Kawasaki P-2J (Turbo-) Neptune

A P2V-7 of JMSDF, serialled 4637, was re-engined with two GE.T64 turboprops as the prototype P2V-7-KAI and renumbered 4701, making its first flight on 21JUL66. The P2V-7-KAI entered production as the P-2J. A total of 82 P-2Js were built by Kawasaki with the serials 4702/4783, and the first one (4702) was delivered in August 1969. The P-2J gradually replaced the P2V-7 in service and the last machine (4783) was delivered on 14MAR79. The JMSDF used to have a total of six ASW patrol squadrons with P-2J together with two training squadrons with P-2J. The last two surviving P-2Js were retired on 22MAY94. The followings are noticeable external differences between P2V-7 and P-2J.

1) The Wright R-3350-32W powerplants were replaced by a pair of license built GE.T-64-IHI-10 turboprop engines turning Hamilton Standard three bladed propellers. Completely redesigned engine nacelles and cowlings were fitted around the T-64 engines.
2) The underwing Westinghouse J-34 jet engines were replaced by Japanese license built IHI-J3 turbojets.
3) The smaller APS-80 search radar and MUCH smaller belly mounted radome were installed.
4) The single wheeled main landing gear was replaced by a much smaller diameter dual wheeled main landing gear.
5) The fin and rudder were slightly enlarged and changed in shape.
6) The forward fuselage was extended by 1.3 meter to expand the cabin space (TACCO seat was thus added)
7) Due to the change of main engine and its nacelle, the inboard flap was completely re-designed.

P-2J (#4782)

photographed on 14JUN12

This is the second last P-2J built by Kawasaki, which was delivered to the JMSDF in March 1979. This #4782 still carries the tail marking of the 7th Kokutai(VP-7), which was the last squadron this 4782 was operated by. My walk-around photography on this P-2J was focused mainly on the areas which were different from the P2V-7.
