特徴的なものは計４本の長いブレードアンテナです（内１本は機首下）。
６）P-2Eとの差異ではありませんが、ハセガワのP2V-7（1/72）から改造する場合は前脚柱やキャノピーもP-2E仕様に改造する必要があります。
"AP-2H"
計４機のSP-2HがAP-2Hガンシップに改造され、海軍VAH-21にて南ベトナムのカムランベイで1968年から運用されました。
しかしわずか１年弱の運用（200ﾐｯｼｮﾝ程度）で本国に戻りました。メコンデルタの水路や道路のみならずカンボジアや
ラオスでも作戦を行ったそうです。プラモデルマニアにとってはその特徴的な機体形状のみならず、模型映えするグレー
系の３色迷彩が施されており、大変魅力的な機種です。しかし、AP-2Hへの改造はプラモデルでも結構ハードルが高いです。
ベトナムで撮影された当時の写真を見ると、主翼(外翼)下の一番内側の専用パイロンにSUU-11A/1Aミニガンポッドを斜め
下向きに装備しており、これもプラモマニアには魅力的です。胴体の爆弾倉には40mmグレネードランチャーも装備された
そうです。SP-2Hとの外観的相違点（改造箇所）を以下に列記します。
１）SP-2Hの外観的特徴である前部胴体下のAPS-20レーダーのレドームは除去され、同じ場所にAPQ-92のアンテナフェアリング
が追加されました。これが四角張ったかなり大きなフェアリングで、AP-2Hの外観上の特徴となっています。
２）機首の下にFLIR及びLLLTV (Low Light Level TV)用の大きな"コブ"が出っ張っています。
３）尾部のMADブームは取り除かれて、Aero11/A連装20mmターレット及び銃手用ｺﾝﾊﾟｰﾄﾒﾝﾄが取り付けられました。
４）側面監視機上レーダー(SLAR)が後部胴体左右に装備されました。しかし現役当時の写真を見るとSLARを外している機体
も見受けられます。また残念ながら、ピマのAP-2HからはSLARが丸々取り外されています。
５）ベトナムでの作戦機にはレシプロ(主)エンジンの排気管後部及び補助ジェットエンジン後部に消炎/消音マフラーが取り
付けられましたが、外した状態の写真（恐らく非作戦時）も見受けられます。ピマの機体からはマフラーが取り外されて
いますが、マフラー取付け用と思われるブラケットは残されています。
６）機首両側(小窓の下)と左右水平尾翼下に比較的小型の出っ張り(アンテナフェアリングだと思います）が追加された。
