Republic RF-84K Thunderflash

The FICON ("FIghter CONveyor" or "Fighter In CONvair" ??) program was conducted by the USAF in the 1950s to test the feasibility of a Convair B-36 Peacemaker bomber carrying a Republic RF-84K Thunderflash parasite fighter in its bomb bay. When the RF-84F Thunderflash tactical reconnaissance fighter began entering service, the FICON role was changed from fighter/attack to reconnaissance. A total of 25 RF-84Fs (s/n. 52-7254/7278) were converted to RF-84Ks. The FICON system saw limited service with Strategic Air Command in 1955-56. The GRB-36D carriers from 99th SRW (Fairchild AFB) operated in conjunction with RF-84K from 91st SRS (Larson AFB). The RF-84K differed from RF-84F in having (1) retractable hookup probe, (2) anhedral tailplanes to better fit inside the GRB-36, (3) Aft lstchs on both sides of the fuselage, and (4) blade antenna on the spine. A total of three RF-84Ks are still preserved and displayed at three museums in the US, "National Museum of the USAF" in Dayton, OH., "Planes of Fame" in Chino, CA., and the "Wings over the Rockies Aviation Museum" in Denver, CO.

RF-84Kは米空軍のFICON（"FIghter CONveyor"、"Fighter In CONvair"と言う説も有ります）プログラムの中で開発されたユニークな寄生飛行機です。これはSACの巨人爆撃機B-36の爆弾倉内部にRF-84を懸架して敵地深く侵入し、上空で吊り下げたRF-84を空中発進させて偵察（護衛戦闘も可）を行うものです。合計25機のF-84F（s/n. 52-7254/7278）がRF-84Kに改造されて、1955～1956年の短い期間91st SRS (Larson AFB)に配備されました。因みに、相方のGRB-36Dは99th SRW (Fairchild AFB)に配備されていました。 RF-84FとRF-84Kの外観上の主な相違点は以下の通りです。（１）機首上面に引き込み式フックの追加、（２）水平尾翼に大きな下反角を付けたこと、（３）吊り下げ具への結合ラッチを胴体中央両側面に取付けたこと、（４）垂直尾翼直前にブレードアンテナ追加, などが外観上の相違点です。合計25機改造されたRF-84Kの内、3機のRF-84Kが現在でも米国の博物館に保存・展示されています。その内の二機について細部写真を撮りましたので、2ページに分けて掲載致します。本機はRF-84Fがベースになっていますので、以下の細部写真はRF-84F（たとえF-84Fでも）のプラモ製作にも色々と参考になると思います。

#1) RF-84K (52-7266)

This RF-84K was displayed in natural metal finish, so you can clearly confirm and study details of panel lines and rivet lines from the photos below. Unfortunately, some external parts were missing from the this aircraft including (1) right main gear cover, (2) clear parts for the navigation light on the spine, (3) camera bay panels, but still the aircraft was preserved in fairly good condition.

本機は無塗装状態で展示されているため、パネルラインやリベットラインの詳細を非常に鮮明に確認することが出来ました。 RF/F-84F/Kのプラモデルにしっかとりパネルラインやリベットを彫り込もうとされる方には大いに参考になると思います。残念ながら若干の表面部品が欠落していますが（例えば、右主脚カバー、カメラベイ・パネル、背部航法灯の透明カバー）、屋内に保管されており保存状態はかなり良好です。

#2) RF-84K (52-7265)

After the 91st SRS was disbanded, this RF-84K "52-7265" was operated by the Michigan Air National Guard as a regular (non-parasite) photo reconnaissance aircraft. This aircraft displayed at the "Planes of Fame" did not have an original hookup probe on the nose, so the probe on this aircraft was a replica. But still better than nothing.

加州チノ空港に隣接した"Planes of Fame"博物館に展示されていたRF-84Kの細部写真を撮影しました。本機は91st SRS（戦略偵察飛行隊）が解散した後も、ミシガン州空軍で通常の写真偵察機として配備されました。そのためかどうかはわかりませんが、本機にはオリジナルの吊り下げ用フックが無く、代わりにフックのレプリカが機首に載せられています。
